10 daysIs it really treason if it’s in line with what the government is doing?
- 10 days
It is if the government is also treasonous. Is it possible to charge an administration for treason? Perhaps we’ll see soon. Probably not, though.
- andallthat@lemmy.worldEnglish10 days
No, but I bet we could be charged for treason for speaking against Cheesecake Saddam
- wltr@discuss.tchncs.deEnglish9 days
Sorry to interrupt, but why the cheesecake? I just found it hilarious for some reason, but I’m not getting whether the cheesecake bears any hidden meaning I’m not getting.
- andallthat@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
The Cheesecake Factory is a restaurant chain. Its decor is intentionally over-the-top.
Saddam Hussein lived a very extravagant lifestyle, even by dictators’ standards, and famously built himself palaces so overfilled with gold and precious things that instead of looking luxurious they looked tacky and in horrible taste.
Obama joked that Trump’s White House looks like if Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory (Trump and MAGA took it about as well as you can imagine).
The brilliance of the joke is that, while being on the surface about interior design, Obama called Trump a narcissistic dictator getting rich by stealing from his own people. And clearly MAGAs choose to focus their response only on the Cheesecake part of the joke.
- wltr@discuss.tchncs.deEnglish9 days
Thank you so much for explaining this! I felt like I really like the joke / name, but the context made it truly brilliant indeed!
narp@feddit.orgEnglish
9 daysObama made a joke that the white house with the renovations under Trump (with all the gold and such) looks like as if Saddam opened a cheese factory. Of course the Republicans didn’t have any sense of humor…

9 daysYou sort of have to go down the line person by person, but yes (assuming we still had a functional 3 branch government). Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution:
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.
- Kaligalis@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
It’s not like US elections weren’t rigged by massive campaign spending before. This is literally how the system is set up and worked for decades before. Musk just did it “right” by buying the biggest media platform of the time. People literally laughed at the massive financial loss he made with Twitter… then the government changed. Some still don’t get what Musk did there.

9 daysPeople being uninformed mixed with misinformed will be the death of this species
- Kaligalis@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
People were always uninformed and greed rules the world since at least ten centuries. We literally had leaded gasoline and chemicals killing the ozone layer.
But we also got MAD figured out - probably the biggest achievement in human existence. And we banned leaded gasoline and the ozone layer killer chemicals. We solved acid rain too.
I think, our species is actually progressing positively right now - even though it may not always look like that.

Hmmm, that would be spectacular, but mercifully quick.
Perhaps we could put them in a carbon fiber submersible and cycle it between the ocean floor and back until it delaminates. That way the evemt is still quick, but they’ll first endure hours of anticipation.
…. Or we could just do it Mussolini style

Musk should be guillotined, but the US Constitution defines treason very spefically for a good reason. And this isn’t that.
- LilB0kChoy@reddthat.comEnglish10 days
Maybe this isn’t but that doesn’t mean Musk hasn’t committed, and shouldn’t be tried for, treason.
- 9 days
The point is, why is Russia supposedly the enemy of the US again?
Seems the US has lots of enemies, and the liberals and conservatives just disagree on who they should be at constant war with, not if they should be at war.
- LilB0kChoy@reddthat.comEnglish9 days
The point is, why is Russia supposedly the enemy of the US again?
Really? I thought the point was “Musk must be charged for treason.”
Didn’t realize you conflated a whole different argument into that one sentence.
Maybe take your strawman into the fields with the rest of the scarecrows.
- willington@lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish9 days
Don’t you have to be a government official to be tried for treason? That said, Musk did run an illegal government agency once, not that long ago. Musk might qualify for treason.
- 9 days
Did the US declare war on Russia this week? I didn’t hear about that.

9 daysHe has lived there since 1989 and has a US citizenship since 2002.
One can always obviously argue that it doesn’t count and that he is South African because of his Father and because he was born there, and/or Canadian because his mother is Canadian, but in that case the telephone is a Scottish (Alexander Graham Bell), gramophone a Russian (Emile Berliner) and the zipper a Swedish (Gideon Sundback) invention - all made by US immigrants with citizenships.
blitzen@lemmy.caEnglish
9 daysI almost edited my comment to revise my position, and I was waiting for someone to call me out. I’m glad you did. Immigrants built the US (Canada too), and fully earnestly I believe it’s what makes America great. I would be angry if someone questioned, say, Ilhan Omar’s citizenship and patriotism because she was born elsewhere. I can’t not hold that opinion simply because Musk is a piece of shit.
So without snark, I don’t question his citizenship. I don’t believe he holds the values I think make an “American” (or, uncomfortably, maybe he does…), but for better or for worse, a citizen he is.
- 10 days
I can see him mixing up the terms ‘American’ and ‘Asset’. At this point, they are quite synonymous.

10 daysMusk wanted to be Tony Stark. Somehow he ended up with Vladimir Putin in his fan club. The truly dystopian part isn’t the praise: it’s that one billionaire can turn critical communications infrastructure into his personal mood ring while governments keep treating him like a public utility with a podcast.

Another three sentence first comment on your own post that ends with a snappy metaphor. Might want to mix up your prompts.

I do mind the content. They post a lot of stuff from Futurism, which is about as low quality as you can get while still claiming to be journalism.

10 daystreating him like a public utility with a podcast
Elon Musk has a podcast? What does this mean?
eicker@lemmy.worldEnglish
10 daysNo, but Musk provides essential services while regularly hijacking three hour podcasts to complain about the government and world in general.
- 9 days
I think that if we’ve learned anything, it’s that being in those files means nothing.
At least in a huge portion of the West.
- Kaligalis@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
But Russia isn’t Israel. That the Mossad could force Musk to do anything they want doesn’t mean, Putin can too.
I think, this time it’s just Putin genuinely thinking that having his own Starlink would have made the Ukraine war so much easier - especially if his satellites would also have some electronic warfare equipment on board for jamming the real Starlink.
- 10 days
The article literally continues by saying that this “close contact” is primarily about avoiding LEO object collisions.
I’m sure these oligarchs are colluding on other shit, but it’s completely disingenuous to try to frame this particular comment as anything other than for operational purposes.
- thejml@sh.itjust.worksEnglish10 days
Why would two people as high ranking in their respective “companies” need to talk to discuss something as technical as avoiding LEO collisions? Like how much does either really know about their current constellation configuration? Those are operational level concerns, not CEO/Country Leader level conversations.
- 10 days
They would talk to coordinate who to talk to, but that would probably be the end. It can show respect when a CEO reaches out to another CEO to say hey we need to work together on this, who should my guy reach out to at your place. Maybe the occasional update.

- 10 days
I mean, good luck, but what do you intend to do when Chuck Schumer says that it’s time to move on as a nation?
- 10 days
Ukraine’s defense has been shown, at least in the past, to be crucially dependent on Starlink. So Putin is likely eager to make it as attractive as possible for Musk to turn that off.
Now, we can argue that having a single man-child idiot like Musk able to turn off things like this isn’t a good idea - but currently that is the case.
- Kaligalis@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
Putin wants his own Starlink. And he doesn’t want Musk to turn it off. He wants to be able to turn it off himself whenever he needs to - preferably without having to cause a Kessler syndrome.
