11 hoursShoes are edible, you just need to boil them long enough. Rusty nails are a good source of iron. Pet foods are taste-tested by humans. Dumpsters behind restaurants and supermarkets often contain edible foods, be sure to check for raccoons before entering, though. Follow me for more frugal dining ideas.

1 dayThe Boomers legitimately do not comprehend that they largely did not teach their children how to cook.
They’ll complain about it, and belittle you for not knowing how, whine about your door dash habit… but it never registers in their neuron scented lead compartments that they were the ones who failed to pass on skills like cooking, and values like frugality.
But I mean that’s par for the course. Narcissists elect a narcissist rapist president, that’s your problem to deal with now bucko, just accept it, life’s tough, blah blah blah I’m completely allergic to acountability, the world exists to worship me, wheee!
hansolo@lemmy.todayEnglish
12 hoursBoomers didn’t want to cook. Look at the lives they pushed and romanticized: someone else doing all the work, or automated systems doing it in the future. They’re the reason why TV dinners were even a lasting thing. Recipes from the 60s through the 90s were abominations of canned foods mixed together and either baked or set in Jell-o. Once they were in charge, processed foods in disposable packaging were everything. Then they get all pissed off about excessive sodium in all the precessed foods killing them.
Their societal flex was being rich enough and having a rich enough society that they didn’t cook anything.

This reads as exactly the kind of thing boomers complain about: That young people complain how it is someone else’s fault instead of simply fixing it themselves.
sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish
17 hoursYes, true, Boomers do complain about being called out for their failures.
Parenting is a responsibility that they largely failed at, and they do not like being held accountable for their failures.
- terranoid@lemmy.cafeEnglish1 day
Eh, I taught myself. You have to learn to take care of yourself at some point, whether it’s fair or not.
Especially with the internet and youtube, there’s very little excuse not to learn how to cook.
A lot of us grew up with shitty parents, had to figure out survival on our own as teenagers. I don’t blame them. People fuck up tons of important things, especially being parents. They’re just other irresponsible people that don’t have their own lives figured out. You win by being better than they were, figuring out your own shit and living better lives. Sometimes you just have to get out at 18 and figure shit out for yourself. It’s not the end of the world and people have been doing that for a very long time.
sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish
17 hoursI also taught myself, yes, not being taught something is not the same thing as having no responsibility for learning that thing, and yes, taking control of your own life and making up for the defecits of your parents as best you can is a good idea, often vital.
But the point I am trying to make is that at scale, not everyone eventually teaches themself… and teaching your kids how to cook is… or at least was, one of the most important, oldest, traditional elements of being a parent to children. It is one of the most fundamental essential life skills to pass on.
And Boomers just largely decided they just didn’t need to do that, at a broad scale. And they are abberant in this respect. They are the first generation in at least US history to just assume that things they were taught or had the opportunity to learn … were simply universal and innate.
The spoiled narcissist generation broke a literally ancient human tradition, because they’re terrible at nurturing.
They also tend to just mock people who don’t know skills they know. Psychologically, what that does is make people feel like incapable idiots… many people who are consistently discouraged are less likely to believe they even can learn a new skill.
The ‘kick the kids out at 18’ is also largely a phenomenon widely popularized by Boomers… before them, it was much more common to have a multi generational household, or at least to house the kids untill they had their own capability to move out on their own.
Boomers cause problems and then blame other people for having to deal with the problems they caused… they can’t figure out the cause and effect, they can’t be responsible if it means acknowledging that they caused the problem.

Chicken and bean soup: 3 cans of Great Northern Beans (or any white bean) rinsed, 2 12 ounce cans of chicken breast (or a 1lbs of uncooked chicken breast that you cook and shred,) 2 carrots diced, 2 celeries diced, 1 yellow onion diced, 2-3 cloves of garlic, 1 tablespoon smoked parika, 1 tsp thyme, 1 tsp rosemary, 1 tablespoon bay leaf, salt and pepper to taste.
Fry the diced onions in olive oil to soften them up, add the carrots and celery. While they simmer for a bit to soften up open and rinse the beans. Rinse them good till the water runs clean this will help with reducing bean farts. Toss those beans in a crock pot set on low. Open the cans of chicken and drain and toss them in. Add a bit of water to the mix. Then throw in your veggies. Stir. Add your seasoning. Taste. You’ll probably add a good amount of salt till it’s yummy tasting. You can also add a bit more of the spices if you’d like. Cook in the crock pot for a few hours.
This is a cheap (like $10) meal that will provide something like 6-9 servings of breakfast soup. Super easy to make.

When will rich people learn do with less?
We’ve got billionaires and mega millionaires stinking up the place like dragons sitting on their hoards. Seems like there are some easy fixes that don’t involve turnips.

- runner_g@piefed.blahaj.zoneEnglish1 day
People like to meme on the Logitech controller but that was honestly one of the smarter decisions made in that sub. Decade of development, hundreds of plugins, thousands of support threads for integration issues. It honestly sounds better than a custom control solution that probably would not get enough test cycles to check every possibility.

There was a wired model available, but he used the wireless with known connectivity/battery issues. It’s just another dumb decision driven by hubris at the end of the day.

I do cook basically everything at home from scratch, it is way cheaper, but turnips? They’re flavorless and gross and frankly not that cheap why buy a turnip when you could buy a beet or carrot or potato for the same price? f tier vegetable
- heartSagan5@lemmy.zipEnglish21 hours
A turnip would suggest desperation. Also, with the deportations blowing away (some) the help in the fields, what veg will show in the supermarkets? The root veg will probably be okay since you can pluck them with a tractor, I believe?

Swedes are so much nicer than turnips. I subbed out a swede for turnip in my root veg rosti recipe and it ruined it. I also once nearly sliced my thumb off when trying to cut a swede. That’s the only thing I don’t like about swedes.
Turnips aren’t nice, I don’t get why anyone likes them. They’re really only good for jokes.
!Now I feel sorry for the turnips for being mean to them.!<
