5 daysLouder for the cheap seats. Monopolies don’t benefit consumers, artists, production crews, actors, or anyone who isn’t a shareholder. This is a one-way ticket to turning your streaming platform into nothing but AI Slop and reruns from a better time.

5 daysMonopolies can benefit the consumer, at least in the short term. When Netflix was the streaming monopoly, it had more popular content at a much lower price. Competition between streaming platforms has resulted in better deals for studios selling streaming rights to their content, but a much worse deal for the end consumers.
Similar deal with Audible, their monopoly on audiobook sales leads to really good deals for their users, at the cost of terrible payouts and cut percentages for authors and publishers.
To be clear I’m not saying that monopolies are good, but saying they never benefit consumers isn’t quite accurate either. As a storefront you can use high user counts to force better deals, which helps retain users and block out competition.

If everything’s on one platform, how much does that platform cost?
And if everything is one one platform, how robust is it against censorship?
“everything” will be on one platform, but you’ll only have half the amount of stuff to watch and it’ll be more expensive.
Before Disney bought 20th Century Fox they released ~15-20 movies per year, since the acquisition it’s down to 3-6 per year.

It has become apparent that greater control over production and distribution gives greater editorial power over the content. It appears that the owners of the merged company intend to use that editorial power to shape public opinion.

Monopolies are bad for the consumer but I’m stunned at how few people have mentioned that a huge media conglomerate with news (CNN) and movie studios all being owned by fascist bootlickers is goddamn terrifying.

Doesn’t that mean we can have all shows and movies on one platform? Isn’t that a good thing?
kind of like how Disney+ and Hulu just became one bill when Disney took over the rest of hulu. Except of course, it didn’t.
