As a born and raised New Mexican, fuck this absolute piece of garbage, and fuck anyone who has voted or is continuing to vote for the convicted rapist and pedophile party. New Mexico is a culturally rich and diverse state, full of traditions going back hundreds, in some cases thousands, of years.

    • 17 days

      Y’all motherfuckers be… enchanting…

    • There’s dozens of us New Mexicans here! Dozens!

It’s such a stupid idea because even people who voted for him have New Mexican pride and wouldn’t agree with this change, it’s simply stupid

Are there still Americans who don’t know NM is part of the US, or it that long past?

        • No that’s still something you come across, not as often as it used to be. 10-15 years ago I had someone ask if they needed their passport to visit NM, which was funny because they were dead serious. I think since Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul got as popular as it did people figured out NM was a state but I cannot confirm this, it’s just my head canon.

          • 16 days

Thanks! I hadn’t heard such a story for some time so I wondered.

            • As a born and raised New Mexican, who now unfortunately lives in the Midwest. Nah, still happening. Got a roomful within the past two months. I blame Missouri public education.

    • My wife and I love NM. We’re from shithole TX and if there isn’t a blue wave here, we would love to move.

      • 16 days

Hey neighbor’s neighbor! We’re in AZ, I’ve been looking fondly over at NM for a bit.
Love visiting NM, except the mountain pass we have to go through to get there. Absolutely hate that part or we might get over more.

We moved here from a cold state many many moons ago and Phoenix had a lot to offer for jobs. Feel like we shoulda looked harder back then. To poor now to make another move but, we will if we gotta.

The french are protesting against education funding. And americans wont get off the couch to rescue their own country.

        • Mobs are easier to form when your entire country is the size of a single US state and everyone who wants to participate in the country is within a day of driving to the same location. Your people aren’t less willing to be fucked over by the government. It’s just easier for the small percentage of you who will riot to meet up.

          • 17 days

And most countries don’t have a police force more heavily armed than a small country’s military.

            • Decades of no accountability and poor hiring practices have made the police thugs against their citizen peers. Funded by the have nots, while protecting the haves and themselves.

        • Eh. Honestly, I think it’s pretty likely both incidents in which someone got “close” were probably false-flags. Orangeboi is a complete coward. I genuinely think he’d piss his pants and run away screaming if it was a real attempt on his life. There are a number of very suspicious points to the rally event in particular.

          • 17 days

So this coward you speak of agreed to allow a teenager to fire a rifle at him from 350’? And Joe Biden’s USSS, who he had purged of MAGA agents, and Joe Biden’s FBI (who agreed Trump was dinged by a rifle round or fragment) were in on it?

Watch him when they pull him up seconds after we hear the “all clear”. He is fucking stunned. Couple of photographers angle in for a shot (lemmy tells they were in on it as well), Trump sees the first thing he understands, “Cameras on ME!”, and does the fist pump.

And all those USSS agents who were demoted or fired, and both shooters, all agreed to upend their careers and lives for…?

Or we could just admit that a couple of dudes shot their shot at the most reviled man in America, possibly and all-time hatred in American politics.

          • Yeah, i am extremely suspicious that the two incidents where people got the closest were completely fabricated false flags. The rally one in particular was so, so sketchy, and so many details simply do not make sense at all.

    • 17 days

That’s irrelevant. Why is he still president should be the question.

        • If he dies in office, Just Defiled a couch Vance and Peter Fucking Thiel take over.

          • Do not let perfection be the enemy of good.

Vance does not have any of the charisma nor the following that Trump has. His ability to coalesce a ruling party is low. It’s why Trump is still in power.

            • 17 days

The bigger issue as I see it is that Trump wants to rule by charisma first. I don’t think Vance particularly gives a shit if people curse his name - meaning that, at the first sign of things getting out of hand, I think he’s more willing to hit the “start killing protestors until the streets are red” button.

            • 17 days

Yep! Add in that what’s left of MAGA will viciously turn on Vance for all the things they could bring themselves to pin on Trump. Vance’ll be a copegoat.

          • With no charisma or leverage to get anything extreme done. It isn’t their daughter in law that controls the GOP and is able to fund primary challengers.

            • You think they’d impeach the younger smarter asshole who wants to hurt their enemies?

No fucking way. The Republicans want this. Trump is only useful for his distraction otherwise they would have stopped musk.

Plus it gives them an incumbent to run in 2028 (if they aren’t already planning to run Trumps corpse again).

              • 17 days

They’d be morons to run Vance in 2028. As sitting VP he can’t fill a high school auditorium.

