“A Bug’s Land” (stylized “a bug’s land”) was an area of Disney California Adventure themed after Pixar’s 1998 film A Bug’s Life. The land consisted of Flik’s Fun Fair, which opened on October 7, 2002, and was set in a representation of the film’s fictional universe with four rides targeted towards young children; Flik’s Flyers, Francis’ Ladybug Boogie, Tuck and Roll’s Drive 'Em Buggies, and Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train. The area also included a water play area targeted towards young children. An outside area contained the It’s Tough to Be a Bug! theater, which was an original area of the park when it opened on February 8, 2001. The area closed on September 4, 2018 to make way for Avengers Campus.
they had A Bugs Life themed attractions at disney parks for almost 20 years, this weird conspiratorial crap is lingering in THEY dont want you to know! crao, hollywood movies arent going to save you.
The movie ends with the big bad grasshopper getting eaten by a bird, something totally out of the hands of the ants.
if you sincerely think A Bugs Life didnt have it’s cultural moment you werent conscious in 1998.
- Earthwormjim91@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Yeah seriously. A Bugs Life is generally considered one of the big Pixar classics. It was huge and it’s societal lasting was decades.
- ForeverComical@lemmy.caEnglish5 days
Unfortunately, the conspiratorial crap is how you get dumb people in a political movement. It’s easier to see individuals as evil than a system putting the wrong people in power.

4 daysYeah - and the movie is available for streaming on Disney+. You can still buy new DVDs and Blu-Rays. They are still selling merchandising for it. The most recent apperance of those characters was in a Disney videogame in 2024. This is a 28 year old movie that never got the cult status like toy story or lion king and that is exactly the thing you would expect.

Not so much
There were theme park rides and merchandise

But the Disney World show was recently replaced with Zootopia.
- CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.socialEnglish4 days
The movie about how the crack epidemic was manufactured by the state?
- 5 days
I mean that’s less a conspiracy and more the march of time.
Obviously they’re pushing the newer stuff more.
- protist@retrofed.comEnglish5 days
They also replaced Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Pretty sure that’s because it was decades old rather than some political commentary
- Soupbreaker@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Aw, weak. The Wind in the Willows and The Hobbit really fueled my lifelong dream of living in a well-appointed hole.
- Cethin@lemmy.zipEnglish5 days
Yeah, but that was recently. It was A Bugs Life when I was a child, and it only recently changed. I want to guess it lasted around 20y, but I can’t be bothered to look it up. Anyway, it’s not like they tried to bury it.
- Pratai@piefed.caEnglish5 days
Bruh… never stand in the way of a meme meant to manufacture outrage. Rookie mistake. The kids get super mad when nuance enters the chat.
- nilloc@discuss.tchncs.deEnglish5 days
There was a whole bugs life area of Disney land in California around 2015 I think.
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish5 days
More than one person has told me their class consciousness started with an Ant’s Life.
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish5 days
Idk I didn’t see these movies, it might be thanks for the correction if so.
I am already very enthusiastic about, uh, nevermind.
- LilB0kChoy@reddthat.comEnglish5 days
They came out close together and both featured ants as main protagonists. A Bug’s Life is the one pictured.
- 5 days
Antz was the “copycat” movie that was rushed out to beat A Bug’s Life into the theaters. Back when animation studios even bothered with that shit.
- Psythik@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
I find it neat from a psychological standpoint the way your brain merged the two titles into one.
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish5 days
The way I merged two things i’ve never seen? You are a [redacted] clearly.
- Psythik@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
I don’t understand. My comment wasn’t meant to be an insult.
If I stuck a nerve, it wasn’t intentional. I’m just fascinated by how the brain works.
- nieminen@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
It’s also possible they were aware of both individual titles, and conflated them purposefully to elicit the response it got. Given the OCs responses to some of the comments, I’m inclined to lean into this explanation.
Which is also fascinating in its own right.
- BreadOven@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
Just using [redacted] doesn’t mean your not an abelist asshole if you still think of using terms like that.
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish4 days
Give it a rest, nobody wants to ban words like stupid, moron, idiot, asshole, douchebag. No one, and you will harm us all in continuing to try.
You are also grasping at straws for a criticism here. You have nothing,
- BreadOven@lemmy.worldEnglish4 days
Woah. Don’t cut yourself on that edge haha. You may need to ask your mum for a bandage.
- grue@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Yes.
(I only saw Antz but not A Bug’s Life, and just sort of assumed Antz had the more subversive social message because it wasn’t Disney.)
- chuckleslord@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Definitely. The collective workers rise up against the militaristic ruling class, after, of course, those rulers attempt to murder them all for their ‘glorious future’. Unfortunately, Antz and A Bug’s Life also share something else in common. Both star sex pests in the leading role.

5 daysThis is like saying you learned about the late Renaissance era of history, and marine biology, from watching The Little Hunchback of Notre Dame.
- brian@programming.devEnglish5 days
or perhaps their interest started there as a child, causing them to study further later? that doesn’t sound like a crazy statement
hansolo@lemmy.todayEnglish
5 daysI meant more so that learning about social issues from corporate children’s entertainment might not be the highest-fidelity way to do that, and that combining the two names into one “story” means that it’s like the lessons learned from “Disney-PIxar’s Antz’ Life” might be jumbled a bit.

“Ants are not meant to serve grasshoppers. I’ve seen these ants do great things! And year after year, they manage to pick enough food for themselves, and you! So who’s the weaker species? Ants don’t serve grasshoppers! We’re a lot stronger than you say we are. And you know it… don’t you?”
- 5 days
Because individualism is pop, not collective action like whatever the ants are doing
- Godort@lemmy.caEnglish5 days
Ants are only allowed when they push a pro-conformist capitalist message, such as with The Ant and the Grasshopper
- LilB0kChoy@reddthat.comEnglish5 days
Ironic you say this because the plot of A Bug’s Life was initially inspired by Aesop’s The Ant and the Grasshopper.
- Wataba@sh.itjust.worksEnglish5 days
Everyone remembers this movie for the ‘workers rise up’.
I rememeber it for the shitty cliche ‘liar revealed’ story. I remember it for the nasty, mean spirited ‘humour’.
I remember it for the transphobic ‘joke’ that they just loved to use in all the trailers. (“Yikes! She’s a guy!”)
I remember this movie for starring a fucking pedophile.
This movie is ass and deserves to be forgotten.
SkunkWorkz@lemmy.worldEnglish
5 daysI thought you were mixing up this movie with Antz, because the pedo Woody Allen is in that movie. I didn’t realize Kevin Spacey is in Bug’s Life.

5 daysDisney seem to only do such treatment for its own movies, so this Disney-Pixar animation might be safe.

Well before those accusations came out. At least take solace in the fact he played the bad guy, thus art
imitatingforeshadowing life again.(Assuming you’re referring to Kevin Spacey.)
- MurrayL@lemmy.worldEnglish5 days
Sure, I’m just saying that might be one factor in why they’re not exactly eager to promote the movie these days.
- bedwyr@piefed.caEnglish5 days
Spacey’s rapey ass tried to play the gay card when the allegations came out, like that would make it ok. He got buried, fuck that guy.
