Problem is that currently, it is a tool that exhibits the worst parts of capitalism. It takes jobs, destroys the environment, makes everything more soulless and unpleasant, is used for the military, is trained on stolen works, and much more…
In a post-capitalism world, maybe it could be great, but currently it is one of the worse symptoms of capitalism. It needs to be stopped until we can make good use of it without harming people, which will never happen while we are still in a capitalist system

I’m not demoralized by the problems the world faces. I’m demoralized by people’s active efforts against solving them, or encouraging making them worse. Racism above economic benefits for all. More expensive gas vehicles over the multitude of transport options that don’t pollute our environment.
In history books, I read stories about how the world had to band together to win WW2; for instance, stories about sharing used nylons to make parachutes, or how the modern post office was reinvented. As horrible as war was, I miss when people would actually try. It disgusts me that a great many people just know that you-know-who lies on the regular and still support him.
I don’t even hate him so strongly. I hate what he showed of our world as a litmus test, and it’s made it hard to trust that world again.

We’re only narrowly reaching a “70% dislike” and some 20% of that doesn’t care about how he uniltaterally, illogically slaughtered innocent people across half the world - they’re just looking at the price on their gas pump. The moment any empathetic, reasonable person fails to secure an oil pipeline, or, god forbid, encourages electric vehicle alternatives, they’ll rage about taxes and oil again.
2020 should’ve told me people could change. 2024 showed they didn’t.

Almost every issue I have right now goes back to billionaires, fascism, or capitalism. The last two years have been the most difficult of my life so far, and literally existential. I just nearly avoided statelessness and now I can’t legally work following a layoff, so I’ve been living off of savings

There are a few handfuls of expansionist narcissistic oligarchs, dictators and uber rich that ruin the experience for everyone else.
Seriously, we hang a few dozen very specific guys from the gallows and literally the world would be saved the next day. All of the sudden genocides are over, we can focus fully on stopping climate change, we can form a UN that can enforce peace, we can implement wealth caps where nobody gets crazy rich anymore… Can you imagine?
Seriously… That is the weirdness of the problem. We have a few people with so much power that 8 billion of us have their lives ruined by at most a few hundred
I would change John Lenno’s “imagine” to “imagine we hang the parasite class and implemented wealth caps, it isn’t hard to do”
Would you go regional for example each country has to pick 10 specific arseholes, or would you pick a number and pick 200 or so despite location?
And do you think there is a ranking system say politician, warmonger, Tech-bro, media owner, CEO and so on?
I think this is an actual use for AI, to analyse these scenarios and figure removing which figure benefits humanity the quickest.

Okay, so, billionaires all die, totally intestate, tomorrow. Believe it or not, you’re going to have about the same week you otherwise would have, and, if you put aside the implications of something magical happening, some reduction to global government debts will be the main long-term divergence in the West.

Your prerogative. But trust me this week, next week, any week if they started dying/disappearing, feeling immoral and threatened enough to make the world a better place it would make me happier. The actual scenario was that they’re all dead at once. Like, sure, maybe you’ll be glad about that. It’s not going to be a drip feed of billionare liveleak videos to brighten your days, though; you still have real life to deal with.
You can’t really clutch pearls about just being questioned, in this context. You want someone dead - no, you think it will make you truly happy in general - you better be able to justify it.
There is no context. It can be a big question or a little one. I get pissed off and unhappy at the state of the world and billionaire arseholes are contributing a lot to the fact.

Billionaires are intricately and dominantly involved with late-stage capitalism, which is making all our lives worse in countless ways. If they did indeed disappear and weren’t quickly replaced, then at least there’s a chance better legislation and regulatory structures could be firmed up to slow future billionaires down.

Some combination of decades of trauma, a system designed to marginalize and exploit, a lack of community, genetics.
Because 46 and lost remote job, and after working a year from home dread having to go into work. Especially with gas what it is and I live in shit hole state with no public transportation. Add to the fact that I must try find work in this economy while dealing with ageism. Just fucking hate this shit.
Keep fighting. I got laid off twice in the past two years and managed to find new gigs each time. I’m about the same age. Programmer.
I worked in a remote job 2021-2025, large organization, layoffs (or “impacts” is the newspeak word I guess) in Feb. Job hunting was a real rollercoaster, but I found a local company that sounded promising.
It seemed fine at first, in-office but a short commute that I didn’t mind. But…laid off again in early March. Another year, another job hunt. Even more of a rollercoaster. But I did manage to get another remote gig working as an independent contractor for another large organization.
It’s not ideal, but it is possible. You’ve got skills and experience. There are still jobs out there that need doing even if you have to wade through more bullshit to get there.
I’m programmer all I got is Property and Casualty license and 26 plus years of customer service experience. Which is in short supply now due to AI.
and also your friends family nagigng on you for not having a job, or “clutching thier pearls” have to move back in with family.
