The older the internet gets, the more it’s like a city that keeps building on top of its own ruins. What’s is your favorite bit of internet archeology if memes are like artifacts and relics?
Probably de-motivational posters? Those are the oldest big thing I can think of.

This is semi adjacent bc I was feeling nostalgic earlier and I watched about an hour worth of vines while making dinner.

Pretty sure this is actually older than Keyboard Cat.
Edit:
Ok so, this whargarbl is 2008, technically, keyboard cat was first uploaded in 2007, but it didn’t “become a meme” untill somebody else used the clip at the end of another video, for comical effect, in 2009.

Split between the “I haz a buckit” sea lion and the migraine guy who says “Not this shit again.”

Technically that was a screensaver not a meme. How about the Oswald/Ruby band?

So many references from the pre-youtube era occupy a permanent part of my brain.

I’m in my 40s and Homestar/TGS/Sbemail quotes are more of my vernacular than I even know. I’ll watch an old toon with my partner and they’ll be like “THAT’S WHY YOU SAY THAT IN THAT WAY?!”
The system is down. There’s a swiss cake roll in your motherboard.
I have to stop myself from making references, because it’s so old that they don’t land anymore.

Wait until you get so old that you use the actual product this meme is advertising.

When I was young and that video was new, one weekend I went to hang out with a bunch of friends. They were all quoting it and I hadn’t seen it. I was real worried about Al’s butt until someone showed me the video.
