The funny thing I’ve found is that they don’t even realize they’re doing it. So I ask them how to say the name “Reese” and they’ll do it right. Then I’ll ask what the possessive form of the name is and they’ll say it correctly. The lightbulb moment is always really funny, but they still decide to be a fuckass and say it wrong anyway.
That’s the thing. When have you ever looked at the word “pieces” outside of candy and read it as “PEE-SEES”?
I could have sworn that they pronounced it “Reesees” in the commercials, so I went to double check and I was wrong. All official commercials that I’ve found they pronounce it “Reese’s”. This has me wondering where I heard the “Reesees” pronunciation. It must be some social thing, a dialect or accent around where I’ve grown up, or even just linguistic drift. Etymology is weird like that.
Maybe it’s from E.T.? Been years since I’ve seen it so I don’t remember how they say it, though Reese’s Pieces play a large role in the plot
