Sipping tea from beer mugs with his co-workers, Kyle Bos listed the ways his life is changing.
Bos has two daughters, with a third due in January. At the grocery store, five items cost as much as a full cart once did. And on Wednesday, Bos and nearly 1,400 other people were laid off from their jobs at what had been the Navistar truck factory in southwestern Ohio.
The layoffs — occurring just three days before President Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday at a nearby high school — were large enough to basically erase an entire year of job growth in the greater Dayton, Ohio, area. And they are one reason why Bos, 30, plans to spend the final weeks before the November election canvassing votes for Democrats.
Asked how many times he had voted for Trump, Bos held up three tattooed fingers. But he said he’s done with the president.
“Something has to change politically in this country,” said Bos, a member of the United Auto Workers who identifies as a centrist. “Seems like it just kept getting worse and worse and worse.”

If they vote Republican again they can make 5,000 dollars so i’ve been told by the orange paedophile.
Also they can sleep soundly knowing Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.

If only there were some kind of deal with iran that prevented them from getting nuclear weapons.
Also they can sleep soundly knowing Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
Frankly, I wouldn’t put it past him to fuck up that part too
But… at a certain point, lack of a decent education, critical thinking or intelligence becomes the driving cause. And that isn’t their fault. So it is hard to say someone like the guy in the story truely deserved this. He deserved better. He deserved to be protected by those who had the mental capacity and education to see the reality of trump. Those who saw it, and supported it anyway are the ones who deserve to pay the price.
- heavy@sh.itjust.worksEnglish2 days
I concede that there is a line where it’s not totally your fault, but I think there’s still some blame.
Overall, it’s expensive to be poor, not everyone has time to be educated, and sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know. Our systems are set up to fail you in a lot of ways, and education is another battleground.
I don’t think that absolves you when there are constant headlines talking about the blatant racism, homophobia, crass hatred, the last time they were in office, the economic plans. Hell the more I think about it, the more in your face it all is.
It’s not all the blame, it’s definitely more than none.
I think a fair number of people don’t watch or read the news. And I don’t really blame them. But when it co,es to the uneducated who do… the ones I know (very small data size) believed that the bad things about trump were fake news. And I get that. The news media is pretty blatant with all the clickbait and sensationalization of the news. They have plenty of reason to distrust it. It takes a lot of effort to keep up with which news sources are still mostly reliable. I don’t see a lot of uneducated people who are working manual labor jobs having the energy and motivation to put in that kind of effort. And the article makes a subtle point. The gov wasn’t improving his life, so he voted for someone different, hoping for change.
I will admit way back when trump ran in 2016, I thought maybe the fact that he was getting real attention might shake things up. I assumed he would lose like he always did over the years. Yet, he certainly has shaken things up. Maybe in the long run, we might see some real change. I kinda doubt it, but who knows. The rise of the social democrates or whatever we are calling them is at least a step forward.
And Trump will tell people at the rally to stop complaining because affordability is a hoax by the democrats and it would have been so much worse if Biden was president. And far too many people will leave the rally believing it.

Family member of mine said it’s because the the Democrats have the Senate and Representatives… He was/is brain washed and didn’t realize who is holding power right now
I have to make sure I heard that correctly. You’re saying you have a family member that believes the House and Senate are currently controlled by democrats?
- Jayhosh@futurology.todayEnglish2 days
That is correct. He didn’t believe it when I told him. I think when you hear fox news all day you’re left with that assumption

I’m straight up ready to abandon the American blue collared workers. They have been willingly duped for too long. Let them starve
- 2 days
And that’s the point!
Pretty much no viable Republican would say such a thing. They’ll do 10,000 things that make it clear they’ve abandoned blue-collar / working class people. They’ll support 1,000,000 more things that make it clear they’ve abandoned blue-collar / working class people. But they would never actually say they abandoned (or are ready to abandon) blue-collar / working class people.
So, Republican/MAGA managed to take near total control of the 3 branches of the USA’s federal government, a huge portion of state governments, and an enormous amount of local governments without even having to really try. Because “the other side” is more than happy to abandon the folks who voted for it.

