What i dont get is how sushi and white rice is nearly identical.
My machine at home also does this. There is a minor difference in height indication but so narrow you can get the water to the top of one line and the bottom if the other line.

Rice vinegar is only added after the rice is cooked. The indication is to what level water should be added to coock it with.

I’ve literally never had an issue not separating laundry. Years of mixed loads never any colours bled, I thought the whole thing was a myth.
Last week I washed a red dress of my wife’s with whites, and all my shirts came out pink like a sitcom. It’s real people.
- SkyezOpen@lemmy.worldEnglish8 days
Yeah I had a great city wok logo shirt that I loved but it was literally the only red thing I owned and I didn’t feel like giving it it’s own wash so it got stored away.
- Jarix@lemmy.worldEnglish8 days
You can use vinegar to set dyes.
Red dye is particularly hard to set unless the Dyer knows and cares to do it

Only half way, they didn’t seem to want to deliver babies like in the very olden times, but making the babies definately happened in character from time to time
- Buddahriffic@lemmy.worldEnglish8 days
I wash on cold (or warm) and stopped separating laundry by colour a while ago and now separate it by purpose. Like a load of my clothes, a load of my daughter’s clothes (that she loads and unloads herself, not raising someone that gets confused when she needs to clean her clothes when she moves out), towels get their own load (with added bleach, colourful ones just fade over time), same with bedsheets (no bleach here though).
If I remember, I’ll do new colourful clothes separately on their first wash with the assumption that most of the dye that is going to come out will come out during the first wash.
- AEsheron@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
I went the other way. Never separated for ages, then I got some nice wool socks for work. I don’t care about colors running, but I do want to minimize wear on my delicate clothes, and need to use more expensive detergent for the wool. So now I do my whites on a more delicate cycle. And I’m suddenly finding my flimsy cheap-ass home socks and boxers that used to disintegrate in no time are lasting waayyyyy longer.
- Buddahriffic@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
Another thing you can do is swap dryer sheets for felted wool balls. I’ve also added tennis balls. Helps dry them faster (I think because the balls create pockets of air for the moisture to get into as they tumble, and the wool seems to play a similar role as the sheets electrically, not sure if the tennis balls do the same or are neutral in that regard).
Apparently dryer sheets are rough on clothes. Though tbh I don’t know whether the increased mechanical damage from the tennis balls are easier on it than the chemical damage from the sheets. And I’ve never had boxers or socks disintegrate from the laundry, mine have failed more from wear and tear from use (with dryer sheet or without). So this might be more of an experiment recommendation than a “this will work better”.
- 0x0@infosec.pubEnglish8 days
Most of your white clothes are more like grey off white now if you’d care about that. I dont.
- im_fine_sandy@nord.pubEnglish8 days
If you wash whites with black & colored items they become grey. perhaps generally unnoticeable but it’s one of those details that makes people look really well put together.
- Tikiporch@lemmy.worldEnglish8 days
They make these sheets you throw in with your mixed color loads, I think called Color Catchers or something?
shalafi@lemmy.worldEnglish
8 daysI always sort mine by white, black, everything else. The whites can be bleached a bit to give 'em pop. The blacks don’t get fuzzies from the colors. After washing I pull the stuff that shouldn’t be dried, like hats, bras and shoes, and pull the stuff that’s spun down to barely damp, hang that stuff.

You can buy them at many, but not all, places.

7 daysI saw quite a few posts about it on hiking/sports subreddits in the olden days, it’s used for removing odour from sports shoes. I even tried it myself - depends on the shoe ofc, but like 30°C and lowest/no spin was completely fine. 8 daysI had to put all my stuff in storage then move across the country recently. I did not bring my cuckoo rice cooker with me, and damn I didn’t realize how spoilled I’ve gotten. The rice I’m cooking in a cheap one just isn’t as good. I think it is over-cooking the rice, but it’s actually hard to dial in
- mrgoosmoos@lemmy.caEnglish8 days
this reminds me of how my friend recently used our entire allotment of coffee grounds to dial in the coffee maker at the place we were staying
ten probably hungover people the morning after a wedding, and this guy used all the grounds to
makeend up with 2/3 of a pot of coffee, then dipped before anyone else but me woke uplove the guy, but that was not what I wanted to enter the kitchen to see
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyzEnglish
8 daysWait, what do you mean “dial in”? I’m unfamiliar with this term in the context of coffee makers. Do they need to be calibrated?
Like, did he make a batch, taste it, say “too weak,” toss it, then make another, taste, “too strong,” toss, and so on until he gets one that’s “just right”?
If so, what an asshole.
Or did he just dump an entire can of grounds in the hopper, brew a 2/3 pot, then dump the resulting motor oil in a travel mug before dipping out?
If so, still, what an ass.
- mrgoosmoos@lemmy.caEnglish8 days
the first is exactly what he did lmao
I brought enough coffee for like half a dozen pots
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyzEnglish
8 daysNot only is that selfish, it’s also kinda stupid.
Like did he really need to pour it out because it didn’t suit him? If anything he could have moved it to a different container so that other people could still have some.
But also it’s like… if you don’t know the right ratio it’s not hard to ask. If there’s a scooper it’s usually like one scoop per two cups of water. Getting the precision down to ± three decimal places isn’t exactly necessary.
But whatever. I digress…

