It is a really good “proving ground” for longer term human habitation of something like a settlement on a foreign body, without being so far away that some kind of rescue is basically impossible should something go wrong.
Also, going from Earth > Moon > Mars, or where ever, is probably less complex from a total at one time payload perspective than trying to move everything you would need for that longer term destination all at once.
Plus as you alluded to, you can’t really put a price on the political good will that comes from doing something like that. The Moon is a cheaper way to get that good will and some experience from point one as a starting point.

I don’t think I have ever heard of Ubuntu be described as anything other than the “default Linux” distro that you use or give to someone if all you/they care about is good first and third party support.
It is the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy of the Linux desktop OS world.
News flash to the press, its not the electric cars, the rockets, the concept of a social media platform, etc that makes these dudes undesirable. It is that they are genuinely shitty people that use the proceeds of those products to do shitty things.

Can’t wait to hear from the crowd that said it was fine when they introduced an ad tier because they still had a non-ad tier. Despite everyone that has seen how this always goes before telling them it was only a matter of time before legally watching Disney owned content was going to mean paying a substantial monthly fee and having to sit through ads.
Let this be a lesson everyone that said that. Once they build the mechanism to have the ads, they will not be able to resist turning up the dial for the easy ad money.

Naturally the rights holder failing to properly secure their shit is everyone else’s problem.
Someone has been studying up on the Microsoft Group Policy way of wording things.
