I don’t know how some people stay on [big social media] while constantly hating being on [big social media].
- 14 days
Most people I talk to pretend like it’s too complex. They’re upset about a single company controlling their social media, but scared about not having that.
I gave up trying once I realized the large majority of humans today dont know what a filepath is.
I’ll retreat to my cave now.
- 14 days
dont know what a filepath is.
I have a friend who teaches a highschool computer elective and lesson 01 is Folders, creating them, what they are, etc.
Thank goodness. But shouldnt that be elementary? I was doing that when I was like…6…and there was no internet.
- 14 days
You’d think. But we are admittedly engaging in some boomer ass thinking right now.
I don’t think so. Tech illiteracy is at an all time high and it affects everyone’s life a drastic amount. This isnt driving manual or writing cursive. Its terrifying how bad people are with tech and it allows for corpos to sow more dissent and misinformation and move us to knowledge as a service with fascism.
- 14 days
I mean knowing what something is and using it can be 2 different things. Most people can save things to their computers or make a folder. They just have no reason to know the technical term or how the computer saves it behind the scenes, if you told them they’d likely remember.
Always hated the if someone doesn’t know a specialized word in your profession or hobby they’re dumb mentality
- 14 days
Seriously. That’s like me thinking someone’s dumb because they don’t understand the function of chloroplasts in a cell or something. Not everyone in the world is into your specialty.
File path is a specialized term? Ctrl+f is specialized ? This has existed for over 25 years. Its scary people dont know absolute basics.
It’d be something else if it wasnt a thing that encompasses every aspect of our lives 24/7 every single day of our lives. Dont you think people should be knowledgeable about it ? Ive always been of the mind I should be educated about important things like that and have been learning my entire life so I know things that matter.
Its also easier than its ever been. This isnt changing a flat tire or some physical thing people are more scared to learn. This is veeeery easy reading and videos to educate yourself on how a staple aspect of your life functions.
- 13 days
While that is true and important to mention, im also getting reports from teachers saying a lot of the kids, even the older ones, also dont even know of the concept of a file. An image is just an image that can be dragged between apps. A folder is for apps. Everythings an app!
Been some time since i was substitute, so maybe the claims are a bit exaggerated. Could be the commenter was referring to this trend?
it is significantly harder to find the “right” instance if you want to actually see varied content and not just leftyslop and tech.
- 14 days
With federation, you shouldn’t need to consider that, browse, and participate with remote instances freely. Unless what you want to see is largely defederated, in which case, you should probably think about why it’s against the social contract of so many instances.
maybe if the majority of instances stopped devaluing genocide by grouping mass slaughter and colonialism with it I wouldn’t notice such a lack of opposition to any anti-capitalist ideology.
- FishFace@piefed.socialEnglish13 days
There is no right instance for that, because the whole fediverse doesnt have that many users, and of those, a great many post that kind of stuff. It’s not my cup of tea either (at least not to such a great degree, without a community for most of my hobbies) but I’m OK enough with it to stay for the shitposts and to hope it grows (but not too much!)
- 13 days
and of those, a great many post that kind of stuff.
No, it’s a few creating dozens posts a day.
- 14 days
I was very frustrated at everyone getting mad at twitter, and then going to bluesky instead of mastodon.
At a certain point, once everyone is there everyone else has to go there.
I will say fedi right now has a pretty good vibe. Some of the more negative/angry people have left and its been a chill little community lately.
- 14 days
At least with bluesky you can bridge to the fediverse and vice versa. So you can keep it comfy on the fediverse
mesa@piefed.socialEnglish
14 daysYeah I do that on my personal gotosocial instance. Works well actually.
I wish there was a really lightweight version of piefed/lemmy that can work on a tiny pi instance like my gotosocial. But this instance is good too.
- FishFace@piefed.socialEnglish13 days
Surely that’s just not possible due to how much an instance potentially needs to do with everything you subscribe to?
UiUiUiUiUi@piefed.nlEnglish
13 daysPick one:
- Complicated to selfhost so the mayority uses the main server
- Simple to selfhost, hosted by many in their cabinet, total win; copyparty, syncthing, navidrome, immich, gotosocial, haven, radicale, gancio
- 13 days
The truth is, it’s the most balanced people who left. Most people who remain are deep in the echo chamber, which is why it seems more chill: everyone agrees with you and the ones with realistic opinions have left.
- 13 days
Would you describe yourself as a balanced person? Have you made many postive comments on here to balance out all of your negative ones?
- 13 days
Balanced compared to most lemmy users, yes, though perhaps less than the average person. If you feel balanced on lemmy, then you are very much an extremist.
My comments seem negative because I only comment on controversial topics, and since I don’t parrot the common opinion around here, it gives them a negative tone. I never bother with the “I agree” comments like everyone loves so much, even when I do agree, because they do not incite discussion.
- 13 days
Maybe different for different people, but I don’t mind disagreement if it’s civilized. But some people come in with a ton of snark, condescension and rage, and then when it’s revealed that they don’t actually know what they’re talking about they double down, of course. I’ve started just blocking when I see the initial symptoms now.
- 14 days
The trouble is, there’s a bunch of awful people on the fediverse too.
I have absolutely no appetite for requiring ID to use social media, but the anonymity in any social media platform, regardless of its popularity, brings out the worst in some people.
- 14 days
More folks need to get comfortable with the block button. I have a list of users blocked for being shitty, but there sometimes seems to be this weird mentality that blocking users instead of debating them is weak or something.
- OwOarchist@pawb.socialEnglish14 days
Yeah, the ‘awful people’ in the fediverse really amount to, like, 5 to 10 people, total. Once you’ve blocked them, it’s great.
OpenStars@discuss.onlineEnglish
14 daysDon’t forget about their endless array of alts.
Actually, nvm - on pawb.social that might legit be true, if your admin does that for you already.
- 14 days
Also blocking communities, if you browse all and hate most of the posts and comments there.
- 14 days
I only experience people being shitty to me on the fediverse after I call them out for being a misogynist or misandrist or blah-phobic. Otherwise people are very inquisitive and supportive around here.
- 14 days
Fediverse isn’t all that great though despite all the cope, scroll through all and you see that it’s 50% news slop about how US conservatives bad that’s designed to keep you scrolling, 35% porn, 5% leftoid memes and 10% for everything else, pretty much like reddit minus the copious amount of rightoids. The culture is also pretty much the same.
Engagement and upvote hunting also does play a role, else there wouldn’t be people who make posting their day job or (as of late) bots automatically scraping popular posts from reddit to post here.
Like sure it’s decentralized, but what good does it do when it’s almost the same in content as the bad platform it denounces?
- 13 days
On the fediverse you can hold real conversations with people in comments. That rarely happens on Reddit.
However as the fediverse grows, even as we are seeing in this thread, it becomes increasingly impossible.
edit Wow there really are a lot of comments here. Are people botting these or are we reaching this real level of interaction? Forget about upvotes or views this is crazy.
- hypnicjerk@piefed.socialEnglish13 days
have you tried different instances? piefed.social blocks nsfw/nsfl as well as ragebait political figures’ names by default.
at any rate most of the complaints people have with reddit aren’t about its content, they’re about its slimy ass leadership, powertripping mods, and AI infestation. fediverse isn’t immune to any of that but it hasn’t metastasized here at least.

