• I fail to see why it should be asia centric.

Surely it makes more sense to call it Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe, Far Eastern Europe And A Bit North… :-)

  • The best European invention was the Suez canal, preventing people from realising that Africa is also the same landmass.

I propose we dig a similar canal from the north of Russia to the Black sea to unambiguously become a continent. Some would argue Caspian sea is more appropriate, but come on: Connecting the Black sea to the White sea? That’s poetic.

This plan would cost trillions, benefit no one and have devastating consequences for millions of people. I will not be answering questions.

Oh so another ai company then

Europe and Asia are the same continental mass but Africa is not. Africa is moving independent to the Eurasian continent and is even slowly producing a new continent at the horn of Africa. So yes, it’s true that Europe and Asia are the same continent but Africa is not. It is also slowly moving into Europe. That’s why the Alps exist.

      • Behold, the 16 continents:

        From Wikipedia.
You are of course free to define continent how you want, but I am free to prefer Afroeurasia over a North America that includes parts of Siberia and half of Japan.

        • I’m happy to include Japan in North America. Sad to lose parts of California, but it feels fair, especially since we get to keep cuba.

Also this is leaving me wondering about arctic earthquakes…

      • Actually, Europe is a large island group that just surfaced some 100 million years ago.

      • India then should also count as a separate continent since it’s on a separate plate. It’s not clear cut.

    • I support this plan because it would also separate russia from Europe and give us in Ukraine as well as Baltics a great defensible threshold.

  • Asia was named such by the Europeans, meaning something like ‘the land of the sunrise’ and thus referencing its Eastern position relative to Europe.

Etymonline cites a possible Akkadian origin for ‘europe’ meaning ‘to go down, set’, which would mirror the origin for the word ‘asia’.

In other words, Europe and Asia might literally mean ‘the western and eastern bit,’ making perfect sense.

    • Thus reaulting in Eurasia being the setting and rising land, which is fitting because the sun certainly does do both things there from what I hear (I’ve only been to North America according to the tectonicists in this thread)

      c. 1300, from Latin Asia, from Greek Asia, speculated to be from Akkadian asu “to go out, to rise,” in reference to the sun, thus “the land of the sunrise.” Used by the early Greeks of what later was known as Asia Minor; by Pliny of the whole continent.

  • Yeah its called Eurasia. Some Russians are quite fans of this kind of thinking.

  • Europe is actually more a collection of large islands that have temporarily decided to exist as a unified land mass because Africa and Asia are squeezing it from both sides (geologically speaking)

  • Europe is politically a continent bounded by Urals? What is southern boundary? Is a mountain range a legitimate geological continental boundary?

  • This is unironically true. You can call it Eurasia if you’re feeling charitable to the pale demons.

    • Not really, and even if it did it wouldn’t separate europe from asia, but it would put Japan and part of Siberia in North America, cut Africa in two, cut India and Arabia out of Asia, and trim off bits of both Americas in California, Central America, and Venezuela.

  • plus

    far west Asia: Africa

    south south east Asia: Austrailia

Iirc we have the ancient greeks to thank for the current distinction. They named Europe the region north of greece, and Asia the region east of Anatolia, and then eventually decided that their actual boundary should be the middle of the black sea

    • 14 hours

I thought the boundary was generally agreed upon as the Ural and Caucasus Mountains?

      • 12 hours

That would be eventually. Back then, Europe and Asia weren’t continents, they were names of undetermined regions that were north or east of them respectively.

I don’t know when or who decided “you know what? This whole region? It’s a continent, and let’s call it Europe” (maybe the Romans? Or even the Greeks?).

        • “That’s where the sun rises, that’s where it sets, and this sea is the middle of the earth”

  • s/

    Disgusting Kazhaqstan-centric world view. smh

How dare you?! Obviously [other point on sphere] is the superior point of reference.

    /s

    • And that point is obviously Mongolia

      *throat singing intensifies*

  • Eurasia, with the European, Indian, Arabian, and Scandinavian Great Peninsulas
