Denuvo has done some homework, though. The filing lists a Discord user ID, a Reddit account and seven Steam profiles that it believes are linked to the cracker.
Denuvo hopes the information linked to these accounts will eventually unmask the cracker. Games have to be bought before they can be cracked, for example, and Steam purchases come with payment details.
I hope this person has good OPSEC.

FWIW, untold numbers of people share their sanitized Steam files for the greater good. Very few, if any, well-known “crackers” purchase all of the games they help do what it says on their tin.
This claim by Denuvo is not just asinine, but proves even further that they’re absolute idiots in their field. 🙄

For anyone unfamiliar, I strongly recommend Michael Bazzell’s book Extreme Privacy for a fantastic entry into this world. It covers much more than your typical OPSEC stuff, but it is thorough, well written, and fun to learn about.

unfortunately by the nature of editing and publishing, books are going to be behind the times by a good amount. with how quickly our rights are being eroded, you can look to them for foundational knowledge, but nothing cutting-edge or legally up to date.
as Nate said in their reply to you, inteltechniques. com will provide smaller updates. privacyguides.org can also be a decent place for tech/software recommendations.
however, if you’re going into the extremes that bazzell does in his book, getting at least one good lawyer is inescapable. that’s how you stay up to date with how things actually work at a state and federal level, not some random people like myself on Lemmy.

If it’s not a saleable good/product, it doesn’t qualify as theft when someone acquires it from a different source than one’s “store”, etc.
In a similar vein, the vast majority of “craft distillers” do nothing other than water down (aka “proofing”) the bulk distillate they’d purchased from Jack Daniels, et al, and the simple fact that doing so makes it a saleable product enables them to claim “Produced and bottled in (location)”, and people just slurp it down… 🤷🏼♂️

In fairness so do most games that launch with planned dlc. And you do get endings for each character that wrap up most plot points in the base game. All the “new” assassin’s creed games have done this, you get two or three endings in the base game and the dlcs will wrap up a few remaining threads not covered in the base. Base game endings are left a little open because it’s an ongoing game series but they absolutely wrap up the main plot, it’s a bit misleading to say the ending is locked behind dlc when it’s really just one ancillary plot thread that gets explored and resolved.

In fairness; STFU. Not fully fleshing out a game with planned intent on releasing doc can go to hell. Games were a hell of a lot more engaging when you had to put out effort to unlock characters or skins or weapons instead of buying them, and the end of an RPG wrapped everything up and felt complete.

They aren’t, but they have the understanding of literal children. They can’t process the fact that a pirated game isn’t a lost sale, because to them every single person on the planet wants what they have to offer, and if they get it any way OTHER than buying it outright at full price, CLEARLY it must be theft and people are targeting them specifically because what they have is so great.
I pirated Minecraft back in the beta days, decided I loved it, and eventually bought it (before notch went full mask off and the sale of mojang) had it not been for TPB, mojang would have had one less sale.
Same for several others. Hilariously, the only time I ever recieved a c&d was for a game I loved and then canceled the online order for when I got the letter two days later. I wanted to buy it, but the letter made up my mind that I was never giving them money again. Fuck em. Dead rising went downhill after the first one anyway so I didn’t miss much.

TBF, every time some corpo fuckstick parrots “theft”, I’m reminded that none of them want any of us to dig into the age-old tradition of wage theft. That’s theft, and what they’re constantly whinging about plainly isn’t.

I suppose not, but they likely want IP addresses or some type of personal identifer. That’s also why they want the discord info too
If voices did it right, all Reddit will have is a fake email and an IP that isn’t theirs. The IP would be a VPN or a compromised/hacked server. Behind that should be another VPN/hacked server, maybe then over tor, etc, etc, etc.