14 daysYard Sale. People stay in big places, because it gives them access to a wider pool of people. Veritasium also replicated this theory.
- TheMinions@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish14 days
Yeah this is pretty much the only reason I still use any social media like YouTube, Facebook, and Reddit.
YouTube cause I like the long form video essays (yes I know Nebula exists, but I am cheap).
Reddit for the niche communities that aren’t really popular here (Lemmy is my shitpost haven though).
Facebook only exists for me because of Facebook Marketplace and literally no other reason.
- 13 days
Also, for comedy, YouTube is just about the only thing outside of Dropout. Patron is picking up speed lately, but they still use YouTube often for the actual videos playing, plus of course only subscribing to 4 channels is already at least 20€ per month.
mesa@piefed.socialEnglish
14 daysWow this is a really good link. Thanks. Im reading through this now.
- 14 days
Fedi does suck in your not into tech or leftist politics. Those are where the bulk of the content comes from. The memes can be funny sometimes but the lack of video clips really holds it back. People love short video clips but they’re expensive to host. Catbox.moe is a good solution but you’re still pretty restricted in the size of clips you can upload.
- 14 days
tech or leftist politics
because that’s what the public that uses it likes.
bluesky was probably worse before the migration. more people = more content.
i do like its left bias and wish we keep it though. breath or fresh air from fascist-owned social media.
- hypnicjerk@piefed.socialEnglish13 days
imagine being so far left you actively simp for a warmongering dictator. go fuck yourself.
- 14 days
it sucks if you actually read the articles that get posted and don’t like 8-10 year old memes from reddit.
- BillyClark@piefed.socialEnglish14 days
8-10 year old memes from reddit
Those communities’ members are mainly 8-10 year olds, so it all adds up.
- 14 days

