I replied to someone saying that the USSR defeated the Nazis saying that it was a group effort. Got into an argument and called a Nazi repeatedly because “I was mad that the USSR defeated the Nazis and hated them for it” which is ridiculous. This isn’t the first time that’s happened on Lemmy. What’s up with that?

That’s just the admins of lemmy.ml for ya, here’s a megathread on them
You’ll get banned for showing support for Ukraine or going against Russian narratives or if you remind them of Putlers promise to not invade or just shit talking Putler in general
Or calling out propaganda sites - https://lemmy.world/post/32776038 | https://lemmy.world/post/33416433 | https://lemmy.world/post/34051329 | https://lemmy.world/post/35919522
Or so much more, I actually haven’t updated the megathread in a few months, but there’s more recent stuff on !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
ETA - Join the lemmy.ml boycott today and help foster a better Lemmy-verse! No more posts, comments (except to counter their propaganda ofc!) or upvotes on any comms on the Lemmy.ml instance! To make this easy you can do an instance block at Settings > Block Tab > Scroll to bottom > Input “lemmy.ml” and apply And consider donating to individual instances instead.

If you go to settings you should be able to block an entire instance and then won’t see them on /all
There’s a couple instances that always moderate like that. But you’re better off just hanging out, finding out for yourself, and then blocking what you don’t agree with.
But there’s another that bans people for downvoting AI, but only for a few days so people come back to be trolled. And at least one that bans anyone who tries to take anything seriously.
Stop looking at Lemmy as a single thing, there are dozens of instances acting largely autonomously and if one fucks up, make sure you call out that one and not the entire fediverse.

Fair enough. The way Lemmy works is kinda confusing.

You know how multiplayer games can have different servers with different rules and people? Same thing.
Just remember to block .ml and you should be fine! Not many others ban you for speaking.

.ml comm? It’s pretty funny how they can’t even run an online community without censorship.

??? Name a single successful online community that doesn’t regularly ban or remove posts. 4chan is the closest thing to that, but I wouldn’t call it a successful online community (and they still do ban and remove posts, just rarely).

Is that not the entire point of your lemmy account? Being pro censorship?
Ya the guys in Lemmy.ml tend to be pretty weird like that. They aren’t a monolith but in general they tend to think that Russia, China, and North Korea have never done anything bad and that all the evil in the world comes from capitalism in europe and America and that the whole world will be fixed when The Revolution comes. It is all sort of like evangelical Christianity with the numbers filed off, the president of the United States is like an appointed satan (appointed, not elected, they don’t believe elections work/are real in the west) who rules over hell which is the west (sometimes stylized as “Amerikkka”, often accompanied by an American flag emoji with a fire emoji on top of it or a jpeg of a Chinese emperor shooting a fireball), Karl Marx is sort of like Jesus and mao, lenin, Stalin, etc. are the disciples, and The Revolution is the rapture. It is a pretty interesting belief system and I think the .ml guys all mean well, but they can be really difficult to talk to sometimes, as you’ve seen.

First, some people on lemmy are simply stupid. Doesn’t make sense to engage with everyone.
Second, a lot of people on lemmy like to ignore what you really say and find some hidden messages everywhere. “You didn’t say you hate X so you must love Y, you nazi/homophobe/racist/communist/whatever”. Not much you can do about it. It’s best to just block them.

1 dayThey also seem to mad that you pointed out Russia was on the Axis side originally and is acting like they were always on the Allied side.
- 22 hours
No they didn’t. If a non-aggression pact allowing Nazi annexation of territory is equivalent to an alliance, then France and Britain allied with the Nazis multiple times before the Soviets. There is a reason about how the only non-aggression pact that you hear about is Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and not the Munich Agreements or the Franco-German Declaration, etc. The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact came out of the Soviets being turned down multiple times by France and Britain to forming an anti-fascist alliance.
This is the selective remembrance of appeasement. It is ignored that that encompassed many non-aggression pacts with the Nazis and is only remembered to selectively invoke for war hawking. If we say a nation is evil, than not being on board with a war of aggression is actually evil (Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, etc.) and you are just like Chamberlain, whose only motivation was being a pussy. You can discuss the morality or effectiveness, but Molotov-Ribbentrop was to try to delay the war for preparation and that the Nazis wouldn’t be stupid enough to start a war without their own oil and steel supplies and without preventing a possibility of a two front war with France/Britain, and the Soviets were caught flat-footed because of overestimating the rationality of the Nazis. There was also the worry that France and Britain might eventually join the Nazis since they were pretty vocal about fascism being a possible necessary evil as it is the most extreme form of anti-communism, even though the attempt of appeasement was trying to sit out an eventual war between the Nazis and USSR, since Judeo-Bolshevism was a thing Nazis believed before they even took power.
- kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish20 hours
Britain didn’t invade a country and split it with the Nazis lmao. They were hardly good guys (just ask the Bengalis), but they didn’t form an offensive alliance with literally Hitler.
- RmDebArc_5@piefed.zipEnglish13 hours
Wasn’t Czechoslovakia (partially) split between the Nazis and Poland similar to how the Soviets initially split Poland with the Nazis? Not sure what Britain did in that direction, but this what I have heard from someone living/formerly living in the Czech republic
- 19 hours
It’s a lie that USSR-Germany made any agreement to split Poland. USSR liberated it before Germany could take control of the east.
- 19 hours
No, the USSR did agree to take Eastern Poland in Molotov-Ribbentrop, but they did wait until after the Nazis took the western part before starting their invasion. A combination of waiting to see if Poland could fight off the Nazis, meaning that they didn’t have to worry about further Nazi expansion, and after that moving the border west to provide more territory needing to be taken in an eventual war with Germany.
- 18 hours
Secret protocol agreement may have existed, or the forgery backed up by 1990s Russia cozying up to west and joining Stalin derangement syndrome unanimity.
Still, the USSR did not encourage/applaud a nazi controlled Warsaw, and weather Germany could take entire country or not, would have been easier to buy tolerance for nazi controlled Warsaw. Requiring a defensive buffer proved prescient. “If you want a pact, accept us taking Warsaw”
- 19 hours
While it is not justifying it, but is that really a major distinction. The purpose of several previous non-aggression pacts was to sign off on Nazi territorial annexation (again, selectively remembered with appeasement) of saying “it is okay to take the Sudetenland” and “We wont use the Anschluss as a Causus Belli”. The reason the Soviets took the eastern part of Poland was to push the border west and that they felt that they could justify this by the fact that it was part of the Russian Empire and Soviet Russia during the revolution and that it was lost to get peace in WW1. That does not justify it, just that any talk about the Soviets, rather than France and Britain, being more compromised and accommodating to the Nazis or that the Soviets were more pro-Nazi than the West is demonstrably wrong and rewritting history for cold war reasons.
- 20 hours
Lol please just shut up with your rewriting of history. No one is going to listen to your braindead ruzzian take on how the USSR was the good guys.

