It would be so easy for me to laugh this off and say, “duh just don’t go to the third world country that is the USA,” but anything they do will spread to other parts of the world.
Maybe wipe an old phone and just have signal to communicate with family until I cross the border? I wouldn’t even mind paying a few bucks to make a new signal account without a phone number.

As a us citiczen I’m more and more looking at my phone as a hostile device. I have Graphene on one phone and an iPhone, but with how things are going these days who knows how secure these devices really are. Apple iOS is a black box. Android is not much better, and they’re now faster than laptops and most desktops. They can be running and recording and reporting anything and still sip battery life. I’ve since deleted social media apps outside of lemmy and HN. I use my little e-reader more than my phone. All my personal stuff is in encrypted cloud that is not iCloud, I don’t use biometrics to unlock it. But I still don’t trust it. I’m beginning to think carrying it in a foil bag until I need it is a good idea.

I agree, it’s not a tool, it’s a compromised and dangerous device and I have to carry it with me carefully. I have always turned off my location from time to time and carefully managed permissions, but nowadays here’s what I do:
- Graphene
- no biometric login
- no stale data on the device. If I won’t need it while I am mobile, does it need to be on my phone?
- location off, BT off, and airplane mode when going into grocery stores or any surveillance a happy retailer.
- factory wipe or alternate phone before traveling internationally, especially to countries with questionable rule of law, including my own
- minimal non-FOSS apps (getting less every time I redo the phone)
- any app that has a usable web portal or can be accessed on desktop only (Facebook, reddit) does not get installed.
- no pairing with cars or other BT devices that are known to be sketchy.
If I controlled the software on a deeper level, I would set it up to have a toggle where it will only connect to the cell network every 30-60 minutes. There is little in my life that is more important than a half hour response time, so why am I continuously broadcasting my triangulated location? I would have that toggle turned on 90% of the time.

Interestingly, iOS 27 has a new “2 phones can share 1 number and you can swap between them” which didn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

But The Apple documentation (https://support.apple.com/en-us/127274) mentions that your iCloud gets synced between both devices, so now I’m confused what the purpose of this is

Remember to turn off all biometrics for unlocking your phone, if not now, then at least when traveling internationally. They can scan your face or your fingerprint without a warrant. But they can’t compel you to provide potentially incriminating information including passwords, codes and patterns. Self-destruct codes will likely get you arrested for obstruction of justice and destruction of evidence though, so use those at your own risk. I wouldn’t recommend it.
Best to never keep anything you wouldn’t want a cop or fed seeing anywhere on your device. If you have any materials that you wish to keep private, store them elsewhere as much as possible. Either never store them on your device or regularly back them up somewhere secure and wipe your device clean. Make sure all remote access to those materials are behind secure encrypted password protected connections.
Remember, know the law so that you may follow it to its letter and no further. If you must comply, comply. If you can, don’t comply. Know your rights and practice them. Never volunteer information to law enforcement even if you’re innocent. You don’t know what they know, what they are wanting to hear, what can be misunderstood, confused or contorted to put you into trouble. Every day is shut the fuck up Friday. Nobody will protect you but you.

Refusing to unlock your properly secured device for them will result in its confiscation and perhaps your detention.
Password managers and browser history are sticking points. You could not use your device for anything, but one of your services might rat you out.
You kinda need a travel phone.
My pin is eleven digits, a number I’ll never forget, and I enter it every time. No face ID for me.
Also, don’t call the cops unless getting arrested is better than whatever is happening. Because, they’ll use any excuse to arrest you no matter how innocent you think you are.

The second circuit used the right argument but somehow came to the wrong conclusion. The 4th carves out no special exemption, meaning you need a warrant.

Or don’t travel with a phone at all. Take a digital camera and use that for pictures.
Anything else, just buy a used phone at your destination and load all your accounts on that, then delete and reset your phone and sell it before you leave

They’ll search that too! Take an analog camera instead. At least that way you get the film developed for free ;).
This is nothing new. I don’t agree with it but people are acting like this was rolled out yesterday. Unless we can reverse the supreme court ruling on it, nothing will prevent them from searching phones at airports or within 100 of borders.
