22 hoursWe are decentralized, according to FediDB, the Fediverse has 14.2 million accounts. Lemmy+Piefed+Mbin have 551k users. Obviously we could be better spread out, but the fact that there’s no instance at 50% share is already pretty nice.
And if a big instance enshittified, it would be drastically easier for everyone to leave it compared to convincing people to leave Reddit or something. You just export/import your user settings and you get to keep the communities you’ve subscribed to and block, and the users you’ve blocked.
No. The idea is to have the constant looming threat of decentralization to keep the centralized system in check.
- Goodeye8@piefed.socialEnglish19 hours
Except in this there’s really not a lot of benefit when it comes to centralization so it would be better to decentralize to make sure no single instance becomes too big. I’d say world is already a bit too big because 90% of my subscribed feeds would be gone if world no longer federated with Piefed. World has significant sway on our side of the fediverse because smaller instances will probably feel dead (or turn into an echo chamber) if world won’t federate with them.
I came here after lemmy.ml said it was shutting down. Idk what happened a with that but world seemed stable enough to not have that problem
.ml shutting down? That’s the devs server unlikely it will shut down unless for maintenence
the instance I was on straight up, said that it was shutting down, and that we should migrate to other instances. I did that and dropped the other account so I have no fucking clue what’s going on over there.
actual question: How is Lemmy.ml functionally different than Lemmy.world?
cannedtuna@lemmy.worldEnglish
1 day.ml has a lot of pro-Russia, pro-China types and criticism of either country can lead to a quick ban.
Functionally, there is no difference. Both run the same software, tho the versions may slightly differ as the devs, who run .ml, push updates.
For a functionally different experience try Mbin/Kbin (I forget which is the current), or Piefed. Piefed is similar to Lemmy with some quality of life improvements. Kbin/Mbin is a cross between “tweet” style posts, “blog” style posts like tumblr, and Reddit type posts.
- 18 hours
Ok, I get it that there are pro-China guys, plenty of Russian regime fans around as well. But the thing that really caught me by surprise is that there are seriously people entirely serious about how North Korea is heaven earth.
Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.orgEnglish
1 dayFrom my experience, people in .world are way more open to positive discussion than .ml. Everything upsets .ml if you say the wrong thing or dont post the right way, to make them understand. Its to much fucking drama for no reason.
- 16 hours
.world is doing its best to replicate every bad thing about reddit (starting with powermods) while avoiding every positive aspect it might have once had. I’m sure its admins have constant wet dreams about the day they can go public and sell it for parts.
.ml is trying to pretend it’s not lemmygrad by putting on glasses with a fake nose and a moustache.
Both are toxic and harmful to the fediverse.
Similar things can be said of most other “big” instances to a lesser extent (including the one I’m in, but I’m too lazy to move out for a third time).
Frankly, the only instance I’d trust to not be politically compromised is fedinsfw, and I already got bit once by lemmynsfw’s incompetent management (when they lost control of it to a rogue admin and it closed for months), so I’m not going back there.
Next time I have to move I’ll be rolling my own private instance, or quitting altogether.

22 hoursML was run by the Lemmy frontend maintainers who drain the blood of puppies for sustenance and wish to kill you slowly and painfully as a source of income.
- 24 hours
Precisely! What’s the point of an overpopulated instance? It’s more likely to affect users because of blanket instance blocklists.
All those users are from different instances. That’s decentralized.
If this community goes down or is otherwise not viable anymore, users can easily find another, similar community, while not having to switch to a different platform or instance or whatever themselves. That’s how this is supposed to work.
Decentralization with different larger communities on different instances, with community members from all kinds of different instances, baby!
It only works if you can bring your block list with you. That’s the only thing of value attached to my profile.
You can, it’s easy and quick. I just exported my profile settings (builtin to the default lemmy.world web UI) to a json file in a couple seconds. Confirmed it contains blocked users and communities.
I’m part of discuss.tchncs.de, more or less by accident. I just stumbled across that one when I wanted to make an account.
- ShutUpWesley@piefed.zipEnglish1 day
For real, do they want the Fediverse to turn into a shitshow like email?
- 1 day
Decentralized networks with large centralized communities is the best approach. You have to have that number of people to have interesting conversations and engagement.
But if all the users are spread out across several instances it becomes more resilient. If a large community/instance goes offline or there’s a controversy then it can be migrated to a new instance

1 dayIt’s good to have it as an option but most people are frustrated if they can’t just go to one place that has tons of people.

Have any good suggestions for a decent non-tankie instance that doesn’t censor and allows downvoting? I’m only on .world out of laziness.
- 15 hours
Dbzer0, which is focused on piracy and for autism/ADHD spectrum, pro lgbtq and pro trans. It is blocked by .world.
- 16 hours
Anything about piracy is blocked, as well as other content. I’m all for moderation, but I’m against censorship.

