Personally speaking knowingly harming your own people is disqualifying, deserving of punishment and removal from access to power. Incompetence is not really different; just cause you fucked up and made a mistake, doesn’t undo the harm done in the process, nor is it an excuse to get to continue to use power and expect different outcomes, as you’ve shown you can’t be trusted with it regardless of sincerity. Far, FAR too often these days we are fed excuses and the idea that somehow it’s okay to have people in power who just weren’t really tested or prepared for it ruin things. Even if they fucked things up, they tried their best and didn’t really know what they were doing (one assumes) and that’s personally relatable… How is it okay to allow people like that to be put in charge and entrusted with power? Should we make your dog the dentist because he’s been a good boy despite not having any training or apparent capacity for the role, and are you going to be the first to sit in that chair?

We are not talking about personal relationships here, where failures and accidents might have personal impacts but none regarding the wellbeing of society holistically. You simply cannot treat people in positions of power with the same kind of grace, as the SCALE of their impact is capable of incredible harms, harms nearly beyond measure through social cost and structural damage to systems and people.

Everyone is political. Politics is where alternate perspectives intersect in a social setting. Everything in life that involves multiple individuals shaping a shared experience is politics, and so you cannot functionally be the thing you claim. To say “I’m not political” is actually to say “I am afraid of taking a stand, I can’t handle conflict, and what I believe means less to me than the risks I fear for showing it”. Be political, embrace having views and things you care about and being ready to advocate for them, stand for them, and act, because I promise you the people who don’t believe your perspective matters or can be tolerated are acting on their beliefs.
