• It’s funny, because I remember when I learned about trans people. My mother was watching some episode of Dr Phil, where the person on the show was a trans man and the episode revolved around Phil essentially insulting him and telling him hebwas just a confused woman… But in my egg brain I just thought “wait… You can DO that? I can just be a girl???”

  • The implicit admission that “out of sight, out of mind” is the first line of defence of thought control they’re desperately trying to maintain is too funny.

    • The only way to maintain their belief system is isolating themselves from anyone different. That’s why so many right wing extremists homeschool their children.

  • Yup, just like DARE… that taught a lot of kids about drugs and being an informant for cops

  • All the us Americans talking about some politician again, guess it’s time for me to find out who they are.

    —

So, according to the political positions listed on his Wikipedia, he’s a guy who’s mostly against anti-trans legislation and who generally says that we should listen to what medical professionals have to say. THIS is what all the republican fearmongering is about? A guy who sometimes is not in support of their repressive policies?? Is this what left-wing means in Texas???

  • There where multiple ongoing anti-drug campaign when i was a teen.

Many of them framed facts into scare campaigns. The issue was if i lined them all up it became obvious that they could not all tell the truth.

I was vey naive and it seemed very obvious to not consume something that would kill me. I was never going to touch drugs, why would anyone? Why do we need a police officers visiting my class to tell us the most obvious things in the world.

At some point i just cracked from the confusion and started doing my own research on the topic.

As a results i became hugely interested in the matter and they remain one of my special intrest today. Mild altering substances are so fascinating and powerful, and we barely understand them.

    Responsible disclaimer:

    • Drugs have real risks and can be very dangerous, addiction is no joke.

    • While interested i did wait till i was over 18 to start experimenting, with what i know now i recommend waiting till at least 24. Contrary to what laws say an 18yo is not an adult.

    • I knew my limits and remained careful while continuing to apply a scientific rigor trough it all. And in the end i stopped using them at all.

    • There where multiple ongoing anti-drug campaign when i was a teen.

Many of them framed facts into scare campaigns.

Yeah, “facts”. When I was in high school they had cops visit and tell us how another cop “just touched a guy that took fentanyl” and had to have an emergency dose of Narcan (opiate reverser) because he was “poisoned”. No being needle stuck, bit, etc, just the “residue” on the clothing/skin of the person that took it. No wonder people don’t trust cops.

Per [Is fentanyl dangerous to touch? Experts say no – here’s why] -(https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fentanyl-contact-overdose-risks-what-to-know/)

Can you overdose by touching fentanyl?

Experts told CBS News that touching fentanyl powder will not cause an overdose. In powder form, the way it’s almost always found in the illicit drug supply, the drug cannot absorb through the skin, said Ryan Marino, a medical toxicologist, emergency physician and addiction medicine specialist at the Cleveland Medical Center. Just being near the substance also won’t cause an overdose.

“Fentanyl as a dry powder is not going to cross through your skin. It’s the same reason you can touch sugar without your blood sugar going up,” said Marino. “Solids don’t cross through your skin.”

    • Contrary to what laws say an 18yo is not an adult.

yeah and a large part of the reason for this is that we don’t let the people make experiences before that age. if we shift the age of “you’re now an adult” to 24, people won’t be adult by that time either.

      • Its actually about biological maturity. Your brain is literaly not complete before that.

I can back this up with scientific sources:

        https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3621648/

        https://sites.duke.edu/apep/module-3-alcohol-cell-suicide-and-the-adolescent-brain/science-content/brain-maturation-is-complete-at-about-24-years-of-age/

“the brain rewires itself from the onset of puberty up until 24 years old, especially in the prefrontal cortex.”

“It is well established that the brain undergoes a “rewiring” process that is not complete until approximately 25 years of age. This discovery has enhanced our basic understanding regarding adolescent brain maturation and it has provided support for behaviors experienced in late adolescence and early adulthood. Several investigators consider the age span 10–24 years as adolescence”

Speaking from personal experience, i actually felt this. Its similar to the memory of suddenly “waking up to a compleye theory of mind” at around 5yo which many people have. Like the parts of my brain that were otherwise occupied in the background becoming fully accessible to me.

There might be some truth to what you say if you look at evolution. Cause it does seem like the phase maturity keeps getting longer, but its not something an insividual family can fight within a few generations.

