Guys, I don’t think they really started the world war over trans people.

it always kinda confuses me that people see trans people being barred from military service as a bad law that should be repealed. like, yes. thank you. the us military absolutely should have fewer people in it and i’m in favor of anything that prevents my trans brothers and sisters being sent to die for oil
come on, fam, i bet if we lobby hard enough we can convince pete kegbreath to ban gays from service too

“Trans person” is such a weird term. What were they assigned at birth? Platypus?

How would you describe the category containing all of trans women, trans men, trans-identifying non-binary people etc. instead? Seems fine to me
they’re a person. what kind of person? a trans person. seems pretty clear-cut to me
The alternative I’m aware of is “person first language” such as “a person who is trans” which just feels clunky and annoyingly verbose.
Most groups I’m aware of (trans, autistic, and homeless people) have had the majority of the group reject this language due to a combination of that as well as the trait being an engrained part of who they are rather than just a “person who is/with X.”
I’m guessing it was originally gendered and the editor made it more inclusive.

2 daysSex and gender are different things, though.
A trans person who never transitions is still a trans person. (And if they have not yet transitioned, they’ve always been trans all the same)
But the phrase “transsexual” suggests that a trans person is trans only if they medically transition at some point.
Transgender is much better :)

It’s just an older term from before gender and sexuality were separated as terms.
Lim-Lim@piefed.blahaj.zoneEnglish
2 daysAnd nowadays, when people know better, “transsexual” feels like a slightly derogatory term to many transgender people. Better avoid it’s use :)

2 daysGender and sexuality were always separate, it just wasn’t used that way by lay people.
It’s also sometimes used to distinguish trans people who have or intend to medically transition. This can be a useful distinction when talking about support needs and experiences.

Oh definitely. But i think it’s healthier to correct the wrong term or tell people about better better use of words in the comments than censoring words.

2 daysIn a meme?
Not necessarily. It would clutter the meme quite a bit to add separate educational material to it. I’d say this was a good solution for this occasion. It also proviked a question whose answer included the needed information.

2 daysIt’s also viewed as a derogatory term by a lot of people in the US, because it’s used as a derogatory term by a lot of people in the US. Also conflates gender and sexuality which can be problematic. It’s just not the preferred term.
Doesn’t it more or less works with other countries with state transphobia, if we stray from the legal frameworks’ definitions of war?
I have adhd so I was at least used to having to jump through a million stupid hoops for meds that make me function