That’s the advantage of high quality rice cookers, they can adapt if you get the ratios wrong. I’ve definitely been too drunk and added an extra 1/4 cup of water, but it does its best and still turns out okay.

And I recognize that Zojirushi pot, so it definitely can make good rice.
socsa@piefed.socialEnglish
8 daysI own a rice cooker. I admit that it makes better rice more consistently. But I still use a pot on the stove most of the time because I can get it done quicker, but at the expense of it sometimes being mushy.
- im_fine_sandy@nord.pubEnglish8 days
It’s like coffee. There are troglodytes out there who will tell you instant is just as good as anything else.
- ShutUpWesley@piefed.zipEnglish7 days
If you put in less water than the rice needs, it will result in a chewier texture, like undercooked pasta. Too much water, and it will cook down too much, become gluey and mushy. Perfectly cooked rice is incredible, and I didn’t realize how good plain rice could be til I was an adult and had it prepared correctly.

Apathy Tree@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish
8 daysI use the bulky setting for sheets, blankets, and towels (probably similar to towel setting) not because it washes differently, it doesn’t, but because it has different thresholds to consider the load balanced during spin, and spins it to different speeds. I want my washer to last, so I use it properly with big heavy stuff.
I also use the sanitary setting when I wash underpants and post-bidet towels, but that’s because it superheats the water. Everything else gets washed on tap cold, regular cycle.

Most of the brown rice you buy in grocery stores today is actually parboiled. Parboiled rice cooks with less water and in about the same amount of time as white rice. If you want real, genuine brown rice, you have to read the directions on the back. If it cooks in less than 30 minutes or 35 minutes, it’s not really brown rice. It’s parboiled. If the ratio of water to rice is less than two to one, then it’s also parboiled.
SatyrSack@quokk.auEnglish
8 daysParboiled brown rice is still “real, genuine brown rice”. It’s just been parboiled. It’s not fake rice somehow.

kazerniel@quokk.auEnglish
7 daysBtw is it just me or parboiled rice tastes much worse than regular rice? Granted I’ve been avoiding it like the plague in the last two decades, but I have some bad memories of how flavourless and weird-textured it was.
(And since I learned the trick of cooking rice in salty, olive-oily water that I wait to boil away/absorb, that’s all I do, the end result tastes amazing compared those sad plastic bags of rice we cooked in my childhood.)
- 8 days
Looks like a neuro fuzzy. That thing will make decent rice even if you try to screw it up. Brown rice does take substantially longer to cook properly - your rice maker is likely figuring that out and picking up the slack.
- BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.todayEnglish8 days

kazerniel@quokk.auEnglish
7 daysThat must have been some very al dente rice. When cooked in a pan brown rice needs more than twice the cooking time than white.
azdle@news.idlestate.orgEnglish
7 daysIt’s probably not as good as it possibly could be, but in a automatic rice cooker the timing isn’t manually set, it just cooks until all the water is absorbed / boiled off. So, cooking brown rice on the white rice setting would still take way longer and probably be fine.
- dermanus@lemmy.caEnglish8 days
Rice cookers use a thermocouple to detect when all the water has been absorbed, not a timer. That’s why it doesn’t really matter that much which setting you use.

Someone correct me, but for rice alone, the cheapest rice cooker will do the job just as well as a Ninja or some shit like that, and may be easier to clean if it has just a lid compared to 5 different parts.

A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.worldEnglish
7 daysmaybe you have a different model.
Mines a pain in the ass to clean because the removable parts arent dishwasher safe (the untreated whatever the fuck metal the two removable pieces are made of oxidizes like crazy if you do put it in there, and then everything it touches turns black until you take steel wool and spend 20 minutes scrubbing off all the oxide… a mistake you only make once), and theres an absolute metric fuckton of crevasses and niches on the base that have to be cleaned with toothpicks and chopsticks wrapped in paper towel.
It does a fantastic job cooking rice. The tedium of cleaning it is just extreme and not something i need in my life.
i dont want more features. I dont a fancy name brand. I dont want any gizmos or gadgets. I just want a rice cooker that makes good rice, and isnt a misery to clean. -
