The weird thing about this is for me it started working just fine with both micro block and noscript. Sometimes there’s a delay but otherwise no ads

4 daysIf you’re not using Firefox or a fork of FF with uBlock Origin and still complaining about ads: What’s wrong with you?
- Zer0_F0x@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
PSA (I honestly don’t know anyone else who does this) the Android version of Firefox supports the uBlock origin extension (among other things) and plays YouTube videos perfectly fine.
I haven’t had to watch a single ad on YouTube on my phone for years and well over a decade on any PC or Mac.
- asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
There’s also LibreTube and Grayjay, which don’t show ads at all anyway, and also come with a skip button that turns on for in-video sponsor ads / asking you to like and subscribe.
- kernelle@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish4 days
+1 for Grayjay, not the most user friendly out there, but once you get it setup it’s really good!
- Shartyfartblast@piefed.zipEnglish4 days
Orion browser on iOS also supports uBlock origin, for those in that ecosystem
- Strider@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
I’m using Firefox with ublock on android and also Firefox klar (as default for links) but for YouTube I use newpipe. No ads but occasional blocking but I really don’t care.

I mean it’s not only ads but the other lists against popups and other annoying stuff too.
- 8uurg@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
Assuming Android, for me the following worked:
- Go to app info.
- Open ‘Set as default’.
- Turn “Open supported links” off.
Though I’d wager that the above may be variant dependent.
- Sawblade02@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish4 days
Ahh thanks, that was driving me mad opening links and somehow defaulting to the unremovable app instead of FF.
- original_charles@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
Do you have the ability to Force Stop and Disable it in your app settings?
You should be to copy paste any youtube link into your Firefox browser.
- Karjalan@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
I haven’t checked if there’s a way to automate the links opening in FF instead of YouTube app but I’ve been copy pasting into FF personally
- Denjin@feddit.ukEnglish4 days
Get an OS that doesn’t fill your phone with unremovable bloat ware. You can also turn off opening links in apps in the Firefox settings, or install NewPipe and make that the default app for YouTube links.
Hanrahan@slrpnk.netEnglish
4 daysor install NewPipe and make that the default app for YouTube links.
tat seems to have been stopped ? all of a sudden it opening links in the YT app, and bypassing Newpipe, started about 2 weeks ago. I was shocked by the ads. How to change it back ?
- 4 days
Android has a full app replacement. It’s called ReVanced. Use version 20.31.42 rather than the latest, though. The latest has been partially broken by YouTube and freezes often.
- Zer0_F0x@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
I just use YouTube for watching videos on my phone every now and then. Works perfectly in Firefox with ublock for that, no need to install anything additional

4 daysI do use Firefox (laptop) and NewPipe (phone), but my PS5 is the main device I use for streaming when I want to watch stuff with my girlfriend. No way to block ads on PS5, so I’m telling myself that I do it for the streamers (they gotta eat, too).
- Soggy@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
Even if that were true, and it’s not, there’s a ton of streamers that aren’t vtubers.
- Soggy@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
No. Vtubers use a digital puppet rather than their own face/image, often for physical appeal but also privacy or just as a gimmick to stand out. It’s a specific thing.

- Rusty@lemmy.caEnglish4 days
I have a Roku tv and I’m using PlayLet app for YouTube. It blocks ads and seems to be integrated with SponsorBlock. I don’t see any ads, but I haven’t tested the SponsorBlock, the videos I watch don’t have sponsored segments.
- ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish4 days
Because you insist on using Chrome and can’t install Ublock Origin and Sponsorblock.
The self-flagellation continues.

4 daysDon’t need sponsorblock I think, or maybe I’m just not watching videos where it’s needed. Just ublock origin.
- ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish4 days
Sponsorblock definitely helps on the in-video ad reads if they’re excessive or irrelevant. Ublock won’t get those.
- HeyJoe@lemmy.worldEnglish3 days
I recently found sponsorblock through another youtube bitching post months ago and found it was just as amazing as ad blocking. Sometimes it doesnt get them all, but it hits most and saves minutes sometimes off of watching. I absolutely think its a must have now.

This. Firefox w/ Ublock Origin + SponsorBlock + DeArrow + Enhancer for YouTube on desktop, YouTube Morphe on Android, SmartTubeNext for the TV. I never have to watch a YT ad ever.
- entwine@programming.devEnglish3 days
Or better yet, use Grayjay. That’ll block the ads, and prevent Google from spying on you.
- Psythik@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
Never heard of it; I’ll check it out, thanks.
(Is it like PiHole? Not a fan of that because it does a bad job at blocking anti-adblocking measures, while everything else I mentioned defeats them every time, especially UBO.)
- entwine@programming.devEnglish2 days
No, it’s just an app that serves as an alternative youtube frontend.
- capital5@discuss.tchncs.deEnglish4 days
Just be grateful that you don’t have to pay for the privilege of watching ads… yet.
Cable TV, I’m looking at you!
- AVincentInSpace@pawb.socialEnglish2 days
Fun fact: if you pay for Amazon Prime Video, most of their catalogue is actually on Freevee (which they own so you can access it through the same TV app) and you get shown an ad every fifteen minutes anyway. And even on the shows that are actually on Prime and don’t have midrolls, if you pause the TV show you will see a fullscreen ad instead of a freeze frame until you hit play again (except that there is a handy prompt informing you that if you press OK instead of unpausing you will be taken to a page where you can order the product shown directly from your TV)
- TheRealKuni@piefed.socialEnglish4 days
Skippable promos for other shows, yes. But importantly, you won’t see ads for like, toilet paper or food or whatever, on the paid tiers (unless someone has a stupid like, “pay less for fewer ads” thing).
- [deleted]@piefed.worldEnglish4 days
Having a loud beginning to the promos for other shows is just as annoying as loud ads for anything else. That fucking Stewart Saves the Universe or what the fuck it is called on HBO playing before everything I watched for weeks made me stop trying to watch anything until it switched to some other show.

You kinda have to be a psychopath to take a Laptop to the kitchen, unless you place it super far away from everything and always wash your hands before typing that keyboard will get super nasty. The kitchen is Tablet territory because you can just wipe it clean after.

I don’t own a tablet and don’t see a reason to buy one for this non-issue.
Obviously you place it where it doesn’t get dirty, and you start a video that is long enough before starting to cook, so you don’t have to touch it until you’re done.
