Cake day: October 13th, 2025
  • x11.conf is one of my first memories about anything Linux.

I remember when I was just trying it (back when “edgy eft” was new) via live booting it, the very first customization I had to make was editing that for to allow my extra mouse buttons to work (the back/forward buttons that are common now were pretty new-ish back then, and by default it only worked with the 2 main buttons and the wheel (and the wheel button).

  • Was it only 15 minutes? High me remembers it as bring in one big dose, then just lil sporadic bursts the rest of the time.

I have a weekly “get high and watch a movie (a mix of “whatever strikes our fancy at the moment”, or “missed out on when it came out because we were raised super Christian”, with a healthy dose of “pride-related movies”) and then watch a few episodes of whatever tv show we’re working on” day, so I can confidently say that being stupid high is the best way to watch stuff. Even if we do miss a lot of context and plot from talking about tangentially-related stuff the whole time.

    Good times.

This coming month will probably be horror movies (obvz), and I’ve already picked a movie that actually did scare the absolute shit out of me as a kid, and the memory still has some trauma attached to it for me, but I’m hate-watching it to maybe help heal my poor childhood memory.

And what is it? It would be “Thief in the Night”, made in the 70s. Basically a Christian rapture themed movie. I have almost no specific memory of any of the scenes (I saw it when I was a single digit age), but I feel like there was someone who thought they were “saved” and didn’t make it or something. That idea and the song on the end credits I forget the exact title now but I assume it’s “I wish we’d all been ready” as that line is prominent in the chorus. The idea that someone could think they were saved but not really be (and the fact that all the adults around me didn’t seem to have any concern about it) made me feel very, VERY insecure about it, and was probably the first of many, many cracks that finally led to me figuring it out way later.

I spent the next 20ish years “praying the prayer” several times every time I thought about that song, just to make sure. It is definitely the source of a lot of anxiety for me, and probably the scariest scary movie I’ve ever seen.

Coming back to it now, over 3 decades later, taking a victory lap on it, while using extremely non Christian friendly language and being high af, will be a real healing moment for me I think.

But I’ll keep a spot open later this year to watch the whorehouse movie (😂).

  • I watched that for the first time earlier this month. I was NOT expecting what it actually was.

I thought it was just at most like a concept album film, but way more likely to just have her as the soundtrack to a bad movie with a silly and relatable “fuck up your boss” theme.

Now I know she was respected for her vocalized beliefs and inclusion, but I really didn’t think it would go that hard. I was blown away.

Plus I was pretty high when I watched it, and some of those scenes were trippy af. It was a good day.

  • I typically make smaller purchases more often.

Because of that, my protocol is to use self checkout until the amount/total size of items makes the tiny nooks too cramped for comfort.

I don’t typically loathe human interaction enough to take huge measures to avoid it, but I do prefer avoiding when possible.

I can also see it if I was buying a combination/type of items that I don’t wanna be judged for. I can’t think of a realistic version of that (other than the meme’d stories of a cucumber and pack of condoms or supplies you could bury a body with, etc), but just the thought that someone might judge it is enough for certain people to avoid it.

  • You wouldn’t have to calculate if you just start getting used to it. Just remember what it’s based on and stop clinging to the fahrenheit scale like it’s a lifesaver and you’re about to drown. Or keep a separate app running side by side set to C and get a feel for the translation if you want, but really you’d be better off switching to metric as your native scale entirely.

It may be mostly used in sciences, but given that weather is typically the only temperature based thing you probably need to look at regularly (outside of cooking/baking maybe- and you don’t really need a feel for how 375 is different than 400, just set the oven correctly), it’s not that difficult.

I did it just for kicks, and looked at both readings (F and C) for a while, and got the feel of it pretty quickly.

I want to do the same for length/distance next, which is more difficult.

But if you don’t just want to, it’s hard to find a good reason to, tbf.

  • Reading this thread, although I am kinda demirose I feel like the best reason to want a partner is to have someone do away with your “dirty” collection. Unless whoever would go through it (typically family) just happen to already know all your secret kinks and not be weirded out by them.

My parents will probably be dead by then, but I’m the oldest of a bunch of siblings. I don’t keep a huge collection or anything (almost everything I’ve ever bought is disposable), but I always cringe every time I buy any new supplies wondering “What if I die before this is used up? What are they gonna think?”.

I’m not particularly ashamed of my set of kinks, but one of them can read as questionable based on common conception, and while I assume most of them are at least a little kink aware, not one of them seems to be very freaky themselves (which, if they are, they don’t let on, and I haven’t figured it out (well played… 🥷)), so I worry some about what they’ll think when they find it, or what the niblings would think if they ever heard about it.

But even in the worse case scenario I’ll be too dead to care.

  • I can’t stand vtubers. The entire concept is super cringe.

I get why people might not wanna show their faces, or have to hassle with making wardrobe and/or makeup choices for every video. So just do a voiceover, or at the very most have a cartoon version of the character you’re playing your channel as.

But this micro industry of making motion tracked 3d models (complete with (sigh…) “jiggly bits” is just so over the top, beyond the pale levels of cringe imo.

Even worse than “I’m so random/penguin of d000m” type cringe. I’m sure some can make good content, but I simply cannot stand looking at it.

It could work as a one off bit or something I guess, but when someone is known by an animated model I immediately look elsewhere.

Most are either very autistic, or trans. Usually those are some of my favorite types of content. I assume the trans ones are just insecure about their passability, or maybe just insecure about their looks in general for to whatever circumstances, which I can understand. I wish they weren’t made to feel that way, but I definitely get it.

But just knowing they had to get a model made for them (unless they’re generic on top of the other cringe), and they’re sitting right there with motion tracking cameras while still hiding just drives part of me insane.

It bothers me in the same way that I first noticed during the original run of “Muppet Babies” (in the 80s- yeah I’m old) and the nanny was on screen, but you never saw more than the bottom of her dress(/skirt?) down. Or on Peanuts and the adults just talk as “wah wah wahhhh” even though the kids understood them just fine. Or any hidden character in anything really (Cobra Commander, Dr Claw, etc).

One part of me gets it, but the much bigger part just cannot stand it.
