Hardneck doesn’t last as long but it is best for our climate. We will likely make garlic salt or garlic powder in the dehydrator if we can’t use it before it sprouts.

This is my spouse’s handiwork. The main goal was to direct the water towards an existing French drain and reduce risk of flooding the septic field during spring melt and intense precipitation.

The drainage part of the french drain is questionable, but we also want to be able to pull rainwater for plant watering needs. It’s been slow going, but this angle makes it look amazing.

Plants are a mix of planted and volunteered. There is a large marsh rose, pussy willow and yellow dogwood which are all blending into each other lol. The Joe Pye Weed and Goldenrood are blooming, as are the Black Eyed Susans. The Rose Mallow will be next.

Our soil is… difficult. That’s why this land had a house on it, not a farm lol. Still, plenty of life in the soil, we would just like to make it a bit fluffier. Until then I will free all the worms from the garlic tendrils.

The spoils:

These are all from garlic harvested last year, which was a bad year due to leek moths. We have since rotated location and have no evidence of the pest in this crop. Yay!

Hopefully that means we can build our numbers up again.

I brought them inside to dry a bit, then I will brush off the dirt and hang them to cure. The largest bulbs will be put aside to plant in October and the rest will be enjoyed.

This is what my climate was like in the past year. It has been an unusually dry summer and we are under a severe drought advisory, but luckily the well had been holding up okay.