        • i don’t get what this has to do with anything. your bone marrow doesn’t stop producing new blood cells for 90 years. does that mean that you can’t use your body before you’re 90? because your bone marrow is still not done producing all these red blood cells …

    • Literally came intthe classroom and told us the right way to do drugs.

      Literally.

This was a campaign to get certain folks on drugs.

  • Ah yes the old " constantly talking about them" argument, this time the shoe is on the other foot though.

  • They tried to show the clip where he says “God is nonbinary” as a point against him, but I only imagine kids from religious families going “wait that makes sense to me.”

    • Given that our only solid eyewitness account of God is ‘burning shrub’, yeah. I mean, did Moses check to see if the shrub had seed pods???

His pfp got changed to Jupiter’s mugshot after the Catholic church ate Rome.

      • Moses also saw the butt! Besides the obvious fact that it was a perfect butt, and also a good butt, Moses said nothing illuminating with regards to the masculinity or femininity of the aforementioned observed posterior.

    • That commercial included several things which are pretty much just in the text. I learned them in bible class as a child, read them myself as a teen, and discussed them with a professor to boot.

They’re entirely banking on Christians who don’t know much about the bible, which tbf is most of them. Sort of like how a lot of leftists don’t read theory.

      • Sort of, although leftist theory, by virtue of having a close relationship to the truth, can converge with other forms of thinking. On the other hand, in order to be Christian specifically, you pretty much need to read the Bible or have someone who’s read it tell you what it says.

    • My evangelical parents (and church) taught me this 30 years ago. It wasn’t a big deal then. How odd.

    • Yes, the funniest part of this whole media campaign is that it’s going to make “holy Trinity” sermons super awkward for years to come.

    • Whinging… That’s the perfect way to describe it. Like that one kid in grade school that nobody liked that was insistent on telling on everyone.

      I’m keeping that, thanks.

      • I first noticed american republicans pushing transphobic rhetoric around ten ish years ago or so. I want to be informed on issues that may arise during an election, so I had to research trans issues. All this was a direct result of that hateful rhetoric.

I learned a lot about gender, and trans people, and it prompted me to consider my own gender which I really hadn’t done before. It took time after that to accept myself as trans, and even longer to be ready to do anything about it.

If politicians had just left trans people alone I doubt I would have figured myself out by now.

        • 1 day

You’re an intelligent and responsible person. And got the karma for that :)

  • Election day anytime of year needs to be a “trans day of visibility” as we all go and vote.

        • It’s very rare and done when considered medically necessary. Note that all these bans specifically have exceptions for cis people (cis teenage girls can get a boob job, just not trans), as well as for involuntary mutilation of intersex children, and involuntary circumcision. They’ve never been about protecting children. They’re about hurting trans kids specifically when they aren’t in any danger in the first place.

        • Gender affirming surgery isnt uncommon at all in minors, but it is usually for straight children: breast reduction/augmentation, and much much more rarely genital and cosmetic surgeries, and even all of those aren’t for transgender children.

Also here’s a source, not like you need one as it’s fairly common knowledge and easy to find, but maybe someone reading is looking for one. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2808707

To your point though, yes, it’s a boogyman.

    • I think it was that he thought it should be fair and not managed by the state, but rather at the community level.

I as a trans adult also think it should be fair, a certain amount of time on hormones/androgen blockers for example, but what that means to him IDK.

      edited for clarity

      • You think small communities in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, etc should be in charge of legislating trans rights, lol?

        • I think that it’s more so that athletics associations like the NCAA or whatever their state-wide high school athletics associations that would be legislating it. And school boards. Granted it’s not great and throws trans kids from conservative communities under the bus too because those school boards can be crazy. It’s better than prohibition from the state level of government though

        • That was what he said. No I don’t think it should be legislated, just fair which is what I was referring to.

            • Laws don’t magically make anything fair. In fact they most often do the opposite.

                • My point is, it’s not legislation or lack thereof that arbitrates fairness. There can be fairness outside of the law, and there can be fairness under the law. The law is not a sacred thing, it’s just the opinion of a few privileged assholes. And it happens to be their opinion that they ought to be allowed to lock you up or kill you if you decide to disregard their opinions.

                • Why does it need to be law?

The whole point is it shouldn’t be regulated by a cm government, but by the individual sports association.

How does government make if fair?