                • 16 days

They’d be morons to run Vance in 2028

Only if the US still has legitimate elections. Guess we’ll see during the midterms.

              • I didn’t say anything about impeachment. What would matter if they did anyway? A presidential impeachment has never ended in consequences. No, they just want have the ability to jam through controversial bills or wars. Congress won’t just go along with them.

    • The ultraconservative cabal behind his back who wants their schemes signed and greenlit. They have to keep their puppet alive.

      • most presidents are affected by stress because they’re actually doing the fucking job, not just alternating pep rallies and golf

    • kept alive by the ghost of epstein, and MCDONALds nitrates, and fatansizing about his daughters.

    • 17 days

He only has room in his head for like 10 words at a time. That’s why he thinks remembering 5 in cognitive tests is a huge victory. It takes half his brain! And the other half is “America” “golf” “China” and “besty Putin.”

    • 17 days

At some point he was told patriotism or some like thing polls well and his dementia addled brain locked onto it. On some level he understands he’s dying, wants to leave his mark and can’t get away with naming everything Trump as he’s done his whole life, so “America” it is.

      • Or he’s just trying to preoccupy people with random stupid shit to distract from things that actually matter…

Anyway, where them epstein files at tho?

    • Well to be honest he probably wants to name after Himself but even his most loyalists followers refuse to do that. They probably told him that when he wins they will do just that. I mean he did complained that he had to build all these moments after himself because noone will do it after he dies.

  • Comically, New Mexico acquired its name long before “New Spain” became Mexico. Apparently New Mexico predates Mexico. (By a decent while too).

Edit ended up reading the article, it is listed in the article further down as well “New Mexico’s name predates the founding of the United States back to the 16th century”

    • Apparently New Mexico predates Mexico. (By a decent while too).

      …

New Mexico predates the modern country of Mexico, yes.

But when Spanish Conquistadors first reached the Valle de Mexico, in the 1520s, it was the most densely populated urban area on the planet at over a million people.

That’s why New Mexico includes “new”, because it wasn’t the original.

    • 17 days

Mexico made a power move naming itself, knowing New Mexico already existed. “They might be ‘new’ but we’re the og.”

  • 17 days

There are no adults coming to save us. It won’t even be that surprising if this ends up happening. Certainly not becausw it makes a shred of sense, just because this timeline is satire.

      • It was named well before Mexico was a country, actually. But it was named after the Aztec’s Valley of Mexico. First there was the valley, then their was the Spanish owned lands north of the Rio Grande, then came the nation, then came the state but maintaining the old Spanish name (translated to English).

  • 17 days

I legitimately saw this news floating around earlier and just assumed it was a parody article…

  • Calling it already, all Spanish names of towns and states will be forcefully translated to English. Prepare for Snowy, Tiles, Flowery, Aridzone and Caliphornia to be really peeved about this

    • What about Michigan? I grew up in Detroit. I loved visiting Mackinac Island and Kalamazoo, places whose names carry traces of the Indigenous languages and cultures that existed here long before European settlement. Kalamazoo is often translated as “boiling water,” although its precise meaning is uncertain, while Mackinac is traditionally associated with “great turtle.”

Then you have Ypsilanti, named after a Greek military commander who fought in the Greek War of Independence, and Detroit, whose name comes from the French word détroit, meaning “strait” or “narrow passage.”

And that’s just one state in the Midwest.

Does this guy understand that America is not simply a country of wealthy white people? This country has always been a complicated mixture of Indigenous nations, European colonial powers, immigrants, and countless cultures that helped shape what we now call America.

The French established settlements throughout North America, including Detroit and New Orleans. Spanish-speaking communities existed in what is now the United States long before the country even became independent. Indigenous peoples had their own languages, cultures, governments, and civilizations for thousands of years before European colonization. And those influences haven’t simply disappeared. They’re embedded in our geography, our language, our food, our music, and our institutions.

And here’s an important correction to a common misconception: until March 2025, the United States had no federally designated official language. English has now been designated the official language by executive order, but that doesn’t erase the country’s multilingual history or the many languages spoken here today.

America’s history is far more complicated than a simplistic narrative about one ethnic or cultural group. You can see that history just by looking at a map of Michigan.

Honestly, I can’t tell whether this guy fundamentally misunderstands the country he’s governing or whether he’s employing a political strategy so calculated that I’m struggling to comprehend it. Is this genuine ignorance, deliberate messaging, or some combination of the two?

Because I find it difficult to understand how anyone can look at the actual history of this country and conclude that America’s identity belongs exclusively to one group of people.

    • He’ll say he likes the music of Henry Churches and King’s Wool as well as being a fan of movies featuring Tony Flags
