I remember a couple years ago there was that rumor that skittles all tasted the same. I immediately called bullshit, because of course they fucking taste different, and went digging for the source, only to find it was a claim made in a scientific paper showing how the internet is quick to latch on to and spread false information. Somehow this made me even more upset.
- dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.caEnglish2 days
That’s actually the origin of the “average person eats 8 spiders per year” myth. Started for the reason of showing how fast false info spreads.
- SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.deEnglish2 days
Fun fact. It kind of was, and it kind of wasn’t. At least not in the sense that most people think.
The base claim is “people eat 8 spiders in their sleep”
Which was debunked by snopes in 2001, citing someone who make up that claim as an example, which then spread as misinformation
But that’s not the end of the story
spoiler
Snopes themselves fabricated that citation, making this whole story very meta
- Venator@lemmy.nzEnglish1 day
Well great, now I need to go get that book and check they weren’t lying about making up the citation…
- SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.deEnglish1 day
Lemmino did a video about it, before snopes admitted the trolling
Although, you never know if he lied as well

2 daysI don’t think they would so that. Kelog has calmed down a lot over the last few years.

froot loops all being the same was spread around the old fashioned way long before cell phones even existed.

Twitter was the best social media site on the Internet pretty until they changed the character limit.
It stayed pretty good until MAGA and MAGA bots flooded it, then it was shit if you didn’t have a tight list of follows.
It did not recover when they fled to Truth Social and was effectively unusable by the time of the takeover…which crushed any shred of hope of recovery.

I fled Twatter once it looked like Muskrat was going to have to buy it.
The bots were already way out of control then.
At this point, there’s nothing that would get back on that platform.

Same, I had been using it a lot less and less anyway but that was what made me click delete

Eh, it was always crap. The same way all social media are crap, that is.

That may be true for fruit loops, but the post is referencing froot loops. Totally different products

Why does the guy have an 800 number? I’m going to take a guess here and say that the middle picture is fake
- Tarquinn2049@lemmy.worldEnglish2 days
By “the guy”, do you mean Kellogg’s? We don’t know cletus’s number, but it must have been listed on either his twitter, or something he linked to from his twitter. While I don’t know if this is real, it is fully possible. And usually simple.