Lemmy was started by authoritarian communists (often called tankies) who got banned from Reddit, so they are generally more abundant here. They have their own alternate version of reality where the USSR was the most perfect society to ever exist and the west is the source of all evil in the world.
There are a few instances (aka servers) they tend to congregate on, but the main one is Lemmy.ml. It was the first server made so despite its extreme ideological slant, it still has a lot of subscribers. Just avoid any communities on Lemmy.ml and this shouldn’t happen anymore.

The Soviets raped and killed everything in sight when they entered Romania. They can go to hell with their “help”. They fought the nazis, and they took advantage of the rest of us.
Nevermind how they installed a communist regime that ruined romania for like a decade or whatever. Not that communism is bad but that one sure was.
- 24 hours
I don’t think you speak for all Romanians
Majority of Romanians view Ceaușescu and communist era positively, study shows
Romania’s president has expressed concern after a new survey highlighted a growing sense of nostalgia for the communist era, with former totalitarian leader Nicolae Ceaușescu viewed positively by most Romanians.
The study, released this week, revealed that nearly 56% of Romanians believe the communist regime—widely regarded as one of the harshest of its era—brought more benefits than drawbacks to Romania.
A large majority of respondents—over 66%—told researchers they now regard former dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, who ruled the country with an iron fist from 1965 to 1989, as a good leader.
The Institute for Public Opinion Polling (INSCOP) study, conducted with the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER), suggests that nostalgia for the past is tied to widespread disenchantment around the country’s current prospects.
Just over 27% of respondents said they believed things in Romania are heading in a good direction, with more than 63% feeling that the country is on the wrong track.
Groups most likely to share positive sentiments about the communist era included the over-60s, people on lower incomes, and those living in the countryside or small towns. The same groups expressed the greatest disillusionment with present-day Romania.
In total, over 48% of Romanians said they believed life was better under communism.

The majority’s opinion doesn’t mean shit. Do I need to remind everyone that America voted an old geezer pedophile billionaire bastard for president?
No, I don’t speak for all Romanians. I’m glad I don’t.
Ceausescu was an installed leader that had only Russia’s interests in mind, which wanted everything the leaders from other countries had, like Russia, North Korea, and other such countries. He wanted massive parrades, massive buildings, massive ego-boosting bullshit.
He then made all lthat happen. In the process, indebted the country MASSIVELY. It took us decades to recover, and the Romanian worker paid for it, not him and his cronies. In the end he was executed by the revolution on Christmas for his acts of treason against his working class. Those people that stood up to him were heroes.
Those that praise Ceausescu often say that he got rid of our debts. BUT HE CREATED THOSE DEBTS, with his ego-spending and megalomany
Those that like Ceausescu are idiots. They are the same people that like George Simion and Calin Georgescu.

No, that is Nazi propaganda that the US continued propagating through the cold war since it made the Soviets look bad. While there were definitely rapes that occurred, that happens with every occupying army, there was never any evidence of this being a policy or something tolerated by the officers. Any attempt to quantify this shows that American and British soldiers were more prolific in rapes of French women than Soviets anywhere on the Eastern Front, even though the usual refrain is just that the Soviets were better at covering it up than the US or UK, the lack of evidence is itself evidence. Also, most of the studies of this shows that having armed women combat fighters on the front and a more gender integrated military really cut down on the usual “boys will be boys” attitude of not addressing these things.
The other attempt to try to demonstrate this is the huge spike of recorded abortions in East Germany after the war, but if you think for a second about how Nazi Germany and West Germany outlawed abortions, but abortions became fully legal under East Germany, there might have been another explanation.

1 dayWas not called a world war for nothing. There were tons of countries on the “Allies” side and tons on the “Axis” side. A simple search for WWII Allies member or WWII Axis members will show who fought on each side.
There are to many to list here. Britain, Soviet Union, USA, Canada and China to name a few for the allies.
Nazi Germany, Italy, Japan, Republic of Finland, Hungary for the Axis side.
Edit forgot Italy.

A non aggression pact is avoiding war, not joining a side, in the majority of cases.
Unless the pact includes defining who they can invade without stepping each other’s toes like the USSR and Germany.
