I suppose the interpretation of “debate” here is important. I was thinking more of disagreeing and presenting facts to back up point rather than necessarily trying to attack or win something (though I did plenty of that in my younger days as well)

Personally, I have on some things in decades being online. Especially if there is peer-reviewed evidence/studies about the topic in question.

On individual points, yes, but I hardly engage these days. This was also back in the days of forums and fark more than on modern SNS

I’m possibly losing my job and currently job-hunting. I’ve seen open positions for Palantir and Flock and would sooner be dead than working for them.

Are they going to ship you a 国内専用 (inside country exclusive use) switch? IIRC you also need a Japanese nintendo account. I don’t remember if that also requires a Japanese credit card (a lot of Japanese companies do, or at least used to). The switch 2 price difference is also because of this; the domestic exclusive is only in Japanese as well. I’m not sure if that overrides games with a choice, but the UI and such is Japanese.

I’m in my mid 40s and I dunno. I thought I had it. Now, my company that promised permanent remote work and confirmed my moving was fine, is trying to kill remote work. I live in very rural Japan and there aren’t many jobs out here. No US/Canada companies seem interested in working with a backend engineer on the other side of the world. I have back problems so there are also limits on what physical work I can do so something like construction is basically not an option. So, with my life more than half over, I might lose everything again. If I do, my life will just go to being completely over.

Compared to my early 20s, living in rural Japan is probably the most surprising things. As well it should as now my plan is to GTFO to a country that believes more in workers’ rights, allows getting citizenship while maintaining an old one (need my US citizenship until my parents pass and Japan has no visa to move them here unless they’re basically homeless), etc.

Eggs don’t sound like veggies to me but, at the same time, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. I cut beef almost entirely out of my diet, but I still eat other meat. I also eat offal and such, though. Still, beef can be really bad for the environment so I decided to make it something I have a couple of times a year (or if served it as a guest). Will purists or vegetarians or vegans largely dislike this decision? Probably. Still, I’d rather slightly reduce my impact than do nothing at all.

I think the internet, and social media in particular, play the bigger part here. People talk online and feel like they’ve done something about it. In most cases, they have not, but now they’re not going to go out and protest and be angry somewhere in most cases.

Having lived in Japan for over a decade, I think the west generally over-elevates/-mystifies Japan. Capitalists gonna capitalist. They can do more work with fewer people and make more money. Most Japanese consumers also do not care at all about generative AI. It’s in the train stations, city offices, and everywhere else as a part of the normal.

If true, then there exists a world where I banned an account of his when I was a dev/admin on gaming sites back in the day. We were zero-tolerance for RMT, account sales, botting, etc.

I was personally so against it that, many years later, I had someone apply for a job at my company where they listed writing cheats/bots/etc. for MMOs on their resume. Instant trash bin with that one.

In some places, one needs licenses similar to or the same as a hotel to run an air bnb. In Tokyo, there have been problems with illegal ones, though.
