  • Yeah, I’m very interested in the user side of Linux, less so what’s under the hood. There’s some degree of it there, I do use Gentoo, which is more manual than any other distro I’ve come across, but that’s about as deep as I want to go for a daily driver. I am a little tempted to do LFS on a VM once I have a computer that can handle it again

  • We live in a world where I’m now seeing various slurs that originated in Nazi circles being used as regular slang.

“Degenerate” as an insult is based in social degeneration theory, notably something coined by the original Nazi party to describe people they classed as sub-human, and they thought were leading to the degeneration of society.

Forgive me for not liking when people use concepts coined by the Nazis in the same ways the Nazis used them, just on different groups. It’s not like classing people as sub-humans has lead to problems in the past or anything.

Yes, fuck Nazis, but also fuck Nazi ideas, and maybe we shouldn’t be using them.

  • Our old cat (she passed, 21 years old) started getting chin acne, so we got a spare set of metal bowls that fit in the stand we used. Spare bowls in the cupboard would go into the stand, bowls in the stand would go to the dishwasher, then after it was run would go into the cupboard. Having spares definitely helps, especially if they’re dishwasher safe

  • Personally when I stopped using Ubuntu (this was years ago), I hopped around different Ubuntu distros for a long time. Probably a good place to start, especially since Mint is based on Ubuntu.

After that I used Garuda (fairly user friendly, does require some terminal usage), then Arch, then NixOS, back to Arch, and now I’m pretty happy with Gentoo.

My main piece of advice when doing this: Set up the install to use a separate /home partition. It makes things way easier. You keep all of your configurations and such, just have a different OS under the hood.

  • Ehh, having used all 3 Arch and Nix are about the same level of difficulty, Nix just doesn’t have documentation (or at least didn’t when I was using it). Flakes make it more complicated, but those are 100% optional, and I didn’t use them

Gentoo is a notable step up. Shit actually breaks there, horrendously. Still love it tho.

HMLinux does, in fact, scare me. I’m debating doing LFS, but I don’t think I could handle the difficulty that HML would offer

  • The problem is that this isn’t like Microsoft Office > LibreOffice/OnlyOffice/whatever. You’re not on Facebook for Facebook, you’re on Facebook for the people there. It’s why I have a lot of issues getting off of YouTube. I’m not on YouTube because their interface is nice, I’m on YouTube because the people I want to watch don’t post shit elsewhere. It’s a cycle, to get users we need stuff, and for stuff we need creators, and for creators we need users. When it comes to online platforms we don’t need an alternative to YouTube, we need an alternative to Markiplier, which is harder to come up with.

If you can get your friends, and family onto Friendica that would help quite a bit. The problem is that using a new server is hard for the end user (I would know, all of my fediverse presence is on servers I host), and telling someone “Use Friendica” is like telling someone to “Use email”. Get a Friendica/Mastodon/Whatever server, and keep it in your back pocket. Give them a link to that server, not to Friendica/Mastodon/Whatever as a whole.

Admittedly I don’t know how hard it is to stop using Facebook because I stopped using Facebook right after they took away the chronological timeline, and stopped using Messenger a few years ago. But spending some time to get a timeline together that you can boost will help any new users you recruit. Crucially, to promote viable alternatives, you need to be part of the viable alternatives, otherwise you’re just someone telling someone to jump into something new with 0 guidance, which is a good way to have them leave.
