I think the comment about AI is not in good faith.
It isn’t users saying every “AI assisted” project is vibe coded slop.
It is just as often or more that developers and “developers” lying about AI assistance when they are just vibe coding or “AI assisting” and barely checking over the code. There are tons if those on Fdroid android apps too.
The projects that are actually only AI assisted don’t get that many complaints on most communities I see. It is the slop that people push as legitimate that gets people riled up.

How do you go about finding out which one of the two possibilities is true?
- JustEnoughDucks@slrpnk.netEnglish1 day
Look at the code and commit history and/or talk to the developer.
If the developer only commits in giant blocks of 1-2 days and mostly in a few hours and changes thousands of lines of code in that time, the chances of it not being vibe coded and actually being checked are extremely slim, outside of a complete project refactor. It used to be that LLMs would just do massive single commits, but now they do a thousand tiny commits on the same day using a ton of barely human-readable jargon (for less experienced devs) in the git commits.
If the project was started past 2025 and the initial commit(s) on the first day were massive, that also points (less strongly) towards vibe coding.
If the Dev can’t explain what his code does without having an LLM write the response (this is getting to be harder to spot because LLMs are good at language patterns), that also generally also means that it was vibe coded.
If the dev’s commit history only includes documentation, issues, or very very small things until 2025-2026 and combined with one of the above, it is usually vibe coded.
If the dev has been writing issues or commits jn AI tool repos, that is another indicator.
The vibe coding identifying sites online are complete garbage with mostly false positives. For example, if I run it on my old github repos from before LLM coding existed, it says that it is very likely vibe coded because I comment a ton because my memory isn’t great and I am an electronics guy with very bad coding git management so my git commit history is like one or two commits per day when I am working on something, but I try to bullet list all of my changes in a readable way for people not familiar with the code (like myself in 1 year lol)

That youtube self host is exactly what I have been looking for. I want to get a few creators content on the tv without the youtube app.
If it can manage sponsorblock 🫣
- ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish2 days
YTZero, you mean? It looks like the maintainer is stepping away because of the potential legal jeopardy of dealing with Youtube, so it’s going unmaintained. Which is a damn shame, I’ve used it for a couple months now and love it. I might have to maintain my own fork.
- Mad_Punda@feddit.orgEnglish2 days
I wonder how those compare to invidious…? It’s the same goal, right? Maybe invidious is more meant to be publicly hosted?
- 2 days
I’ve lost all motivation to continue any sort of self-hosting. AI/LLM has crept into every corner of the internet. It’s killed the community vibe I once grew up with. There’s a certain lifelessness with these projects and the internet as a whole that’s hard to describe but it’s just not fun anymore.
I’m in the progress of changing my hobby to be more offline. Writing my own code for my own purpose and entertainment. I’ll still host my code on Codeberg. Codeberg, this Lemmy account and that one
bashfocused discord server will be my entire online presence going forward. Whatever happens, happens and I won’t feel a loss about losing access to any of those things.Capitalism and the forces that promote or enable capitalism just exploits everything until there is no life, fun or joy left…

It’s interesting I have the exact opposite perspective with AI in regards to selfhosting.
The customizability is now endless for me, I can do anything, customize anything, problems that are typically 1-2 hours are fixed in <5 minutes.
Don’t want to fiddle w/ a GUI? Shoot off a message and it’s done.

Further down this comment chain I explain why I feel AI is causing so many issues.
The blog post linked but the user lepire does an even better job explaining how AI destroys online communities.
Personal convenience should not come at such a deep and destructive cost.
I’ve been on the internet since 1998 and I’ve watched slowly as big money and bigger tech companies slowly destroy everything that made the internet inclusive and weird. I’m sure people who have had access to the Internet for longer than myself would have even more to say about the current state of the internet.
- frongt@lemmy.zipEnglish2 days
What has that got to do with it? I’m still going to run stuff on my own hardware regardless of what AI companies are doing.

It’s completely overwhelming how many new projects there are that are full of AI/LLM code and documentation. AI has also crept into existing projects, including those that deal with security or encryption. It’s even in Linux now. This is all incredibly troubling from an outside perspective.
It’s dangerous to live on top of so many layers of abstraction. If we don’t understand our tools and machinery, they will not be useful to us when they eventually break. And all things eventually break. Just because it exists and is available, does not mean it is good, acceptable or safe to use.
It’s very saddening that the ethical issues about the use of AI is constantly being pushed to the side of every conversation. It’s frustrating to deal with people who are Pro-AI that are consistently rude and condescending. It’s frustrating for Pro-AI people to consistently ignore a person’s question to aggressively push more AI products on other people. This behaviour has killed any sense or feeling of community.
This technology didn’t always exist. This technology doesn’t need to have such complete control over our future. It is completely acceptable for people to seek AI free alternatives and not be treat like they are troublesome idiots.
All the rage and insecurities in the world won’t erase people’s desire to feel community and express their humanity. It’s a shame that the few who are angry and insecure are also incredibly fucking loud.

Adding to replies below I think this is a pretty good articulation of the problem from someone involved with the Bevy project

It’s not what the API companies are doing. The self-hosting community/open source as a whole has been flooded with vibe coded slop projects

I feel you here, it’s gotten really bad lately for me as well. AI has really ruined things for me. As well as everything being so generally expensive it’s just no longer fun. :(

I’ve switched from Pinchflat to Pinchflat NGX (even though I hate the new theme, bling bling…), now I just need someone to take over YTZero as well, because that was my main replacement for Invidious/Piped that kept breaking, and Pinchflat was only a backup solution for me…

doesn’t matter if something is vibe coded or ai assisted, no AI full stop.

Resisting something that is inevitable is foolish but its not even really “AI” its more Human Assisted Intelligence its programed and learned by human input not its own. Artificial intelligence, like the real Artificial Intelligence will be crazy and is approaching.
In my opinion you we need to embrace it enough to help us do things quicker as a society for good things, medical research or make things quicker and easier for us to move forward with something.
Not use it to take over every human action possible but to assist us in this world. Humans have always made things to be more convenient for eg a kitchen aid could you imaging people back then say “nope hand mixing is better its more authentic” no its just quicker and allows us more time for other things to focus on.
I dont want it to take over but damned if im not gonna utilise it to help me with things I even plan on getting my own offline model soon to help me with basic things for undertsanding new projects etc… if you have a more positive outlook of it instead of resisting every part of it you will see how brilliant us humans actually are in creating such things. My caveat is that we must maintain control of real AI.
