Not really. Large influxes of sugar put a lot of strain on the bodies ability to regulate blood sugar levels. It’s not surprising that when we regularly consume way more than our ancestors would have that things go south.

The age of the Earth is a significant fraction of the age of the universe so we are not totally divorced from the timescale.
I’m not sure there is a better way - all the user moderation approaches I’ve seen involve leaning on the regulars to spot stuff. The alternative is dedicated moderators which tends to lead to it’s own problems. I don’t think you want to rely on those who have just signed up as that would be open to abuse pretty quickly.
