Targetting these is genuinely a viable wartime strategy as Russia projects it’s influence heavy through propaganda and other digital initiatives in other nations.
Yandex is just web crawlers like the ones Google and many other companies have. Perhaps that server housed their bot farm shit too but who knows. The drop in Yandex crawling is proven with data, but the rest of this is just speculation and assumptions based on perception. It’s anecdotal.

Yeah this is largely disinformation: Yandex bot traffic drop isn’t Russian disinfo collapse | Cybernews
- 4 days
Yandex is basically Russian Google. They do everything Google does I’m pretty sure (except phones. They did try to make phones though), including but not limited to AI, web crawling, the cloud, delivery, smart home, and even payments
It’s stupid because it blinds people to the fact that Russians are working class just like we are, and just like Ukrainians are. Lumping them altogether with their shitty leadership and governments is not ideal.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike Russia aside from the nationalist propaganda, thank you.

The people’s ableism! Wanna tell us to kill ourselves more, comrade?
rustyfish@piefed.worldEnglish
4 daysI love the fact this happened and I also love the fact how Ukraine is using my yearly donations in its fight against the russian regime ❤️
- 4 days
The bot traffic in question is indexing crawlers. Yandex is a search engine (among other things), there is nothing suggesting they’re hosting LLMs to run bot accounts

I’m not sure if this is a “It’s called X guys” comment or a “That pile of dogshit is still online?” comment. And my upvote/downvote depends on that
I’m waiting for someone to say hexbear is down or something. (My instance is defederated from them and grad, so I wouldn’t know).
Lets see if we can bait some of the .ml heavyweights out. I’ll start:
The PRC is a hypercapitalist colonial/imperialist superpower masquerading as communism.
There. Start the timer.

the server is in france so it would probably be a major incident if big Z attacked that

i’m in the us and have actually met other .ml users in person 😂
the xenophobic paranoia about us will never stop being hilarious tho
AntiOutsideAktion@lemmy.mlEnglish
4 daysSo you’re admitting you use ‘bot’ as a method of dehumanization instead of literally describing a process on a server.
e: and then later you think you can get away with incredulity at being called racist?
Are you timing your diarrhea cramps or something?
You’re choosing to censor yourself from the opinions of leftists.
“the opinions of leftists”
I get plenty of those, as I am one and interact among the rational segment of leftism. What I don’t waste my time on is fake-leftist shill accounts peddling disinformation on behalf of the imperial fascist financial oligarchy that is the Russian Federation.
So nice try trying to monopolize leftism, but it’s not working. Go peddle your caricature elsewhere.
- Dr_Vindaloo@lemmy.mlEnglish4 days
Give me one single example from history when your strain of “rational leftism” has ever accomplished anything.
Maybe if your sources are all 10+ years old, that might seem like a justifiable position
I was about to say “you’ve never heard ‘superpower’ used in a geopolitical context?” and then I noticed your username and suddenly the silent “/s” came through.
Carry on, good sir!

Yes everyone having a different political opinion is a bot. If you ask me, that is not a civil comment. You’re maligning and dehumanizing anyone disagreeing with you.
- 2 days
You act like a botist, you’re gonna be called a botist.
Human rights for bots now!
- Scratch@sh.itjust.worksEnglish6 days
WanderWisely originally posted it and GFL thought it was good enough to repost. What’s the issue here?
- atomicbocks@sh.itjust.worksEnglish6 days
Personally the issue I have is that this is what crossposting is for. Posting it over and over just takes up more space on servers that are largely paid for by donations.
- 5 days
Crossposting unfortunately doesn’t always work (many communities restrict it for example), and many clients still don’t support it properly
- atomicbocks@sh.itjust.worksEnglish5 days
I’m not sure why a community would do that, like are there any that restrict voting? It’s a fundamental part of the platform.
If we waited until everybody was ready for every feature we would never get any features. I’m really not sure that “third party apps aren’t finished yet” is an argument against using a feature of the platform.
- 5 days
I’ve seen multiple communities that enforced the no crosspost rule.
And by “apps not supporting it well” I don’t just mean visually but the fact that there’s no cross-post option/button. If someone uses such a client, they’re simply unable to use the feature even if they want to.
HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.worldEnglish
5 daysThen why didn’t you start with that much more reasonable goal-post?
- atomicbocks@sh.itjust.worksEnglish5 days
Huh? I think you need to pay better attention to user names.

Watch out .ml aren’t known to have humour! (Or being historically accurate, but that’s another story).
So you moved from reddit to a leftist created space, find it too leftist, and want to force out the original inhabitants of the space?
Libs gonna colonize, lol
You can always just go back to reddit and never have to worry about talking to another leftist again.

Tell them? They are the ones that just got bombed. They pretty much knew before just about anyone else.

These should have been targeted every day for the last 10years, good job Ukraine

i guess that’s the plan going forward. also a good advert for self-hosting because a lot of data is going to get lost

Search the news for yandex strikes in russia. Bot traffic was 0.4% of previous levels from one article I read.

Found a source: https://www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/reform-figures-see-social-media-engagement-drop-after-strikes-on-russia-data-centres-410517/

You linked to a fedi discussion of a news article. Saving everyone time, the evidence presented is:
Take Richard Tice for example. Below are three posts on X from the Reform deputy leader to his almost 400,000 followers on Monday, 11 October. At the time of writing, none of the posts had hit triple figures for reposts or comments, with one not even reaching 10,000 views.
{…}
Before the Ukrainian strikes on the Russia data centres, Tice’s posts got considerably more engagement, consistently hitting triple figures for comments and reposts, whilst racking up hundreds of thousands of views.
None of us would have noticed because none of us use Xitter.

This is about Yandex’s bots, these are web crawlers. This has nothing to do with bots on X.

October 11th, 5:08 AM (GMT+2) As a result of the UAV attack, the infrastructure of Yandex’s data center in Vladimir was damaged. The data center’s operation has been completely suspended. There are no casualties; the relevant services are already on site and dealing with the consequences.

You don’t actually believe that, if you thought any instance had a lot of unlabeled bots, you’d just report them.
