Coming from a country that has a very big licorice-candy based selection, there is a lot of room within the category too, from sweet to salty, from hard to soft licorice.

Some of them I like, some I don’t.

    • same. it’s an acquired taste that I grew up with cause my mom ate it. it’s a great treat especially because no one will steal it from me lol

  • Is the FDA announcing this, so I’m guessing the announcement is that somehow the licorice has been contaminated with uranium or something because they just keep escalating.

    • This particular screenshot was from 2018, but nowadays you are totally right. Just waiting to see the next thing they announce has been recalled.

  • not surprised, american liquorice has a tragic lack of ammonium chloride

  • Not a shitpost, but don’t eat too much black licorice all at once, it can cause heart problems. Too much of the glycyrrhizin produced naturally in the plant’s root that’s used to make black licorice causes your kidneys to flood potassium out into your blood and it’ll mess up the electrical signals in your heart. You have to eat like two bags a day for two weeks though.

Liquorice allsorts were a fixture of my childhood. Haven’t had them in decades.

Edit to add: I call the pelotons of road cyclists in their colourful sponsored jerseys ‘The Liquorice Allsorts Crew’.

    • I get them in the Dutch section in the “international foods” aisle in my local grocery story. (I know they’re from more places than the Netherlands, that’s just where I find them.)

  • Black licorice, despite comprising only 14% of the total licorice inventory, is responsible for over 50% of customer complaints.

    • responsible for over 50% of customer complaints.

and I quote a complaining customer : “And yet AGAIN there wasn’t enough of it in the package”

  • I know this a shitpost, because yet another food item legitimately has shit in it, this is now a constant problem in America.

I can only presume it’s because the workers are treated extremely badly, remunerated poorly, and the corpos face no consequences for apparently disgusting factories, and there’s no regulations?

There’s no reason this should happen in a modern factory, there should be three hand wash stations before a worker even gets close to the food.

    “American food tastes like shit”

    • Nah, it’s just that some people don’t like the flavor of anise.

      • Okay but for real a little anise in a few recipes makes them taste right. I do not like the taste of black licorice but I keep a little star anise in the spice cupboard and a small piece makes ramen taste right.

    • I think rats and birds in the factories are the main source of shit contamination in american foods factories

Their actual quote is “recalled 100 tons for possible fecal contamination”.

But it’s not any more real than OP’s image

  • Unfortunately, these days it feels like there’s poison in almost everything, as if they’re trying to kill us faster.

    • I don’t understand. I honestly love black licorice.

They wouldn’t even make it if no one liked it. I also like dishes that use fennel or anise.

Always have and always will. Red licorice is the garbage one.

      • I was in my teens, I think, the first time a friend said they liked black licorice. I really thought they were kidding, just blew my mind. I mean, if you like something, you like it, can’t really argue with that. Still.

        • I think the flavor is too strong on its own for people to appreciate, but you may be surprised how it has been used in dishes you loved.

      • I also love licorice =)

I really like licorice root tea, and when I was a kid I’d take the seeds out of star anise pods and suck on them XD

I’m the opposite. Cannot stand a hint of licorice or anise in any shape or form. It had made me genuinely gag in the childhood. Nowadays it’s just unpleasant to an extreme degree.

        P.S.:
I’m not dunking on the thing. If you like, you like. Good for you.
