Kind of ruins it for me that sassafras was banned in the 1960s for its carcinogenic properties and now all root beer is made from artificial sassafras. I stick with ginger beer myself.

interestingly only the bark and its oil are banned. you can still buy the leaves as gumbo file since they don’t have the oil in them. they don’t taste like root beer though

I usually get Fever-Tree ginger beer, which lists ginger root in the ingredients with no artificial flavorings. That being said, I wouldn’t put it past any company to lie about ingredients after learning about, for example, studies showing products claiming to have avacado oil actually contain other types oils.

IBC in the original glass bottles with the non twist caps were my jam before the turn off the century. Only one deli in the area sold it and we could pretend it was a beer.
I’m sure if I tried it today it would be mid at best, but probably better than Barqs or MUG.

Barq’s is easily the best. IBC is the worst it is just sugar water with barely any flavor.

Frankly, MUG, IBC, and Barq’s are all just a blur of unflavorful to me. Barq’s just hides it behind a shitload of carbonation.
