Nah, they’d be off the track by 15 yards and claim the trolly veered straight for them and they feared for their life

The true solution here is to stand your ground and shoot the aggressive attacking trolley in self defense. Sure, it won’t stop the trolley, but you’ll get to legally shoot someone and you might even still have time to jump out of the way after you run out of bullets.

You have to make the driver think it’s their fault. So you have to keep it on the scheduled track, but sabotage the brakes just enough that they cannot stop in time to save anyone, only to observe the terrible aftermath

If you go with the stand your ground solution, it doesn’t matter what the driver thinks. Because you have all the evidence needed that he came at you with malicious intent, and also the driver is dead at the end and cannot contradict you. If a trolley comes at you like that, you have a legal right to stand your ground and defend yourself with lethal force. At that point no other moral or philosophical factors matter once you decide to stand your ground. (Legality may vary by jurisdiction.)

trolleyposting until we all collectively act on our morality that deems people dying in camps and war as very very bad and as such need to overthrow our government by physically removing them by force.

Why shoot the driver? You want their suffering to be psychological, not physical. Use the gun to quickly kidnap 6 people, steal some rope, and find the nearest track switch. Probably not in that order.

Brilliant. Trick the driver into thinking you’re doing the utilitarian thing by switching to the track with 1 person, and then pull the switch at the right time to multitrack drift
Shoots driver, then commits suicide, body gets run over anyway, everyone on the train is confused but glad the train wasn’t disrupted.

Then they arrive at their station and continue at being productive members of society for the rest of the workday. The wheels of capitalism gets to turn for another day and everybody lets out a sigh of relief that doom wasn’t upon them personally just yet and then they wonder if there’s perhaps anything new on Netflix they can binge after work when parked on their couches like an adult-sized depressed fetus just trying to recharge the tiniest little bit of energy, just enough to get up and do it all again tomorrow. “Or maybe there’s anything on HBO? No… What about Disney+ then? Also no…”
It’s the happiest of outcomes!
The trolley is approaching, but you are nothing but a meaningless organism on a small rock in the middle of a vast void of nothingness. Does the track matter?
