• Youtube red me a video recently, forget what it was about, but the guy mentioned ‘Rogue, one the first rogue-likes’ and that caught me off guard a bit.

    • That’s the price it pays for having a title that’s so clumsy to pronounce

    • Meanwhile nobody even talks about kings field, which is basically the same game but it predates thumb-sticks.

      • I’ve heard it described as being quite different. There’s no builds, and there’s more exploration than combat. It’s more a traditional RPG than a soulsbourne. If you’re going into looking for deep combat or learning enemy moves or behaviors you’ll be disappointed.

You whipper snappers don’t know or remember King’s Field.

      • If you’re a fan of early first-person dungeon crawler RPGs, very much in the vein of Ultima Underworld (or maybe a Morrowind demake, with extra jank) then it might be worth taking for a spin. It has a lot of the ‘early gaming’ foibles, like having puzzles that are unfair, and killing you on a whim. The controls, mmm, give you a lot of thinking time, let’s say. It’s also derivative, “follow the leader, but on the PSX” stuff. But you can see that some love went into it.

“From magic” starts with Demon’s Souls. Don’t be expecting a bold experiment that defines a new genre with the KF games.

        • It’s also derivative, “follow the leader, but on the PSX” stuff.

          What does this mean?

          • I mean that previous dungeon-crawling games in this style were mostly on the PC - that goes from your classic Dungeon Master to true 3D games like Ultima: Underworld. The King’s Field games are derivative, but are on the original Playstation, which didn’t have any other games like this.

I always thought old Ben was a little too dismissive here. “Well of course I know him–” Oh, well excuse me Mr. Jedi-pants!

My favorite Lovecraftian horror author is Lovecraft and my favorite death metal band is Death.

  • I mean, in logic any predicate A implies A. If we consider Souls Like to be some arbitrary subset of Dark Souls properties, then yes, Dark Souls contains them all.

But also, just because it’s a Souls game doesn’t mean it’s Souls Like, like DS3.
