• TBH now that tech fascism is a big thing IRL, I’ve kinda lost my taste for Cyberpunk. Hits a little too close to home, and it’s too obvious that many tech fascists are consuming Cyberpunk works as instructional, not cautionary tales.

    • “Breaking: scientist invents the Torment Nexus from the cautionary scifi tale Don’t Invent the Torment Nexus”

    • Well, the prospect of a cyberpunk future is a lot more enticing if you associate yourself with the CEO of the antagonistic Evilcorp Inc., instead of the impoverished masses.

Then there’s also the hubris that rich fucks read every cautionary tale with. “Surely the powerful technology and the power it will give me wont corrupt me, I’ve read the cautionary tales about how power corrupts so I’ll know what to do to avoid that! Also I’m built different.”

      • Then there’s also the hubris that rich fucks read every cautionary tale with. “Surely the powerful technology and the power it will give me wont corrupt me, I’ve read the cautionary tales about how power corrupts so I’ll know what to do to avoid that! Also I’m built different.”

I think this is assuming way too much intelligence, self-awareness, and introspection for said rich fucks. Sadly, wealth is not an indicator of any of those things.

      • Dead on with the first point, but do these fucks even have enough morality to genuinely believe at some point that they are the good guys? Seems like it’s pure egoism from start to finish.

Brother WHY do you think they are able to believe to be so special to be uncorruptible… xD

        • I think everyone thinks that they are in some sense justified to do what they do. At the very least via post-hoc rationalizations.

    • Transhumanism is a big theme in Cyberpunk, it just doesn’t necessarily mean that Cyberpunk is correct about how common voluntary cybernetic augmentations, genetic engineering and the like are going to be.

    • Glasses/contact lenses, pacemakers, insulin pumps, cochlear implants, prosthetic limbs.

Some stuff does help us and isn’t done purely for evil. It is the monkey murdering brain chips you gotta worry about. And maybe some of the listed stuff being taken over by monopolistic corporations like the glasses industry.

      • Do people think of cybernetics when they think of transhumanism? I can see the continuum, but I think of transhumanism as being about more fundamental changes

      • Mobile phones, as well. Thing is, though, I wouldn’t describe a mobile phone as “the next step in evolution”—it would seem downright silly to, even.

    • Yeah theres no fucking way I’m ever getting body mods, even if they come out

I would rather not have to charge my fucking limbs

2000 masses - Be careful with the internet, honey, what goes there does not dissapear!

2025 masses - So I dropped my twerkin on insta and got lit feedback, gotta feed incels on onlyfans and then…

    • It’s “a” step, not “the next” step. Evolution has no direction except “different”.

    unrestrained capitalism leads to destruction

Thank goodness we live in a restrained capitalist society.

    • Good old slow and steady sensible destruction, like when I was a kid!!

  • Cyberpunk as a genre was just a bunch of xenophobic yanks scared that it looked like the people they locked into concentration camps would have an economy stronger than theirs.

  • cyberpunk is a shitty game I wouldn’t even play it if I stole it. Things have gotten so bad I desire almost nothing and what is even free is not even worth my time. It is really a blessing. These capocorpos can’t even squeeze out mediocre turds anymore. Everything sucks for real. Not even worth stealing. Only low IQ people like this shit. Sorry if I hurt your feelings. Not even worth stealing hahaha

    • Cyberpunk is a genre of science fiction (mostly literature) often credited with being sparked by William Gibson’s “Neuromancer”

It is a far larger and more influential piece of contemporary science fiction and pop culture than simply being an open world video game

The title of the video game is in reference to the genre that has existed since the 1980s, and honestly the game is more of a retro future 1980s style sci Fi action/crime thriller game than a genuine “Cyberpunk” work of fiction, at least thematically speaking. Uh weirdly Deus Ex (1) is sort of more Cyberpunk in essence than “Cyberpunk 2077”

(William Gibson himself has stated that the cyberpunk 2077 game essentially only shares an aesthetic theme with the genre. A retro future 1980s aesthetic essentially being all that it shares with some cyberpunk fiction. Cyberpunk fiction has nothing to do necessarily with the 1980s vibe, Neuromancer and other early works simply happened to have been written during that time period.)
