Humans are narcissistic and selfish because over the millenia the ones that were selfish outcompeted the ones that weren’t. It’s totally natural to be selfish. Some are just better at hiding it than others.

However there is also a simple social aspect to including yourself in photos. It’s a clear visceral way to say “I was here”. A photo without your face does not have capture the “you” part of that statement. Social interaction is not just an exchanging of ideas, it’s also about building relationships, and for that to happen, the “you” part of the equation is vital.

To be fair I rarely include myself in photos, but for the same reason I am also less integrated into my social circles.

Well Paul Graham is not referring to you, since the rest of his quote makes it clear that he is talking about those who don’t engage deeply.

Imo there’s no point in discussing a quote or article if you aren’t going to take it in good faith. If you take the worst interpretation of their words, of course it’s going to be bad.

But if you take Paul Graham’s words at face value, then he’s simply saying that he believes shallow engagement had a large and negative influence on online discourse. That’s all you need to take from that quote.

I never said Paul Graham was a progressive left wing? Also that’s the exact identity politics that I was alluding to. Categorizing people and then making large assumptions on the meaning of their words based on the categorization.

Another article of Drew Devault grasping straws. For example he picks out this quote when trying to diminish Paul Graham:

I literally don’t see what’s wrong with this quote. Paul Graham is referencing identity politics, virtue signaling, and other behaviors that were definitely common before, and are still fairly common today.

Read the article, it’s all covered there. Open source password managers like bitwarden and keepass are ideal, but passkey support and integration with the OS is not there yet. With text passwords, you always had to fallback of copy and paste. With passkeys, OS integration is crucial.

My guess is that it may happen, or the big companies like Google or Apple can keep shifting the standards to keep the open source options outdated, like what Google already does with web standards.

Declarative configuration (like docker compose) is basically “code local, push remote”, and it has a lot of benefits, including improving efficiency because you have a clearer idea of exactly what is set up on the server, to make it easier to debug or make changes.

Contrast this with just sshing in and running a bunch of commands to install something. Then coming back months later and wondering “what files did I touch? what packagea did I install? Hmm dpkg log says I added X but then later I removed it, so was it important?” Etc.

The article is saying that while passkeys could theoretically be better, the current implementation is bad because it cedes power to centralized 3rd parties, entrenching users who now have no way out when that 3rd party is incompetent or corrupt.

When I talk about de-anonymizing the user, I mean that Google Play has already identified the user of the device. Then they can spy on the Signal app to try to identify the Signal account.

But also, regarding ZKP, afaik their ZKP doesn’t account for timing attacks. Signal can log when each account was made, and collude with Google to figure out which payments correspond to which accounts

Fair enough, I see what you mean now. This is more of a progress report than a project release. Sorry for the misunderstanding. FWIW I think your project is cool regardless of whether you used AI or not, so great work!

P.S. Out of curiosity I did read a bit of your comment history and I do agree with your comments w.r.t privacy and AI disclosure. It is a tricky problem indeed.

Ok so given how long it took them to allow an alternative to phone numbers, it will probably be at least 5 years before you can pay using a de-googled phone. I really don’t understand what’s so hard for them to accept crypto, they already do for donations. Smells like government involvement.