Because we all have the attention span of a dog. In some, that’s just unmanaged ADHD. In others, it’s because it’s our lovable movies in short formats so we’re trained 🤤
To help with attention span, read some long form fiction for once. Any kind, just read something over 80 pages. Libraries are free.
Guy Dudeman@lemmy.worldEnglish
14 daysIf you’re not into leftist politics, I don’t really want you on fedi to begin with.
- NotAnOtter@lemmus.orgEnglish14 days
Right so do you see how people that don’t have The Correct Opinion would view this as toxic.
I get it. We all hate the right here. You don’t need to lecture me on that. My point is that toxicity mostly emerges from people hating people that don’t have identical opinions as them. Slightly to the right = nazi. Slightly to the left = tankie.
Just chill my guy
- NotAnOtter@lemmus.orgEnglish14 days
There are a wide range of conservative opinions that I don’t find problematic. Certainly some are but same can be said for any party. I’m not an “enlightened centrist” guy, certainly the American Republicans/Maga are fucking awful. But that is just one manifestation of a range of policies.
If you can’t differentiate someone that is simply conservative vs someone who is full throated MAGA then that’s more of a political literacy issue YOU have. Someone isn’t evil simply for wanting reduced taxes or less immigration or reduced “sexual positivity”. There are ethical forms of these policies.
And because it’s mandatory on a forum based platform - no, I’m not conservative. Im further left than most of you. I’m just also less emotionally charged.
Guy Dudeman@lemmy.worldEnglish
14 daysHmmm you might be an otter after all… in which case you’re a liar, and not to be trusted. And therefore not an otter, because we are honorable and trustworthy. Which means you’re not a liar after all.

OFF WITH THEIR HEAD
I used to be more leftist than I am now actually - discourse with leftist trolls has made me realize that much of the rhetoric is childish thinking (not all - I suspect there’s far more to my journey, but some of the talking points definitely are).
A lot of people treat leftist beliefs like rightist ones, where the goal seems to be to become holier than thou and look down upon anyone who has not read the latest in an absolutely endless array of books.
Guy Dudeman@lemmy.worldEnglish
14 daysYeah, it’s really discouraging. We could do so many great things if we could work together. That’s why they want us all fighting amongst ourselves. I’d be totally open to tankies if they were open to “liberals” (anyone who doesn’t believe murder solves everything).
- BillyClark@piefed.socialEnglish14 days
That makes an echo chamber. I care more about people’s ability to have adult conversations than I do about their specific politics, but it seems like that criteria eliminates the overwhelming majority of modern conservatives from consideration.
Guy Dudeman@lemmy.worldEnglish
14 daysTankies can fuck off too, for the record. (He says, on a platform created by tankies)

13 daysThe comic leaves out the whole “joining the right server and communities for you” part. If nobody tells you before joining, then you see a bunch of horrible stuff. If someone does tell you before joining, then it’s a daunting prospect.

And if you just go to the “right server and communities” you get isolated in echo chambers.
Damned if you do…

13 daysEcho chamber is the new cancel culture. More often than not, someone thinks we’ve never heard their very common and shitty opinion.

Well, Lemmy on Voyager is just doom scrolling and toxic with less content. I must be missing something if it is otherwise.
MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.worksEnglish13 daysIt’s a nicer flavour of doom though, not as much toxicity in the comments even when the subject matter of threads can be very doomy
- 14 days
I’m one dude paying out of pocket to have a tiny instance (up for 3 years now) on the web that anyone can sign up on. No shareholders, no ads, no requests for payment or donation, no data hoarding or selling. With all of that in mind, people still won’t leave social media and sign up. They don’t actually know what they want because doomscrolling has them hooked. It would be fine if they deleted their accounts, signed up for nothing else, and went out to touch grass. But they won’t do that. They’ll, at most, ditch it for like a day or two and then go right back to old habits.
Paris is burning yet again because the working class is pissed off. The most the US will do is Go VoTe. We have zero self-control or drive here.
- 13 days
To be fair, I see a bit of ragebait occasionally on the fediverse too.
I’ve also seen a lot of smaller communities bend their own rules presumably for the sake of engagement as well. No ads is nice though and having real people around is also wonderful.
- 14 days
Yeah. Nothing toxic on fediverse lolololololololololololololololololololololioiloloollooloollol

That’s a fair assement. Fediverse is orders of magnitude better than any other social media.
FiredFloridaCop@lemmy.worldEnglish
14 daysThen, and I don’t mean to be a dick, but perhaps you should not recreationally shit on Lemmy?
Someone who’s new here might stumble upon your comment and take it as an honest depiction that Lemmy is so toxic it’s not worth bothering with, and just head back to Facebook/Twitter/Reddit/etc. because while both are deemed toxic at least those are easier to join/stay on.
- 14 days
I won’t be responsible for what uninformed people do. And it is my opinion that Lemmy is only just a little better than the rest. I still hate social media, even if I’m still here.