19 hourstankie who’s upset that .ml users can’t spread pro north korea shit
- 15 hours
Wtf man. Fuck North Korea, and any other propaganda. I’m worried about censoring piracy related content mostly. I don’t even know .ml, I’m from .db0.
Speaking about propaganda and fake news, you’re the one jumping to wrong conclusions and thus spread misinformation. You didn’t even bother to check which instance I’m from. You’re such a massive hypocrite.
- 19 hours
.World mods will ban you for debunking disproven pro West propaganda.

I wonder if the Jehovah’s witnesses are excited like this when they get a good number of members. /s

Doesn’t all of lemmy only have 60k weekly users though? I thought I just read that.
- 15 hours
It will grow exponentially, though, Reddi’s latest update removed the r/all sub and its pissed off a heck of a lot of users.
Imo it doesn’t even deserve to have consumers anymore, it’s basically a Facebook newsfeed now, merely without a friends list.
- 15 hours
I’m here because they restricted old.reddit to only logged in users for “security reasons.” The only time I log in is when I’m truly motivated to post something. Forcing me into their obnoxiously large, ad filled hamster wheel of scrolling when I just want to browse efficiently was the last straw.
- 15 hours
It will grow exponentially
It made a huge jump in 2023 and is mostly declining since then. Unfortunately fediverse observer shut down.

1 dayI can now say I’ve officially joined the .world party, after the craziness from my last post getting deleted, im officially done with them. i might even delete all my other post i did in .ml, those guys are fucking ridiculous for no reason.

1 dayEven so, my interactions there are way better than .ml. ill take that anyday
I convinced a few of my friends to leave reddit and move onto to here. I’M DOING MY PART!

Let’s go Lemmy! It’s nice to see this platform grow. Whether by taking in people from corpo social media platforms or just by people discovering that it’s actually a safe neat little place to exist.
Keep the Lemmings coming please 💜- 16 hours
I decided to drop Reddit recently, it’s an ugly husk of what it once was.
I typed into Google “Reddit alternatives” and funnily enough, it was from a Reddit post that I learned about Sumit and Lemmy.World.
- 15 hours
Lemmy.world is very search engine friendly. If you add lemmy to your search, it will usually surface lemmy world
I’m a recent convert. Got banned by Reddit mods, like globally for an anti ICE comment. I called them brownshirts.
- 19 hours
A lot of people have been banned for similar reasons around the DOGE crackdown. The smallest comment would trigger a ban for “inciting violence.”
FiniteBanjo@feddit.onlineEnglish
22 hoursLemmy kind of maintained by really really really terrible people, though. Better off on a different fediverse frontend.
- 18 hours
I think that’s a personal preference. From what I’ve heard, the devs used to be tankies (fuck those), other devs distanced themselves (I think?), tankies made Lemmy.ml (you can tell by the amount of bullshit on there, lol), some instances defederated from it (good) and now…I think we just go on? Idk, I’m probably completely wrong about that, please correct me. Anyway, fuck tankies.
I really like Lemmy. I probably won’t leave. Sure, Mastodon works ig, but I’m not a Twitter person. I much prefer the Reddit-style…style of Lemmy. So, forgive me for this, but I’m staying.
- 18 hours
I see, I was wrong. Checking the Lemmy repository, it seems that nutomic and dessalines still work on it. And yeah, these are hardcore tankies that I strongly disagree with.
With that said, these people run lemmy.ml. I’m not on lemmy.ml. I really don’t think they can influence me in any way, cause of how Lemmy works. The first thing I do when signing up is block Yogthos, lemmy.ml, all communism communities and the lemmy.ml instance. So…don’t judge me for this, but I’m staying, even tho I disagree with the devs. I mean fuck, Elon Musk being human trash doesn’t stop people from using Twitter and I bet way more people use Twitter than there are Lemmy users.
I slept 5 hours last night and I’m dead (suffering from relationship success) :P
If anything that I type doesn’t make sense, please correct me!

High scores are neat; but we all realize that’s effectively just trainspotting, right? Popularity just means popularity, and laundering that out to some notion of good/effective/accurate/respected is neither good nor healthy ; right?
Still, grats on having a higher number.

Nah.
If you view corporate social media like fb/twitter/reddit as a morally wrong + negative influence on society, then this is a moral win thus worth celebrating.
Especially when you add in that the main barrier to any social media product gaining traction is first hitting that critical mass of enough posts to make it worth returning to -> habit forming + habit replacing.
Can someone connected with Anonymous see if they can get some AI to do a Hugging Bear style DDoS attack on u/Spez? We should Ol’ Yeller Reddit. It’s for the best really.
