The American Copyright Protection Act aims to force ISPs, DNS resolvers, and VPNs to cut off access to foreign piracy sites

7 daysDear Government. Quit trying to turn the Internet into 1980s cable TV. There’s a lot of us out here using it for its original purpose instead shopping and watching Netflix.

So employees that use a company VPN to access company files between offices are now breaking the law?
What about personal vpns that people setup to access their home devices, like a smart home setup or home security camera? Illegal as well?

No, specific IPs of AI companies are clear for doing this.
Incoming IP spoofs of OpenAI in 3, 2, 1…

Ya… I’m hosting an AI company from my $10k seed… It uhhhh focuses a lot on porn and tv.

Remember when piracy was shrinking and Netflix was cheap and had a good deal of content?
Ah well, if only we can figure out what changed.
I guess we’ll instead try prohibiting VPNs, when something is in demand… prohibiting it always works great with zero unintended consequences.

When you only needed Netflix. Not Netflix, Hulu, Disney, HBO, Paramount, peacock, starz, apple, Amazon prime… I mean, I think most of us are fine paying for content. But, streaming has become at least as expensive as cable used to be.

Other P2P networks too.
Long live to Soulseek, eMule/ed2k, IPFS, Iroh, Retroshare, Tox and the like.
- Jiggle_Physics@quokk.auEnglish8 days
It’s almost as if the piracy is not actually why, or not the primary reason, they want to take total control of the internet
Em Adespoton@lemmy.caEnglish8 daysNothing like passing legislation to force a collection of international communications protocols to ban sites the state doesn’t like….

7 daysStep 1: rent a $5 VPS anywhere outside of us government control.
Step 2: set up a multi-hop tunnel through said VPS using glutun and wireguard.
You are now immune to this bullshit.
Lmao

Looks at the 99% who can’t afford a VPS
You’re forgetting the most important thing

avg comes with one. pita, sometimes it turns it on when i don’t want to use it. I used to mess around with it because I got avg because my phone kept getting hacked and I was like this thing comes with a vpn!!! whaaaaaaat but tbh I have no use for t so I don’t even use it.
ngl though, if i went out of the country and needed to access paypal instead of using zelle, id use it, other than that, it’s annoying when i do a virus scan and it gets turned on after.

They can be found for less than $20 a month. They’re on par with 1-2 streaming services you can drop.
- 7 days
For some people that really need that, even less than one dollar is too much. $20 is basically matter of life or death.
- sunbeam60@feddit.ukEnglish7 days
I know, a VPS is nothing and running wireguard in a docker container takes 3 minutes.
- FE80@lemmy.worldEnglish7 days
You can build a psuedo VPN with as little as ssh + squid on a VPS. Tunnel your web traffic over ssh to a proxy on the VPS.
