Fundamentally I believe that this is more to do with power tripping prison officers than the crime of the prisoner, as this ban is for all prisons in that province, affecting everyone from low level drug charges and financial crimes to this guy.
The prison claim it can be used to brew beer, which he rightly points out fresh fruit has more living yeast and sugar, which the prisoners already have available.
You’re right, it’s literally the equivalent of him asking for jam or butter. Neighboring district’s prisons have Vegemite, or should all prisoners be given a thin gruel and be made to be thankful for that?
The bit that irks me is the fact that he went about requesting it in earnest and built a genuine case for what is the smallest of concessions and still was rejected.
If you don’t allow people to see that their trying in earnest and trying to work within the system doesn’t provide any results or even open dialogue, what reason do they have to try it in the future?

Always worth pointing out that the kW of heat energy is only using between 0.25 and 0.5 kW of electricity to bring that heat into the house.
Heat pumps don’t generate heat; they literally move heat from the outside air, into the house…
Which is so much more efficient, it’s mind boggling there’s such resistance to it
