  • To be fair requiring people who have been convicted of a crime by a jury of their peers through a fair and just legal system to do labor isn’t itself a form of slavery

umm… yes? yes it is? it’s just that our perception of what “slavery” is has been drastically altered by the curious institution of chattel slavery, which in all of human history is a VERY recent development. before this the main forms of slavery were prisoner of war labor camps and punitive labor camps. slavery is any labor in which the laborer is coerced into unfair labor terms against their will. a jury of your peers press ganging you into labor as punishment for a crime is slavery even if it is defined as legal in societal institutions

  • it’s strongman politics. once a jury has condemned a prisoner to death, the whole dynamic surrounding their case shifts. no longer are they a person whose life carries value, even if that value is complicated by their actions. they become a shibboleth upon which every strongman politician must prove that they are not soft on crime. none of these appeals have taken into consideration the real facts of the case or the woman, but have been treated as an opportunity to prove to authoritarian supporters that this lawyer, this judge, this executive, whoever is able to step in, but doesn’t, to set things right is a big strong man that you should worship as a big strong man, and that they perform the role of big authoritarian daddy with aplomb.

  • 100%! I’ve seen so many people treat it as a travel opportunity and then go without any consideration for that you will only see what Israel wants you to see, and that it is only so cheap to go because they are paying to brainwash you.

Also the notion that a birthright trip is the defining aspect of Jewish life is INSANE! The whole thing with Jewishness is that our experiences with the experience are varied and diverse, yet there is a sense of community that ties us all together. To ignore that and focus on a state sponsored act of violence when for so many of us the point of our existence is to defy state violence is disgusting, vile, and infuriating.

The most horrifying to me has been how many former friends have come back from their trip and no longer eat unleavened bread for passover because “the exodus is over” like that was ever the fucking point
