  • I don’t think there is a solid answer but the current political chaos points to one step

    • make junk and fast food more expensive - vice taxes

Looking at myself, I see portion size is the number one issue. Mental state also contribute, although I can’t claim anything treatable. So I eat too much and it’s a comfort thing but I don’t see a way for government to help me do the right thing there

Exercise. While exercise isn’t the main contributor to being overweight, it does go to state of mind. I’m much less likely to overeat when I’ve been active. This is where we ought to be able to do something to keep people moving

  • If you’re talking strictly financial, getting married. I wouldn’t trade that part of my life, or the kids if got out of it, but strictly financially, I lost more than most people make in a lifetime.

I went into it with a sizeable emergency fund and well on track for an early retirement

Then I got laid off at the wrong time and used my emergency fund in a fancy wedding ceremony. I figured I could make it back pretty quickly, especially with the second income

But I quickly realized I wasn’t saving anything. When a medical emergency hit, my only recourse was a loan and emergency withdrawal from 401k

Fast forward 20 years and still no savings. While I had paid off the 401k loan, I made no contributions. Now I was way behind being able to retire. Then divorce happened. Lost half my house, half my 401k, but no savings to lose.

Now I’m living alone in the same house. I have a huge car loan. I have huge child support payments. I have college expenses for two kids. Yet I’ve been able to rebuild my emergency savings and max out 401k contributions. I’m in much better shape financially, just running out of time to save

  • Do those really work? I don’t have a need or counter space for the “oven”, and the toaster needs to toast bread. Are those as fast and do they toast as well as the more specialized appliance?

The last thing I need is to take up more counter space. To the contrary, I am considering getting rid of my air fryer. The air fryer has worked really well, so well that I got an oven with that functionality. It would be tough to convince me to take up more counter space

Edit: then again, the internet claims an air fryer is effective at toast
