  • I had a theory years ago that r/AmITheAsshole was a testing ground for creating a model of public respectability politics by fine tuning which events did and did not garner support for the OP / the other belligerent. “They hate cheaters but what if she’s being physically abused? What if he’s being physically abused? What if it’s not physical but verbal abuse? What if–” and so on and so forth until you can algorithmically decide exactly how much and which bullshit you need to either dig or make up on someone for public opinion to turn on them.

Working healthcare, I tell all other healthcare / first responders “I hope you have a boring shift” (every once in a while a younger person objects, but they are almost immediately hushed / corrected by their senior coworker).

But it occurs to me that many office / sedentary workers might not find this to be a blessing. What would I say to a desk worker that might be equivalent?

  • I made a printable pattern that allows you to origami fold two d6 dice from a sheet of letter paper. It means I can give my acute psych patients board games if they ask and even if they’re sick enough to insert them into their orifices there’s very minimal harm possible.

    spoiler

I have other games that also utilize pieces made very similar to the pieces used by this chess set and have even made checkers to accompany that set.

So for the non-nurses lurking, one of the big parts of an inpatient admission assessment is getting the diet order right. Are you allergic to anything, do you need your food ground up, are you diabetic salt or fluid restricted, etc. And a ridiculous amount of times I have patients deny having any cultural restrictions then I specifically further clarify DO YOU EAT PORK and they go ‘oh wait yeah no I don’t eat pork.’ MOTHERFUCKER THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS ASKING.

And I’m a night nurse so you know what their very next meal is gonna be? Eggs and bacon / sausage. These motherfuckin patients be accidentally lying so often I’ve permanently changed my entire admission process. And before you even say this is a Jewish thing, my primary patient population is black so if anything it’s a Muslim thing (although not even that, it turns out a bunch of black people are barely even religious or Christian even and just don’t eat pork just because).

  • Nah my coworkers were also in it with me none of us sat down for like 12h except when I ate too many cupcakes between admissions and had to bolt for the off-unit toilet before I shit myself and some of it was funny at least in that darkly absurd way that the slow decay of the American healthcare system is. I couldn’t have picked better people to spend a shitty night with there are like 1-2 people who would have made it an even swap and some of the techs could have been better but none of the actual mid coworkers were there so.
