Any progress in stroke research is helpful. After seeing the aftermath of a couple family members having strokes, to say it’s life changing isn’t adequate. Truly terrible.

Is there some kind of interview to find a mouse that suffered from stroke?
Actually, I maybe don’t want to know the reality
- tempest@lemmy.caEnglish9 days
Biotech companies breed mice for specific models. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that they offer a mouse that has high probability to stroke.
Or just they just use magnets apparently (How do they work?)

No. They block the carotid artery.

Yeah… They give mice a lot of diseases, including diseases mice don’t get.
- tpihkal@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
A lot of money being wasted to find cures for mice. Maybe they should work on finding cures for people instead.

I always thought that the /s was a stupid thing, but judging from the down votes on your comment, I guess it’s a necessity
- SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.caEnglish9 days
They have a point. Mouse model research translation to human disease has a poor track record. Mouse model labs spin in circles between models and never try to translate into humans. Some diseases stall for decades in models.
The mouse’s brain plasticity is orders of magnitude higher than a human’s.

I have seen many people hold this opinion unironically.

9 daysDo you volunteer to have a stroke induced so researchers then can test their treatment?

9 daysNurse: “Sir, would you like to try this new and experimental treatment, or do you prefer proven methods?” Stroke victim: “Hhhrrrngn!” Nurse: “I’m sorry, what was that?” Stroke victim: "Hhhhhhhrhghn!!! Hrhh … " *dies*
Great idea, Sherlock!

Yes, this research would move so much faster if we simply induced strokes in people and injected them with stuff to see what happens… /s

I spent a career in research and I can tell you that mice are excellent models for discovery, AMA
- SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.caEnglish9 days
mice are excellent models for discovery
Not really. What’s the translate rate to humans? 9%?
Mice can model some diseases well, but they are not universally good models.
- GingaNinga@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
Not universal, for example we use zebrafish for spine defect models since mouse spine has an odd curve/hunch that doesn’t line up as well. But for general metabolism/pathology/embryonic development they do a great job of mimicking human disease under the microscope. Its not always 1:1 but we learn a lot from these little guys.

Chinese drug loberamisal extends stroke treatment window from 6 hours to 2 days
“The large-scale multicentre phase 3 trial found that 70 per cent of patients who received loberamisal intravenously within two days of a stroke regained complete functional independence – an increase of 13 percentage points over standard care alone.”

- Crit@lemmy.wtfEnglish9 days
What part of this is “traditional”? You just read Chinese and assumed martial arts and alchemy or something?

wow. now imagine we made this discovery in 2006 and stemcell research wasn’t hindered by christofascists.

Nice, still waiting for teeth regrowth, colonoscopy not involving fingers up my ass or a diet drug available for me tho. Feels like this shit wont hit market until the planet has been literally cooked.

You can already poop in a box and mail it off instead of fingers up the ass. – https://www.cologuard.com/
GLP-1 is already a diet drug that’s available to most people.
2/3 of your hopes already exist. Maybe not for everyone, maybe it’s out of your price range, but they exist.

There is. Eat more fibers and veggies.

Teeth regrow trials are coming up. Probably gonna hit the market in the 2030s.
- SilverFlame@lemmy.worldEnglish9 days
GLPs are coming down in price, I’ve seen them as low as $130/mo. I lost 20 pounds in the first three weeks. Its slowed to about 1-2 per week now but it is steady.

If they can perfect the saftey switch they talk about in the article. Then maybe stem cells for the brain will be like vitamins. Cause damage to like the blood brain barrier is hard to detect, but seems to be present in a decent number of “syndromes”. Like autism for one. It would be nice if they understood the why and how’s, but that could be decades away.