Lying in parliament should be a crime. These things should matter when you are a decision maker for a country. Calling them out on it somehow makes the accuser seem petty?! We need to ditch 17th century sensibilities and take these tools to task for their malignant mismanagement.
“Why are the unions turning against the left? Must be AM radio.”
Not that neolinerals being “the left” didn’t cause this problem in the first place.
They knew he was a full of shitz, everyone has known trump is full of shit for many decades. They just thought he couldn’t fuck it up that badly and he’d be real mean to immigrants and queer folks. Yes, willingly duped.
- 2 days
I try to keep a pulse on this thing, i live in deep maga territory. I understand the instinct to believe everyone knows they are being duped, but after i spent time getting to know some Trump supporters i have become deeply infuriated at the education system: they are indeed that dense. For disadvantaged men, at least, the culture of being tough and masculine leads to a lot of unaddressed trauma that is then channeled by the media to reinforce conservative ideology.
It is not that complicated to see, for example: being gay is bad in the ideology, anything deemed as gay is ostracized; human sexuality is a spectrum and only a small minority are perfectly straight, so any given man probably has some subtle gay feelings they have to repress. These men are then fed the story that they are better than the gay men because they (the conservatives) have self restraint. This contempt that has been manufactured is then translated directly into votes, because why would one let “reckless unrestrained fools” (my paraphrasing of perspective) run the country?
This is why culture war nonsense is so damned important, if people knew they were being fooled the culture war wouldn’t work.
Idk man it’s still a choice, you’re not wrong in what you said but if people keep choosing hate because of human psychology in our DNA or something, then yeah we’re just doomed which is the way it looks like it’s going. An empathetic perspective like yours doesn’t offer any solution, neither does my cynical perspective other than just protect yourself and find an opportunity to leave.

I hear this all the time and it bears repeating that Independent doesn’t mean centrist, unless you lump anarchists in with the Dems.

2 daysthere was a sudden uptick in people claiming “I’m an independent”.
Most “Independents” are like Libertarians.
Republicans who want to do all the republican shit, and push all the republican hatred, but don’t want to carry the social burden of being associated with Republicanism.
- 3 days
There are several ways to get there. One is to draw tha scale so the Clintons are basically communists and the other end is a 1930s radical fascist. Another is to assume that you have the most reasonable, correct, and moderate political opinions. Like all the people who say they are Libertarian while voting straight Republican so they can support bad things without owning up to it.

The problem was that Trump sold himself as the change. He said he was the outsider who was going to clean up Washington. Heck I even voted for him the first time, because honestly, I never in a million years thought he was going to win. Irregardless, we are all in echo chambers: the left, the right, whatever you believe in. The little square of doom running on the algorithm that wants to keep everyones attention on the little square of doom has figured out how to give everyone the confirmation bias they crave and keeps everyone engaged with thinking that theyre the only ones who understand.

If people say it, it is a word. Irregarless grinds against my sensibilities like orientate does, but you can’t fight the tide (and shouldn’t because language changes).
adjectivenoun@lemmy.worldEnglish
1 dayNah. If people say it, and aren’t mocked or corrected, it’s a word. We’re keeping irregardless out of our lexicon by force, so help me flying spaghetti monster.
You’re literally a century too late for that. Irregardless is contained in Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com, and the American Heritage Dictionary.
The word is informal and nonstandard, so don’t use it in corporate settings. But it’s in daily use and gaining popularity. So it’s perfectly fine for forum use.
Also, Papyrus is and always has been the right choice of title font for Avatar. adjectivenoun@lemmy.worldEnglish
1 dayI respect your argument and acknowledge your conclusion. However, I choose to ignore it.

Irregardless is also a word. It is in dictionaries and was first documented to be used in the 1700s. You’re free to not like it, but people will continue to use languages in the way that’s useful to them regardless of your opinions. https://www.npr.org/2020/07/07/887649010/regardless-of-what-you-think-irregardless-is-a-word
Orientate comes from when maps used to point to sunrise, the Orient, in the east. Then North took over a little later.

My issue is that you can say orient as in “I use a map to orient myself in a new city.” Orientate is just a longer way to say the same thing. My point was I don’t like it, but I don’t pretend it should be policed either.
