10 daysI have no idea how Americans can stand being represented like this. It’s one long continuous series of insults heaped upon injury.
- mushroommunk@lemmy.todayEnglish10 days
Many of us can’t and have been working hard to try and change it. Unfortunately, we didn’t spend our money on enough guns and ammo to nuke a country and aren’t backed by more wealth than the gdp of some nations.

10 daysI dare say France has - once again - recently demonstrated that you don’t necessarily need either of those things.
- mushroommunk@lemmy.todayEnglish10 days
And once again, comparing France to America is a dumb take ignoring major differences in basically everything about the countries.
xxce2AAb@feddit.dkEnglish
10 daysYou know what? I agree. There really is no point in comparing the two.
- 10 days
Right. Compare something more obvious so people can stop making the same dumb comparison.
France vs Texas
Metric France Texas Comparison Total Area ~551,500 km² ~695,662 km² Texas is 26% larger Population ~68.5 million ~31.7 million France has 2.2× more people Population Density ~124 people/km² ~45 people/km² France is 2.8× denser - runner_g@piefed.blahaj.zoneEnglish9 days
I was looking it up a couple days ago - in France if you lived in the furthest large city from Paris, Nice, it would take you 8.5 hours by car or 6 hours by public transit to get to Paris. You could get off work at 4p on Friday, swing by home and be to Paris by midnight, protest for a day and half, and then be home in time for dinner on Sunday. It’ll cost $100-200 USD each way, and you can buy it as a single ticket.
No let’s look at Texas - The capital is Austin, which is more central North/South, and similarly offset east/west, aka it’s slightly closer to the center of the landmass vs Paris. If you live in the furthest away large city, Amarillo, it is 8 hours by car or 19 hours by public transit. A city bus to the transit station, then 3 different city to city buses to get to Austin. The cost is $200-250 each way. By the time you get to Austin, you need to call your boss and let them know you won’t be in on Monday, and that’s if you turn around and leave immediately.
America is Fucked.

Or, you know, the fact that France is smaller, has less people, more social safety nets, and doesn’t have a militarized trigger-happy police force.
- Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
Don’t forget the US has the nasty combination of a sizeable demographic of right-wing gun owners who’d love an excuse to use them, alongside news media who’d frame the protesters as an evil force that’s burning down entire cities.
- Victor@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
It’s just unfortunate that most likely most of those in the US who do have guns are also Trump supporters, or at least I imagine that to be true.
- 9 days
France is not the US. The US frequently kills protestors, even peaceful ones, and has literally bombed entire city blocks in the past. That’s not to mention the vast legal, demographic, and geographic differences.
The US government is depraved. It is not comparable to France.

That’s basically how we are where we are.

When someone posts Daily Mail, it’s worth reminding that regardless of the truth of the article, the source is absolute shit. They breathlessly report every little thing like it’s the end of the world, and ignore the real issues. It’s a distraction.
Enjoy it if you want, but i’m going to protest its posting every time I see it.

Not only that, but this is basically just an article laughing about sexual harassment.
- blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish9 days
“Flirty” is an inaccurate way to describe what and how he spoke about her. It was sexual harassment, live on stage.
But of course the Daily Mail would think that’s how you flirt with people.
- 9 days
“But she’s not on our team, so it’s fine to be okay with sexual harassment and misogyny! In fact, we’ll participate in it, too!” - The Daily Mail & many Lemmy users in the comments
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like her, but that’s because of her views. I’m never okay with misogyny and sexual harassment.
- blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish9 days
Yeah, I don’t like her for her behaviour, personality, or attitude, nor do I find her visually coherent with all the plastic surgery. And yet none of this are relevant to the actual problems here: Trump sexually harassing her live on-stage to cheers from his audience, and the Daily Mail calling it “flirty”. There’s no reason to make this about Nicki Minaj when she’s not the problem here.
Like, what’s the goal on focusing on how unattractive you may find her? To show that you disagree with Trump? The implication of that is that the sexual harassment should have been better targeted not that it should not have happened, been cheered over, or been reported as “flirty”.

Some of these comments are bordering just as mysoginist as trump, just with different politics. Way to go, Lemmy.
- 9 days
Lemmy does have a serious misogynist problem. It’s a male dominated space with a lot of users from other, already misogynistic places, which creates a heavy concentration of it.
A lot of the misogyny isn’t acted upon, either, because mods and admins here sometimes share the same views. It’s no wonder women don’t feel comfortable here. The few that do stay, such as Velma, have to constantly battle misogyny. It’s fucking gross.
- 9 days
Absolutely. It’s just interesting how a lot of people here can call themselves leftists and in the same breath say something misogynistic and get away with it.
- Stormy@thelemmy.clubEnglish9 days
They’re ignorant. Its hard to wrap your head around without going to college or having an educated person leading. no one grew up with it being an okay thing to talk about, and they’ve fucked the last decades generation of men’s heads hard-core.
shalafi@lemmy.worldEnglish
9 daysI don’t go looking for misogyny any more than I go looking for offense in general, but the thing I see in discussions about age and sex is the notion that women have no agency if an older and/or rich man comes on to them. They’re talked about like helpless little puppies that have to be kept in the yard or they’ll get run over.

There’s a difference between looking for something and noticing something.
There’s also a difference between realizing you did something wrong and getting defensive that someone noticed you did something wrong.

- schipelblorp@sh.itjust.worksEnglish9 days
Is it body shaming or surgery shaming? I think the difference is a) choice and b) influencing people to make different choices that they are actually capable of making (ie not have surgery).
- Victor@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
I would say her body was probably great until she chose to ruin it with fake shit in several places. Just my opinion. Natural is best, regardless, that’s what I feel.
I am also of the opinion that tight clothes are more attractive regardless of body type, but that’s another story.
Anyway, she has the right to look any which way she likes — she’s definitely not looking like that to please me, that’s for sure. 😅 I’m just surprised to hear men thinking a fake ass is sexy.
Like whenever I get vibes to watch some adult content, I will always get immediately off-put by a fake ass or boobs. Sometimes even lip fillers will be a turnoff. It just doesn’t register as human to me. It feels like an android with deteriorated animatronics. And in the adult industry, this leaves me with quite the narrow band of available content, ngl.
- 9 days
Is it the same as body shaming if she chose to look like that through surgery? To me it feels no different than to talk shit about somebody’s choice of clothes or hairstyle.
She wasn’t born looking that, and that is not something she would have no control over. She deliberately inflated her ass to the point that she can’t sit like a normal person and that makes it fair game to be insulted
- expr@programming.devEnglish9 days
