What a terrible time to be upgrading my PC. The GPU I wanted went fron 350 to 450 and now to 700€.
I found a deal for 600€, it’s either that or I will be stuck with a GeForce 1030 for even more years. And even if I bought it, I must hope Amazon doesn’t stop my order!

It’s a bit evil to say but there probably is going to be a national (US) recession or even global drop soon. I would just wait.
People will probably pawn off their parts for cheap, as most people are forced to do suring times of hardship,
but also if AI stops getting all of these massive speculative investments then theyre going to be forced to cannibalize their assets so we might see an influx of things becoming available like when the whole crypto mining craze died bc it wasn’t profitable anymore.
That said, the latter prob won’t be the same because the chips that would’ve made GPUs were used for other things that probably cant be repurposed for home computers.

2 hoursThere’s quite a few plans I have for recession. I’ve been made pretty aware that my job for the past 40+ years (not me working there but in the past 40 years this job has been around for and beyond) has never had lay offs or any issues regarding employment even during 2008.
I really like gold and silver but I’ve been putting it off for a while because after seeing the metals do the death dance I think we are close to shitting on the pot.

This has been my dilemma for quite a few months. I heard that it’s better to buy as soon as possible, because prices will only get worse for the next couple of years.
If a global recession were to happen, or even just in the US, causing the prices to drop globally, I wouldn’t mind waiting for a few more months. (You can’t be too frugal these times, can you?)
Decisions, decisions…

Good thing I built my rig when I did, it may be the last I have for a long time.

Same. Updated my own PC a couple years ago and my partner’s last year. Was looking into adding some extra drive space a few weeks ago but then decided it’s not worth the price at the moment. I will wait until Chinese manufacturing really kicks into high gear and floods the global market. Though i don’t expect this to happen until at least one to two years from now.

I try to build one once every ten years but if what you say is true and the components aren’t banned where I live I may upgrade much sooner. A year or two would be better than I expected.

I think one to two years is the minimum. I am optimistic about China managing to exponentially grow their advanced chip manufacturing output in a fairly short time, but i am pessimistic in the sense that i don’t think demand will really go down any time soon, quite the contrary.
It will also depend on when and the exact manner in which the AI bubble pops. And while i think outright bans are unlikely for Europe (idk about the US, they be crazy over there), i think there is a very real risk they may impose high tariffs on Chinese chips the way they did solar panels and EVs.
China really is the only hope here because even if demand does go down (if and when the data center industry crashes), the legacy manufacturers have already realized that people are willing to pay double or triple what they used to, so they have very little incentive to lower prices again.
It’s going to take new players coming onto the market and undercutting the old ones.

two years from now
Wow that would be amazing if it happened so soon. Meanwhile me with my PC from 2016 still going strong :)

I still use a 15 year old laptop when i travel, so i don’t think there is anything wrong with a 10 year old PC. Just make sure to have a backup drive, cause you never know with older drives.
