I like what Kagi are doing, even though I don’t pay for their search engine. I’ve been enjoying browsing the Kagi Small Web portal recently.
squirrel@cake.kobel.fyiEnglish
13 daysYou can easily selfhost a portal like that with wander or try one of these linked wander consoles.
- 13 days
I’ve been a Kagi subscriber for 6 months and this is the first I’m hearing of the small web portal, so thank you!
- 13 days
You can also use marginalia, an open source small web search engine for this :)
- potustheplant@feddit.nlEnglish13 days
That doesn’t mean invalidate their comment. The title’s claim is false.
TaterTot@piefed.socialEnglish
13 daysThe title’s claim is false?
Does Kagi not have a Fediverse Forms search toggle now?
- potustheplant@feddit.nlEnglish12 days
It doesn’t have it “now”, it’s had it for a while. Maybe a better word is “inaccurate”? Saying it’s new is a lie.
- Sasquatch@lemmy.mlEnglish12 days
It does have it now I just checked. It may have also had it then, but I can’t confirm that. From your testimony, it seems like Kagi both has this toggle now, and had this toggle then
- potustheplant@feddit.nlEnglish12 days
Your reading comprehension skills are not that great, got it. Thanks for letting everyone know.
Steve@communick.newsEnglish
13 daysNo, they don’t have it now.
Though they may again by the time your read this. Steve@communick.newsEnglish
12 daysIn effect, yes.
It’s a joke; Made by your use of a different meaning of “now” than OP used in the title. I was pointing out that your use of “now” is an instantaneous moment, of which there are really countless numbers, between your typing the letters “n” and “w”, if counted in Plank time. And with such a definition, it’s impossible to know if the feature exists at any given “now”, since we can’t possibly agree on or even accurately choose one. So yes, Schrödinger’s Feature now applies.
TrickDacy@lemmy.worldEnglish
13 daysI was gonna say I thought I remembered seeing that when I used kagi. Is enabling it buried in a settings menu? I don’t recall
- Ludicrous0251@piefed.zipEnglish13 days
Kagi calls them lenses, and there’s a bunch. You can change the default by selecting the current one (in my case below, “Small Web”)

- takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish13 days
This is great. This was one of things that I disliked about Lemmy, as being federated makes it harder to use external search engines.
I think that might be the final thing to make me switch from DDG to Kagi.
- 12 days
If Kagi were Free (as im Free Beer), Libre (as in Free Speech/Freedom) and Open Source, it were perfect.
But not only it’s not open source, but also it’s paid. I ain’t using nothing that isn’t FLOSS.
skaffi@infosec.pubEnglish
11 daysAt this point, I don’t see why that is any worse than using the services of any US-based Big Tech companies. They have the same kind of anti-privacy business model, their local political regimes have both gone off the rails, and law enforcement and intelligence agencies can legally or extra-judicially snoop through collected data without the user ever knowing.
Some of the services provided by Yandex are, quality-wise, decent enough. I personally tend to find their translation service to be as good or better, as compared to similar services, such as Google Translate or DeepL, so it’s usually my API of choice through Mohzi.
- ProfessorGlorps@lemmy.zipEnglish11 days
For me its not about the quality provided but about not supporting a company located in a questionable country. To me that includes both the US and Russia.
TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.worldEnglish
13 daysFor only 300 searches, that’s 10 searches a day. I do probably 50 to 100 searches per day.
So, it’s really $10 a month.
I might pay $5 a month for unlimited but I’m not sure about that. Because, you know they’ll raise the price if they get successful enough. And, then it’s just a constant march to more enshittification.
- boudica@lemmy.worldEnglish13 days
They offer a genuinely good product and I think it’s important to support companies that sell a good product rather than their customers’ info.
I paid $5 for a couple of years but eventually stopped because I kept running out of searches after a few weeks. $10 a month for a search engine is excessive but 300 searches a month is too limiting.
- 13 days
I pay per search using their APi and my SearXNG instance, it’s like ¢0.03 per search which I capped to $5 a month, we’re currently on the 23rd of October and I owe them a whopping $2.03, I usually don’t hit that $5 limit.
I only wish they weren’t an American company.
- IlCaviale@lemmy.worldEnglish13 days
So let me get this straight. Not only it’s closed source and SaaS but you guys are paying for your data to be stored on US based servers that are vulnerable to the patriot act? You’re paying for that privilege?
- 13 days
I can’t say if the servers themselves reside on US soil but the companies office certainly do, while I admit I was hesitant to give them my money I got tired of being rate limited by Bing/DDG/Startpage on my SearXNG instance, even though I don’t make many requests they do not like aggregator engines, and I sure as hell didn’t want want my server touching Google servers regularly.
Settled with the least worst option available I’d say.
- 13 days
Yeah, and that one is FLOSS (Free [as in Free Beer], Libre (as in Free Speech/Freedom] and Open Source Software). So SearXNG >>>>> Kagi.
TragicNotCute@lemmy.worldEnglish
12 daysNo.
I tested a lot of different search engines when I was leaving Google and Kagi was the best by quite a bit. The customization features easily push it over the edge.
- Ludicrous0251@piefed.zipEnglish12 days
Except it still relies on closed source indexes to do anything useful, and they are actively trying to block scrapers.
InternetCitizen2@lemmy.worldEnglish
13 daysOthers are saying its not new, but it is to me. Thank you for sharing OP!
InternetCitizen2@lemmy.worldEnglish
13 daysWhich is why I commented in affirmation to be more wholesome and encourage more people to post about what new, to them, things they discover.
TropicalDingdong@lemmy.worldEnglish
13 daysThat’s fucking awesome but the ranking is highly questionable.
I searched myself and a 4 upvote comment was the top thing.
- 13 days
I would have expected plenty of results from lemmynsfw given your username.
BeigeAgenda@lemmy.caEnglish
13 daysThat’s because 4 upvotes here is like 4k upvotes on that other site.
- AlteredEgo@lemmy.mlEnglish13 days
Think of all the web services who still pays money to USA or Israel. If you want to moralize, at least don’t use a double standard of morality for the people you hate vs the people you venerate.
- boonhet@sopuli.xyzEnglish13 days
The Russia thing is that they pay Yandex to use their results in addition to the other engines they use.
- loppwn@sh.itjust.worksEnglish12 days
i also use yandex if i need to find something google doesnt find. Had good results with some pirated jav. I have no good thoughts about russia but i like to find stuff on search-engines.
- USSEthernet@piefed.socialEnglish13 days
I was self hosting searxng for a long time then after one of the updates I stopped getting results. A friend of mine told me about degoog so I switched and so far I like it. It has a lot of plugins and addons. I basically have it looking or feeling like Google used to. I was also able to incorporate my ollama instance for LLM summaries if I add a question mark in my searches.
- boudica@lemmy.worldEnglish13 days
How did you integrate ollama with it? That sounds like an interesting setup.
Drunk & Root@sh.itjust.worksEnglish
12 daysThat sounds nice i tried degood when it was first out. Seems like its gotten a lot more support now.
