This should be overlapped with Pornhub’s viewing data per state for a good laugh.

  • 9 days

Now overlay the map of states where the most gay porn is consumed. All the anti gay states will be the top consumers.

  • 10 days

Interesting but not beautiful. No labels for the state names, even Americans don’t know the geography that well. The smaller states need numbers with lines. Maryland and D.C. overlap and Delaware has no number.

    • Seriously! I thought this was an old jpg getting recycled until I zoomed in on the bottom 😬

Zooming in on the bottom is also how to be gay 🌈

I wonder how the results changed if the question was put a different way. Even I struggle to answer this a bit. I don’t think society should “accept” my homosexuality. There’s plenty things I don’t “accept” either but I just stay out of it then. No need to like it - just don’t be a jerk and let me live my life. I don’t need your validation.

    • just don’t be a jerk and let me live my life

      That’s literally acceptance…

    • 10 days

Wouldn’t the opposite of acceptance imply eradication?

      • 10 days

Perhaps to some but one does not automatically follow from the other. There are additional steps to be taken in between to get from not-liking to wanting it destroyed.

In my experience most people don’t have an issue with gays existing. The issue is with forcibly shoving that acceptance down their throats.

        • The issue is with forcibly shoving that acceptance down their throats.

Eww, you sound like a maga

    • 10 days

I mean good for you, but as a fellow homosexual, I demand acceptance.

Tolerance is a pathetically low bar. We deserve equality and respect.

      • 10 days

Respect is not deserved but earned on a individual basis for demonstrating good character. It has nothing to do with your sexuality.

        • 10 days

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.

I’m curious, what about that persons response makes you feel they’re brainwashed?

I am from here and Florida, at least in the cities, is queer as fuck. I hung out in gay bars as a teenager, because they were safe spaces for all sorts. We used to have a very big gay film festival in St Pete, our mayor in Tampa is a lesbian. I have no idea who that 45% is.

  • What?! Wisconsin, the “Alabama of the north”, has the same acceptance rate as Cali? I did not expect that.

    • First, the term is “Wississippi”. Second, I totally agree. I was shocked to see how well we did.

I think, like usual, Madison and Milwaukee carry the load here.

    • I thought Cali would be higher given their reputation, but I’m also not that surprised.

      • There’s a lot of latinos in CA and they’re pretty religious.

Source: Some of my best friends are latino and aren’t religious but their families are super religious. Which makes things real difficult for my gay latino friend.

      • I’m visibly queer & live in the SF Bay Area, and while I feel relatively safe, I’ve also encountered far more homophobia/lesbophobia/transphobia than I would have expected

      • There are a LOT of rednecks here out in the boonies. In the big cities the rate is higher, as with most places.

    • 10 days

Don’t care who they be fuckin, can they pound a beer and can they defend the honor of Cheesus is all that matters man

  • I grew up in Connecticut which is largely an irrelevant state, but whenever I see maps like this Connecticut ends up being close to the top which makes me feel good.

    • Even in the best state 13% said no. More than 1 in 10. The fucking whole country is filled with disgusting human beings. I wonder what they’d say to the obvious follow up question of “Okay, what do you think should be done with homosexual people?”

    • Idk, New Jersey or Delaware or whatever tiny “states” are in that northeast cluster are going to have to do a lot more than be cool with gay stuff for me to ever visit lol. WA and CA are gay as hell, despite the slightly lower score I feel like either one would be a way better place to bring your boyfriend

      • Where exactly is you’re impression of NJ coming from? NJ is dense, but diverse and pocketed, but even the conservative pockets wont say anything to your face.

Delaware is just office space, suburbs, and tax evasion so I don’t know why anyone would go anyway.

        • Just be careful not to walk for more than a few minutes in one direction or you’ll end up in another state.

      • 10 days

New Jersey gets a lot of undeserved hate because it’s part of NYC popular culture to shit on them. And as a result, that bleeds in to national popular media.

New Jersey is nicer, the people are friendlier, the streets aren’t lined with fucking filth and the buildings aren’t falling apart the way they are in NYC. It’s a bit cheaper to boot.

By far, my time in Newark was more pleasant than my time in NYC. At this point I wouldn’t go back to NYC unless something pretty compelling made it worth dealing with the bullshit New York puts you through.

        • It’s weird to me when people shit on NJ despite never going there. It’s the same energy as when people repeat stupid jokes from reddit to feel like they’re part of the group. Makes my skin crawl a little.

Also weird, but understandable I guess, is when people’s only experience with NJ is like the airport, or the Secaucus train station, and they assume the whole state is like that. Like thinking all of Nevada is Vegas’ strip. It’s not representative.

NJ is fine. I mean, I detest the suburbs so large chunks of it are not for me.

At this point I wouldn’t go back to NYC unless something pretty compelling made it worth dealing with the bullshit New York puts you through.

NYC does have a lot of stuff happening. Pretty much any band on tour will play NYC, for one thing.

          • They’ll also play in Chicago, which is a far better experience all around.

            • Maybe! I’ve been a few times and it was fine, but you don’t really get a sense of a place staying a weekend.

I think Chicago you can get by without owning a car? That’s one of my top priorities

              • You can!*

Public transit in Chicago is some of the better public transit I’ve used. I’ve stayed for weeks on end without ever needing a car. Though taxis/Uber sometimes does a little of the heavy lifting there.

*Very much dependent on where in Chicago you live/stay and where you want to go. Downtown is fantastic, Southside and most of the suburbs are meh. You might need a car out there.

        • Counterpoint: the people I deal with in person from Jersey are on average way more annoying than the surrounding states.

  • This is like asking if gravity and other facts of reality exist. It’s equally dumb to reject gravity as it is to reject the range of human sexuality, the Kinsey scale from 0 to 6. Lots of bisexual people who pretend they are straight and why they think Kinsey 6 people can choose to be “straight” too, but are wrong, and they don’t have the courage to be honest. Lack of integrity but think they’re tough and vote against equality for the ones who are courageous to be out and honest.

Oh! Oh! Now corelate the data against average household income!

        • Or that comfort makes you tolerant. This would explain Florida’s position of being relatively gay for how poor it is: mostly beach, pretty chill. Less need for a scapegoat I guess ;)

          • 9 days

Well, there’s also a lot of pockets of low low income earners that throw off the average in a few states. Nevada has a ton of people that live in the middle of the desert on nothing but meth and fentanyl, but Vegas and Reno are obviously super tolerant. Florida would be the similar, I imagine.

But yeah, so comfort might be a real factor here.

  • For the most liberal state in the Union, “Commiefornia” has an awful lot of conservatives and bigots

My university campus alone has had two hate crimes in the last year, one against a Muslim student and one against a gay student

    • Californian here. My LGBTQ+ friends have all sorts of bigot stories. Bigots are like worms/maggots. You can find them anywhere.

    • California is so goddamn huge that it can’t help but represent a wider range of demographics. I’d be interested to know how it compares against the overall national rate of acceptance.

Edit: If you average all of the numbers on the map together, the national average is 67%. Whether or not that’s a responsible way to work with this data… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • Some of the big cities have mostly the progressives, but once out into the countryside or further away and into certain suburbs there are angry red areas.

    • 10 days

I mean if you’re looking for the 25-30% they still think Trump is doing a good job and they approve, that’s it

  • I’m ashamed that WA isn’t higher. I don’t know why we put up with the half of the state east of the mountains, they’re just our cross to bear.
