Palmer Luckey of Anduril is teaming with Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences to launch Warhound, a startup dedicated to genetically engineering and cloning dogs for service in war, police work and first responder work.
Speaking to Wired, Lamm explained that the project was twofold. One part of the project would oversee the genetic engineering and cloning of the ideal dogs for war, and the other would develop tech for them to use on battlefields.

Palmer Luckey is such a loser. He makes absolute bank by selling Oculus to Facebook and then decides with all that money his time is best spent developing weapons to help kill people more efficiently. We need more people like MySpace Tom who, after making a load of money, stepped away and pursued his artistic interests and turns out the guy is a really good photographer.
- Nobody@anarchist.nexusEnglish12 days
Palmer Luckey’s partner at Oculus died under mysterious circumstances right before the sale to Facebook.
- SynonymousStoat@lemmy.worldEnglish12 days
Damn, I didn’t know about that. Guess I have a new rabbit hole to inspect.
- SynonymousStoat@lemmy.worldEnglish11 days
Looked into it and it doesn’t really seem like mysterious circumstances. From the article I read, he was struck by a car that was already fleeing police while he was crossing a crosswalk.

Died in an accident involving a police chase. The Facebook deal was closed several months later.
- Nobody@anarchist.nexusEnglish10 days
It’s been scrubbed. The story I remember was that he was blocking the Facebook sale. One mysterious accident later, the deal is back on track.

After selling to facebook he got flack. And then became an open supporter of Trump. He became hated.
My guess is that he’s a narcissist similar to Elon Musk, so him hearing himself called a looser and asshole (like he is) triggers him to be worse. To go “I’ll show him”. To do a nazi salute or you know, engineer dogs for war to oppress people more efficiently. Any supporter of Trump is obviously a psycho with no moral center, but if they also have narcissism and money and power, well it can get much worse.
- SynonymousStoat@lemmy.worldEnglish11 days
The likelyhood of him reading comments like this is incredibly low whereas other random people may come across it and not have any idea about how terrible he has shown himself to be. So I think talking about him like this is a net positive.
Edit: I don’t think him getting flack caused him to change to be the person he is today, if anything getting massive amounts of money freed him to be more open about who he truly is inside. Maybe catching flack online also helped him in taking off the mask so to say.
- AlteredEgo@lemmy.mlEnglish11 days
Yeah I agree with both points. Also I read that he was a long term Trump supporter long before he ran for president.
And treating these malignant narcissists with kid gloves is useless I agree. But they are obsessed with their image, with their false ego or mirror image. So he will read how he has seen. This is of course speculation and I’m not a psychologist, but that is what I think happened to Musk. He played this image of a good tech “captain of industry”, then when he got rejected because of his greed and lies he switched to a different persona. And there is no real persona. You can even see similar things with Trump, very far back he was a democrat / liberal, but these malignant narcissists don’t have a real personal.
Not sure how useful any of this is really. In the end we live in the age of monsters. And they are all across the political mainstream spectrum now.

Palmer Lucky is one of the worst but MySpace Tom isn’t much better.

12 daysThis guy looks like the personification of a 4chan message board and needs to be punched in the face. A lot.
- raspirate@lemmy.worldEnglish12 days
There’s a reason for that. He’s literally a 4chan brony. If you really want to, you could Google Palmer Luckey brony pic and see for yourself. Yes, the picture is real and has been around much longer than AI has existed.
- 12 days
I’m gonna say it, and I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks.
This motherfucker, and anyone else with the same idea, needs to fucking die. In the most gruesome, painful way whoever manages it can achieve so that it’s a clear fucking warning to the next motherfucker
- 12 days
Similar to the guy who made all those dogs with breathing problems (pugs especially. They arent cute, they cant fucking breathe)
- RidgeDweller@sh.itjust.worksEnglish12 days
Sure, them too. But this guy created Anduril Industries to develop non-manned AI drones to kill whoever gets labeled a target by whoever buys his terror machines. This guy is a threat to humanity beyond the pug breeder. He and people with ideas like him deserve to die with much higher priority imo.
- Insekticus@aussie.zoneEnglish12 days
They really are. The hoarding of wealth isn’t seen as the disease that it is.
The ancient Greeks knew greed was one of humanity’s worst traits. Even Lycurgus knew money was a poison of the heart and banned the homoioi (spartan soldiers/equals) from owning money, they could keep goods (like food, bronze, iron, cattle etc).
- NinePeedles@sh.itjust.worksEnglish12 days
I can’t imagine how many dogs this bag of diarrhea is going to kill for this project.

I’m reminded of the lab scene in Alien: Resurrection with all the previous iterations of Ripley.
- Furbag@pawb.socialEnglish12 days
Dude could have used that money to fund animal shelters across the world and received a standing ovation.
It takes a special kind of fucking loser to come up with this idea and follow through on it.

$200,000,000 to get dogs into war who will be killed by some $20 drone with a bomb
- x0x7@lemmy.worldEnglish11 days
If they can make 10,000,000 attack dogs to get blow up by those drones, and somehow avoid having any variable costs, then the dogs will be cheaper than the drones.
I think that’s within a practical scale.
- LuzTheBuz@lemmy.zipEnglish11 days
I can’t think of a reasonable scenario where, even given the drones are in short supply, dogs would be a necessary target over higher priority like the dog handlers. Maybe if you strap a bunch of bombs onto the dogs, but that would be really fucked

TF is it with these tech lord trash taking LOTR names for businesses? Anduril, Palantir, etc?
- Avicenna@programming.devEnglish12 days
“The Palantir stones themselves cannot lie, but powerful users like Sauron can selectively control what is shown to trick or break the will of others (such as Denethor or Saruman).”
Almost like a confession. It is like some idiot read 1984 and decided it is in humanity’s best interest to install the goverment in the book, completely senseless and sociopathic.

They think they are high elves while we are hobbits. They want to rule the world. They have actually proven that you can have a level of money that everyone will indulge your mental illness.
Anyone else would have been shot for infiltrating the government with plans to end the world but we live in HELL AND NO ONE GIVES A FUCK OR WILL DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.
“Don’t look up” was the most accurate portrayals of our stupid species ever written
And before everyone praises the glorious corporate Dems, Palmer Lucky and his gross company mostly support Democrats and Palmer and Musk are completely integrate in our Army with drones, ranks, and military units that have committed multiple suspicious suicides.

- 11 days
Do they still qualify as nerds if they’re the antithesis to the morals in the story they nerdrd over?
- boonhet@sopuli.xyzEnglish11 days
Honestly, good question. Does having to be an X nerd mean you should agree with the morals of X and if you become a millionaire, does that invalidate nerddom?

No. A nerd is a nerd, but they can be socialized in optimal and suboptimal ways.

But we already have robodogs. Boston Dynamics has been soft-launching them for years, innoculating the masses into adoring them & accepting them before unveiling their full wrathful capabilities. Why breed & abuse living creatures when we already have terrifying robots to do bloodshed for us?

Boston dynamics is thankfully mostly useless bullshit. Dancing robots won’t run a factory.

Boston Dynamics made a robodog that doesn’t immediately trip over it’s own feet on gravel and has a thirty minute active runtime before it needs a two hour recharge.
