It doesn’t even taste good.

If you contact them about this, they may send you many Fruit by the Foot rolls.

“Metal detector calibration device can be exchanged for many Fruit by the Foot…”

EDIT: NVM they called me back.
I contacted the 1800 number, they took my name and number and box code and everything, gave me a case number, said they were transferring me, and then an automated voice was like “thank you for calling, please rate our service, goodbye” and hung up on me.
All I’ve learned is to avoid buying any General Mills products for the foreseeable future.

They shipping you some freebies? Lol
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish7 days
General Mills is overpriced anways. Aldi is best, usually, granola excepted. Idk about candy I don’t touch it.

This unironically sounds like an imperial system measurement. “It was 10,000 fruitfeet of contamination.”
- Glowstick@lemmy.worldEnglish8 days
I doubt this implies that any are contaminated. The metal disk will certainly be a device that’s safe for contact with food.
- 8 days
The problem is that it got through, so the metal detector isn’t working, and nobody noticed.
- 8 days
Lol. One of my first jobs was working a canning plant. QC procedure for the metal detector was to rerun the test can until it kicked it out properly and then mark it as “functional”.
I once got an assembly machine bumper in my bag of sun chips. The prizes are… unorthodox to say the least.

John, the technitian, has dropped so many of those at this point he just carries a bag of them.
I actually laughed out loud at this. I imagined it more as John has been blowing the whistle about the faulty metal detector for a long time now. He’s filled out forms, sent emails, notified his supervisor, etc. Months of frustration go by. He finally just buys a bag of these and randomly chucks one in when no one’s looking so it’ll eventually make it to a consumer, effecting real change.

And they took a photo of it, had a laugh, and nothing changed.
Now john uses arsenic.

8 daysI think we can probably conclude their industrial metal detector is not properly calibrated
- ShutUpWesley@piefed.zipEnglish8 days
I’ve worked in food production, I remember a metal test stick going missing, and having to recall&rework 8 full pallets of product to find it.
- 8 days
Just an employee who cares more I’m sure. Idk the absolute gigantic scale of the plants that make these food products is insane. It’s actually impressive there aren’t more issues.
But like if you were on the factory floor and you were worried about losing your job and some random thing happened that ultimately probably won’t kill anyone would you flag someone down or just let it go?
I’d like to think I’d grab somebody if I noticed it. I’d say it’s likely just something happened and it wasn’t noticed.
- ShutUpWesley@piefed.zipEnglish7 days
You’d be amazed, at industrial scale how fine grain quality controls can be. With modern QC technology there is very little excuse for cockups in food safety.
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish7 days
Food processing around my area has metal detectors.
One asshole threw some screws in the food to get a break, twice. He got caught the second time, charged, I forget, a year in jail or something.
- ShutUpWesley@piefed.zipEnglish7 days
Metal detectors are standard practice in food production, it’s part of HACCP, which basically every food manufacturer implements, I think it’s a requirement of SQF certification as well.

Last time I tried a fruit by the foot it was skinnier thinner and worse tasting than I remembered them being just a few years earlier. They came in a multi pack with gushers and rollups. The gushers where by far the most disappointing nostalgically, they didn’t even have a shape really and most had leaked.
- 8 days
Gushers have also failed my recent nostalgia test. Most come melted together.
Sadly that lives up to my nostalgia but I did remember them tasting better. Dunkaroos were a huge disappointment, the frosting doesn’t taste nearly as good as it did to 10 year old me. Not sure if the formula changed or if my taste buds did
- 8 days
I was a dm of dollar tree. They don’t give a fuck if things get melted. During the hottest three months some candy does come in with frozen.
What really concerns me is the medicine. A lot of that stuff says to keep it room temperature. Those trucks are not room temperature and the medicine never comes in with frozen. Straight off the hot ass truck.

7 daysVaguely reminds me: I worked for 7-11 forna few years. One year during summer, the stores AC failed. We had to move all the chocolate into the drinks cooler because it was becoming bags of liquid chocolate…
They still kept and sold it all though.
I’m convinced snack companies are shrinking their products, ala shrinkflation, at a slow enough rate to make you second guess if they just looked bigger when you were smaller.

It’s not just your imagination I and others don’t think, they’ve cheaped out on everything presumably. I used to like subway, I went there a couple years back and it was so salty I could barely eat it, and more downgrade than before I think. Others agreed with me on this, and other food products being worse quality.
- Soggy@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
Subway is, as far as I know, almost entirely a franchised operation so it varies substantially by region and between individual stores. My town definitely has a “good Subway” and a “bad Subway” (and actually it’s been a year or two since I’ve been, the good one might suck now).

Right now they appear to be A/B testing natural colors vs old school Allura Red & Tartrazine. The boxes look almost identical, but IMO the natural colored ones taste better. I keep accidentally buying the artificially colored ones.
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish7 days
I once got ramen noodles with that gross cinnamon sugar stuff they put in like those instant oatmeal packets and such loaded in them. Weird. I don’t return food I just threw it out.
This is something else. There is a probably pretty dull story to this, I wish we knew.
- 7 days
Stuff like that absolutely needs to be reported. People have allergies or diabetes and xould die not knowing what they’re eating (i know youd expect a reasonable person to know the difference, but there are a lot of unreasonable people and those with disabilities)
