They played on the first big festival I ever visited. Heavy rain, just before they entered the stage but they managed to keep us warm and moving :D

Do Violent Femmes count as folk punk? Or even punk?
I mean I guess so sound wise. But they aren’t even like post punk. They’re altrock. Would be like Sublime folk punk because they use an acoustic guitar (and are far more punk than Violent Femmes).
I would argue folk punk didn’t slget going till we were fully in the post punk era (2001 and on). Mid 90s and punk was in full swing.

At first it wasn’t immediate that they’d be any sort of folk or punk because of of those 2 songs that got rotation on commercial alternative stations. But I’d argue they are after listening to that Country Death Song, and at least a banjo is featured in a number of their b sides. In the end we are all arguing semantics I suppose.
I mean I wouldn’t say it’s semenatics. Folk punk is a distinct musical tradition that came out of post punk and has its roots in mainstream punk rock. Its like trying to call or The Eels Everclear an emo band. Like it’s not wrong perse but it’s definitely not right. Whereas built to spill, it would be correct to call them emo, or at least pre emo, and they were making music in that period.
Like, it’s important to understand and respect that not all things are the same thing just because to our modern ear they sound similar, and now we would likely classify a group like Violent Femmes as folk punk. But folk punk didn’t extend from violent femmes. It has different historical roots.

Hats off to the Dreadnoughts for blowing the entire shanty band genre out of the water with one album.
That’s good one.
My favorite part of it: comment section Roll Northumbria on YouTube had a guy who actually sailed on the ship as a mechanic for a few years. And now our of blue YouTube brings him an authentic shanty, as if from another universe.
