          Discord is getting too big for its own good, governments are already on top of it. For the EU at least, it’s likely it will be branded as “social media” and receive a total ban unless if you show your police ID.

        Yup same here. Left all servers, messaged the handful of people I chatted with there that I’m leaving and to add me on Matrix if they want to keep in touch, then uninstalled.

        I setup my own Matrix homeserver back when discord announced the global age stuff earlier this year, and its been rock solid since then with the couple friends that also weren’t happy with discord. With it being proven reliable for many months now, I don’t really need discord for anything

          What does it take to get voice/video chat working on Matrix? I see Element has their own server stack, but I can’t tell how open it is, and that’s kinda the big thing that’s keeping me away from trying to go harder on Matrix.

            MatrixRTC is part of the Matrix protocol these days, so if the client is compliant, it should work on any server setup for it. I use synapse and livekit, and it works great. Its all just one docker compose stack

            I was using element mostly, but recently switched to Sable. There are a few more that also support voice and video I believe

              Isn’t the 1-1 and group call stuff a different tech stack or something? I tried one of the clients and calls worked, but group calls didn’t.

              May have improved now.

      This is actually what pisses me off with modern tech, we have soo much computing power that we have forgotten to properly optimize.

      What used to be a software problem, writing code efficiently has turned into a hardware problem, with only one solution:

      Throw more computing power at it.

    Remarkable! A “game mode” for gamers? On Discord no less! What will they think of next? A “stock ticker mode” for financial analysts? A “metronome mode” for musicians? A “mirror mode” for make-up artists? They are truly thinking out-of-the-box to expand their user base.

    Mumble is much better for gaming. It’s lightweight and doesn’t use the GPU at all. Since it’s self hosted, there is no ID verification.

      Mumble is also ONLY voice chat. The problem is that Discord is so many useful things at the same time - text chat, voice chat, video chat, and game streaming, all integrated together seamlessly - that it’s hard to move off of when you need a whole suite of applications to replace it.

            I’m not sure what you mean by a text chat functionality being more or less integrated? Integrated with what? OP stated that Mumble exclusively does voice chat, which is simply wrong. You can send text messages to users and channels.

    Wonder if it’ll fix the BS microstutter in certain games that’s caused by the process enforcing high cpu priority, or if I’ll have to continue using Process Lasso to force it down to normal and/or remember to close it when not in use…
