  • I must be jaded because an opening/closing animation as “innovative” makes me want to puke. If the matte screen holds up to 2000 sheets of writing using a stylus, that’s more interesting.

As for usability, I desperately want to combine my note taking device, my ereader, and my phone (comms/camera). I have an eink device, but I don’t find the reflective display worth carrying a second device, usually. After trying out the News+ feature on my iPad for a month I was addicted, but my phone is too small for comfortable long-form reading. And I take a LOT of pen notes on my 12” tablet but, again, it’s another device to lug around. Sometimes I need that screen real estate to draw but often I can get by with an A6 notepad for what I need. The only think keeping me from throwing (more) money at Apple is knowing this is a Gen 1 device and it’s better to have others find the early flaws and work through the bugs.

  • Given the critical amount of oil imported for domestic refining by the US, shutting off access to Canadian oil would substantially impact US refineries, which would flow to both domestic supply of refined products as well as exports and be a devastating blow to US refineries. It feels a little like mutual assured destruction in the energy sector.

A blockage would also be nearly a declaration of war against Canada. I’m sure the spineless Rs currently in the US congress would simply wring their hands (and at least one Maine Senator would voice her “concern”) but a flip in both houses might substantially change to outlook.

More importantly, there is nobody in the US Republican Party who has even half the narcissism of Trump, and of those none have even a quarter of his charisma/cult following. As absolutely trashed as the US’ reputation is internationally, the colonial expansion era of the US will die when Trump is no longer directing policy.

The article has theoretical merit, but the practical application is so remote as to weigh very little on actionable policy. (IMHO, of course)

  • The city needs to rescind the zoning and block all development until the terms (housing) is complete and operational. If the developer bails, ban the developer and all of the individuals involved from any business license in the city in perpetuity. Or, if that is not found to be legal, sue them for the cost of the development plus penalties. Until cities hold developers’ feet to the fire, they will lie to get what they want and then renege on any part that doesn’t make them instant money. It happens all the time and it needs to stop.

  • If you’re dark at 4 pm, then you’re only getting 8 hours of sunlight. Someone is going to be getting up in the dark, getting home from work in the dark, or both if your employer manages to time your particular work day just right.

What you need is “Personal Daylight Time" or PDT. See, we just need to put an abstraction layer between the icky science of the earth rotating and the sun being overhead at a particular time each day, which can be terribly annoying for those who talked through science class in 3rd grade.

Everyone who wants something other than “Standard” time just puts the times they’d like the sun to rise and set each day. The app then maps those times to the local sunrise and sunset. When you get your work schedule or dinner reservation, the app converts from the (completely unreadable) standard time based on your location on earth to your personal time which you feel maximizes your personal enjoyment. Likewise, you can send an invite in your time, and the recipient will see it in their time.

It’s just like having Google Calendar manage times zones for you when you have a distant Zoom call. Simple, no?

*Note: you will experience faster or slower personal seconds throughout the day depending on your preferred sunrise and sunset days, and it will vary by day.
